Regime change queen Victoria Nuland leaving post while Ukraine on the ropes, US policy in shambles

vicoria nuland
Ukraine forces are in retreat and the war is going badly from NATO's perspective, Biden's $60+ billion for Kiev is halted in the House, and the Democratic incumbent's reelection chances are looking grim in November. And as if confirming there's no light at the end of the tunnel, Victoria Nuland is stepping down as Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs of the United States.

The State Department announced Tuesday morning she is retiring. The Associated Press announcement interestingly enough underscores her hawkish legacy on Russia and Ukraine. "Victoria Nuland, the third-highest ranking U.S. diplomat and frequent target of criticism for her hawkish views on Russia and its actions in Ukraine, will leave her post this month, the State Department said Tuesday," it wrote.

Her boss Antony Blinken said something a bit ironic on the occasion of unveiling her departure: "But it's Toria's leadership on Ukraine that diplomats and students of foreign policy will study for years to come."

Comment: Yes, for the utter criminality of her actions.

Comment: We can think of few in contemporary Western politics who has done as much to destabilize the world and help create the conditions for mass suffering and death as Victoria Nuland. You can be sure that despite her stepping down from her current position she will continue to work behind the scenes fomenting global chaos and making a boatload of money from the military industrial complex while doing so.

A racket! Pentagon claims economic bonanza from arming Ukraine

War is a racket
Workers from Texas to Ohio benefit from Washington's campaign to procure arms for Kiev, Lloyd Austin has claimed

The Ukraine conflict is a boon for the US economy as it has allowed more jobs to be created in the American military-industrial sector, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has said.

Speaking at a meeting of the White House Competition Council on Tuesday, the Pentagon chief promised that Washington would continue to push for a stronger defense industry, particularly in light of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

Austin claimed that American military assistance to Kiev has not only "saved lives" and kept Ukraine in the fight, but has also strengthened the US economy.

"These investments have expanded facilities and created jobs for American workers. And the weapons that we've sent to Ukraine to help defend itself are made in America by American workers nationwide — from Texas, to Ohio, to Arizona," he added.

Comment: It is a certain type of evil, which profits from and glorifies the death of hundred of thousands of people. These kinds of people are not looking for a way to peace but only how to make sure that the war profiteering continues.

Comment: Zakharova is right. The American taxpayers can stop this conflict as they are the ones who pay for it. As it is, it is a huge transfer of money from the taxpayers to the 1% at the top. The conflict in Israel is also paid for by the taxpayers and the only ones profiting is the Military industrial complex and their political lackeys.

Ukraine using 'chemical warfare agents' - Moscow

Kirill Lysogosky

Russia's security service claims to have arrested a man who was planning an attack in Zaporozhye Region.

Ukraine has used chemical warfare agents secretly supplied to it by the West to attack Russian troops, Moscow's Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Kirill Lysogosky has claimed.

Last week, the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) claimed to have thwarted an "attempt by the Ukrainian special services to commit a terrorist act in Zaporozhye Region using an analog of the BZ chemical warfare agent, according to the NATO classification" in which one man was arrested.

George Galloway is not a threat to democracy - only to the elite hypocrites running the UK

The returning politician's recent electoral win on the back of the Gaza-Israel debate is rightfully alarming for both Labour and Tories

Last week's exchange of insults between newly elected MP George Galloway and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak highlighted the festering political divisions that have recently emerged in Western democracies over the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

Their vituperative exchange also made clear that rational debate over Gaza is virtually impossible in those Western nations in which both major political parties uncritically support America's pro-Israel foreign policy in Gaza.

Debates over domestic culture war issues in the West have for decades been characterized by irrationality, demonization of opponents, the abolition of history, and the refusal to acknowledge the right to express a view contrary to dominant woke ideologies.

Within such a neo-totalitarian intellectual culture, it would be foolish to expect that a debate over a historically contentious issue like Gaza could be conducted rationally.

Nevertheless, last week, Galloway won a by-election in Rochdale, a poor Midlands electorate in the UK formerly held by the Labour Party.

Comment:
1) Searching for the name Galloway on SOTT.net Supersearch in the title gave 80 articles so far. While it is too early to know what exactly will come out of his election to the British Parliament, as a minimum it should be interesting. Going through the first three of eight pages in the search results, there was: 2) Galloway may take his name from an area of southwestern Scotland:
Galloway (Scottish Gaelic: Gall-Ghàidhealaibh [ˈkal̪ˠaɣəl̪ˠu]; Scots: Gallowa; Latin: Gallovidia)[1] is a region in southwestern Scotland comprising the historic counties of Wigtownshire and Kirkcudbrightshire. It is administered as part of the council area of Dumfries and Galloway.

A native or inhabitant of Galloway is called a Gallovidian.[2][3] The region takes its name from the Gall-Gàidheil, or "stranger Gaels", a people of mixed Gaelic and Norse descent who seem to have settled here in the 10th century.[4]

Galloway is bounded by sea to the west and south, the Galloway Hills to the north, and the River Nith to the east; the border between Kirkcudbrightshire and Wigtownshire is marked by the River Cree. The definition has, however, fluctuated greatly in size over history.

A hardy breed of black, hornless cattle named Galloway cattle is native to the region, in addition to the more distinctive Belted Galloway or "Beltie".
In English gallows is:
a wooden structure used, especially in the past, to hang criminals from as a form of execution (= killing as a punishment):
There is also the expression gallows humour is:
jokes or humorous remarks that are made about unpleasant or worrying subjects such as death and illness
In a time when the UK is facing major changes the above meanings may carry meaning even if only by coincidence.

3) From the article:
Galloway won a by-election in Rochdale, a poor Midlands electorate in the UK formerly held by the Labour Party.
Some of George Galloway's opponents can be looking forward to more of his sharp comments and scathing wit. In fact a few, if they are not devoid of humour, which many undoubtedly are, may even need to suppress their amusement when their party boss comes under fire. As for the "poor Midlands electorate", they will probably consider their vote well worth the effort, while others might envy them that they had the opportunity.

Kiev mayor blasts Zelensky for firing top general

Kiev Mayor Vitaly Klitschko, January 2, 2024.
© Genya Savilov / AFPKiev Mayor Vitaly Klitschko, January 2, 2024.
Replacing Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Valery Zaluzhny was a mistake, Vitaly Klitschko has said.

President Vladimir Zelensky was wrong to fire the top general of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Valery Zaluzhny, Kiev Mayor Vitaly Klitschko has said.

Zelensky dismissed Zaluzhny last month, citing the need for "a change in strategy." General Aleksandr Syrsky was named Zaluzhny's successor.

"Removing him was a big mistake. We need to unite around people who have the highest support - like Zaluzhny who has the highest rating in the polls," Klitschko told the Italian daily La Repubblica in an interview published on Monday.

Comment: Against many odds, the mayor of Kiev, Vitaly Klitschko, has held his post since June 2014.

1) Following the appearances of Klitschko in the accumulation of daily news items, published and achieved, can serve as a lens through which to review history. Below are some headlines with excerpts:

Zelensky jeopardizing Ukraine's interests - Kiev mayor (February 2024)
The mayor of Kiev, heavyweight boxing star-turned-politician Vitaly Klitschko, has argued against Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky's plan to fire military commander General Valery Zaluzhny, warning the move might have heavy implications for the whole country.

Klitschko shared his opinion on the matter in a Telegram post on Monday, stating that Ukrainian society has been "discussing and anxiously waiting for the outcome of the situation" regarding Zaluzhny.

"In many ways, it was thanks to Zaluzhny that Ukrainians truly believed in our Armed Forces, which enjoy the greatest trust today," Klitschko asserted, warning about the potential consequences of Zaluzhny's dismissal.
Unfortunately, today is the moment when politics can prevail over common sense and the interests of the state. And this moment does not depend on Zaluzhny.
Klitschko expressed hope that Ukraine's leadership actually "understands the seriousness of the steps it is taking now and the full extent of its responsibility." Kiev must maintain "combat readiness and coherence of the army" as well as the "unity of society," the mayor argued, expressing doubts that the potential move would actually contribute to these goals.
Kiev mayor orders closure of Ukrainian Orthodox Churches citing 'ties to enemy nations' (September 2023)
Kiev Mayor Vitaly Klitschko on Friday ordered the closure of 74 churches belonging to the canonical (UOC), citing its alleged "direct ties" to the Moscow Patriarchate of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Klitschko's decree is similar to that used to seize the Kiev Pechersk Lavra, or Monastery of the Caves, which Ukrainian police stormed last month. The world-famous holy site, which is nearly 1,000 years old, was handed over to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, a rival organization set up by the government in 2018.
Germany has 'betrayed' Ukraine - Kiev mayor (January 2022)
Berlin has repeatedly sold out Ukraine by refusing to lay on deliveries of guns, ammunition, and military equipment in the face of purported aggression from neighboring Russia, Kiev's mayor Vitali Klitschko has claimed, as tensions flare in Eastern Europe.

Writing for German tabloid Bild on Sunday, the former heavyweight boxing champion said, "There is great frustration in Ukraine over the fact that the federal government continues to stick" to its support of Russia's underwater gas pipeline.

Klitschko added that Germany's refusal to supply defensive weapons to Kiev, and its blocking of other states from handing over arms, had also caused significant disappointment. A recent report in the Wall Street Journal alleged that Berlin was preventing Estonian officials from providing German-origin military hardware to Ukraine.
Kiev mayor, ex-heavyweight champ Vitali Klitschko investigated over treason & embezzlement in Ukraine (November 2019)
The National Anti-Corruption Bureau went after Klitschko and two of his deputies following complaints by the Ukrainian MPs who suspected the trio of abuse of power during the reconstruction of a bridge in the capital. They claimed that the city officials deliberately overstated the amount of funds used in the project.

The three-time world boxing champion was also accused of treason, using Kiev's budget to illegally enrich private individuals, unauthorized land grab and other wrongdoings.

The case against the mayor was launched amid months of fruitless attempts by the administration of Ukraine's new president, Volodymyr Zelensky, to remove him from office.

Klitschko has staunchly denied all the accusations. Commenting on the report, the politician dismissed allegations of treason as "laughable."
Oops: Mayor of Kiev failed to declare property in Hamburg and Los Angeles (June 2017)
Detectives of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine have started criminal proceedings against the mayor of Kiev Vitali Klichko, under Article 366-1 of the Criminal Code (declaration of false information).

Criminal proceedings involve undeclared estates in Hamburg and Los Angeles, which the Klitschko family uses.

The court case came out of a TV program called "Scheme", which aired in December 2016. Reporters found that Vitaliy Klichko did not declare information about the property he allegedly owns in Hamburg and Los Angeles, where his family resides. Politicians are required by law to declare their property and investments in the public's interest.
Klitschko repaints famous Kiev Soviet-era monument in propaganda move (May 2017)
A Soviet-era friendship monument in central Kiev has been repainted as a rainbow amid preparations for the Eurovision Song Contest.

The Ukrainian capital city of Kiev is preparing to host the Eurovision Song Contest, whose main theme this year is 'Celebrating Diversity'. The event will be held next week.

Kyiv's mayor Vitali Klitschko ordered the Friendship of Nations Arch, famous monument, originally dedicated to the unification of Ukraine and Russia within the Soviet Union and which is located in the heart of Kiev, to be repainted in the colours of rainbow.

The monument also serves as a symbol of the city's LGBT community and will be used as such during the forthcoming Kiev Pride event, scheduled to take place in June.
Lavrov's on a roll: Tells Daily Telegraph Russia ready to protect its legitimate interests (August 2014)
S.L.: Our stand is crystal-clear - we want peace in Ukraine, which can only be attained through broad national dialogue in which all regions and all political forces of the country must participate. This is what Russia, the US, the EU and Ukraine agreed in Geneva on April 17. At the recent meeting in Berlin of the foreign ministers of Russia, Germany, France and Ukraine, no one objected to confirming the Geneva Statement. The point is for Kiev to stop war games and to abandon the illusion that the deep crisis in Ukraine can be resolved by winning the war against your own people. It is deeply saddening that the US and the EU continue blindly to support anything Kiev does.

Let's recall another document that Kiev and the West try to forget. On February 21, an agreement on settling the crisis was signed by Viktor Yanukovych, Arseni Yatsenyuk, Vitali Klitschko and Oleg Tyagnibok and witnessed by the foreign ministers of France, Germany and Poland. They now say the agreement "has been superseded by events" because [former Ukraine president] Mr. Yanukovych left the country. But let me remind my colleagues that the February 21 agreement listed as the number-one priority the commitment to a government of national unity. Does this goal depend on the personality of Mr. Yanukovych? Isn't national unity a universal principle for any country that wants to stay whole? Instead of honouring this commitment, the opposition leaders staged an armed coup and publicly declared they had created a "government of the winners". Unfortunately, the logic of "winner takes all" remains the thrust of Kiev's actions, resulting in thousands of victims among civilians, hundreds of thousands of refugees and displaced persons, as well as an almost totally destroyed social infrastructure in many cities and towns in eastern Ukraine.
Ukraine and the grand chessboard (April 2014)
Ukraine is for all practical purposes broke. The Kremlin's consistent position for the past three months has been to encourage the European Union to find a solution to Ukraine's dire economic mess. Brussels did nothing. It was betting on regime change to the benefit of Germany's heavyweight puppet Vladimir Klitschko, aka Klitsch The Boxer.

Regime change did happen, but orchestrated by the Khaganate of Nulands - a neo-con cell of the State Department and its assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nulands. And now the presidential option is between - what else - two US puppets, choco-billionaire Petro Poroshenko and "Saint Yulia" Timoshenko, Ukraine's former prime minister, ex-convict and prospective president. The EU is left to pick up the (unpayable) bill. Enter the International Monetary Fund - via a nasty, upcoming "structural adjustment" that will send Ukrainians to a hellhole even grimmer than the one they are already familiar with.

Once again, for all the hysteria propagated by the US Ministry of Truth and its franchises across the Western corporate media, the Kremlin does not need to "invade" anything. If Gazprom does not get paid all it needs to do is to shut down the Ukrainian stretch of Pipelineistan. Kiev will then have no option but to use part of the gas supply destined for some EU countries so Ukrainians won't run out of fuel to keep themselves and the country's industries alive. And the EU - whose "energy policy" overall is already a joke - will find itself with yet another self-inflicted problem.

The EU will be mired in a perennial lose-lose situation if Brussels does not talk seriously with Moscow. There's only one explanation for the refusal: hardcore Washington pressure, mounted via the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
Kiev snipers were shooting from building controlled by Maidan forces - Ukraine's ex-security chief (March 2014)
Furthermore the former security chief believes that Parubiy has been in contact with US Special Forces that could have coordinated the assault.

"Shots came from the Philharmonic Hall. Maidan Commandant Parubiy was responsible for this building. Snipers and people with automatic weapons were 'working' from this building on February 20. They supported the assault on the Interior Ministry forces on the ground who were already demoralized and have, in fact, fled," Yakimenko said in an interview with Russian television.

The police officers were chased by a group of rioters armed with various weapons and at that point, Yakimenko says snipers fired at pursuers themselves.

"When the first wave of shootings ended, many have witnessed 20 people leaving the building," former chief says, noting that they were well-equipped and were carrying military style bag for carrying sniper and assault rifles with optical sights. Not only the law enforcers, but people from the opposition's Freedom, Right Sector, Fatherland, and Klitschko's UDAR party have also seen this, Yakimenko claims.
An important second listen to the "F--k the EU" Ukraine recording (March 2014)
The recording reveals Nuland and Pyatt discussing whether Vitali Klitschko, sometimes referred to as "Klitsch" in the recording, should be named the deputy prime minister and seems to assume that Arseniy Yatseniuk, sometimes referred to in the recording as "Yats," will become prime minister. Since that conversation, Yatseniuk has, indeed, become prime minister. Anybody that tells you that the US is not running the "revolution" from behind the scenes is blowing smoke.
Anonymous Ukraine battling illegal coup govt in Ukraine - funded and directed from the West: Releases Klitschko e-mails showing treason (23 February 2014)
Anonymous Ukraine is operating in what can only now be described as a war zone and the security measures they are forced to take are extreme. A member of Anonymous Ukraine who wishes to remain anonymous spoke to the Voice of Russia about the operations and the recent release of e-mails between Vitaly Klischko and the Lithuanian Presidential advisor. The e-mails show that Klitschko was intentionally planning to destabilize the country, is being instructed and funded from abroad and has his accounts in Germany.
Greetings citizens of the world. We are Anonymous Ukraine.

The Anonymous Hacktivist Collective worldwide is partially divided on the issue of Ukraine. This has to do with the western mass media propaganda and the conflicting reports that are coming out of the country. This is sad as some Anons are unknowingly supporting the dark forces at work in Ukraine. Members of Anonymous Ukraine are aware of the internal meddling by the United States, NATO and the European Union into the internal sovereign affairs of Ukraine. Anonymous Ukraine supports peace and the right of the people to self determination. The Bandera Nazis and fascist thugs that are beating and killing police and members of the security services of Ukraine do not represent the will or the wishes of the people of Ukraine. The people of Ukraine do not want European Union integration. The people of Ukraine do not want NATO on their territory. The people of Ukraine voted for President Yanukovich to lead them in fair and just democratic elections. The people of Ukraine plea to the President and to Russia for help in stopping the siege of Ukraine by Nazi thugs and murderous gangs. The people of Ukraine do not want to see their beloved capital Kiev occupied by Nazi killers and burned to the ground. The people of Ukraine want their independence to be recognized and be allowed to determine their own fate without pressure from US, NATO, European Union. The people of Ukraine want peace and want the Bandera Nazis to be stopped once and for all. Anonymous Ukraine does not like nor support what is happening in Ukraine now. The so-called opposition is trying to tear Ukraine apart. Anonymous Ukraine has released the e-mails of one of the leaders of the so called opposition and will continue to expose the moves by the west to subvert the sovereign country of Ukraine. The e mails released by Anonymous prove that Vitaly Klichko is a puppet of the West and is being financed through intermediaries in Lithuania. The e mails also prove that Klitchko has bank accounts in Germany and is receiving funding for his coup d'état from the West. We will continue fighting these puppets. The western puppet opposition leaders will hurl Ukraine into chaos. We appeal to the president of our country. The people of Ukraine urge you. President Yanukovich, to restore order and bring calm and stability and disperse the gangs of robbers and Nazis. Anonymous Ukraine will strike at all of the web resources of western hirelings and fascists. Anonymous Ukraine calls for Ukraine to be unified and independent. The government of Ukraine promoted the country's integration into Euro-Atlantic institutions despite the reluctance of Ukrainian people. Ukrainian citizens realize that signing of the Association Agreement with the European Union will lead to the collapse of Ukrainian economy in the near future. We express our support to the people of our country. We want Ukrainian government and EU leadership to understand that people of Ukraine do not want their country to become a raw material donor to Europe. Ukraine must be free. We do not want to be dependent on other countries or organizations. Ukrainian people do not need a speculative Association Agreement with the European Union. Ukraine does not need to be a part of Russia-led Eurasian customs union. We do not need to be servants of NATO. Ukraine does not need European Union. Ukraine does not need NATO. Ukraine should not be anybody's servant. We stand for independent Ukraine. We declare the continuation of Operation Independence. We will strike at the web resources of countries and organizations that pose a threat to freedom and independence of Ukraine!
In the same article there are screenshots of a few Klitschko emails and this SOTT comment at the end:
What a grovelling, sycophantic, bootlicking excuse for a human! This man deserves to be in prison, along with everyone else who conspired to sell their country down the tubes.
That was in 2014, we sure have come a long way since then!

Ukraine president's signs EU-brokered agreement with anti-semitic, anti-gay, far-right opposition to end crisis - But can such characters be trusted? (21 February 2014)
The Ukrainian opposition representatives included the leader of the UDAR political party, Vitaly Klitschko, the head of the Batkivshchyna opposition party, Arseniy Yatsenyuk, and the leader of the nationalist Svoboda opposition party, Oleg Tyagnibok.

The breakthrough agreement was witnessed by EU foreign ministers who brokered the deal, including Poland's Radoslaw Sikorski and Germany's Frank-Walter Steinmeier, as well as Director at the Continental Europe Department of the French Foreign Ministry, Eric Fournier.

Russia's Human Rights Commissioner Vladimir Lukin, who was present at the negotiations, noted the positive dynamic of the talks.

"We got acquainted with our partners' position, and now we understand it," he said. However, he added that "the biggest difficulty is that the situation is constantly changing" and there is no clarity as to who will fulfill the agreements and how.
What about apologizing to Ukraine, Mrs. Nuland? (7 February 2014)
Yesterday's leak of the flagrant telephone talk between the US Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland and the US Ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey R. Pyatt has already hit the international media headlines. In short, it turned out that the US officials were coordinating their actions on how to install a puppet government in Ukraine.

In this flagrant telephone talk between the US Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland and the US Ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey R. Pyatt agreed to nominate Bat'kyvshchina Party leader Arseniy Yatseniuk as Deputy Prime Minister, to bench Udar Party leader Vitaly Klitschko off the game for a while and to discredit neo-Nazi Svoboda party chief Oleh Tiahnybok as "Yanukovych's project". Then Mrs. Nuland informed the US Ambassador that the Washington's hand by the UN Secretary General, Under-Secretary for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman had already instructed Ban Ki-moon to send his special envoy to Kyiv this week "to glue the things". Touching the European role in managing Ukraine's political crisis, she was matchlessly elegant: "Fuck the EU".
Above it was said: "to bench Udar Party leader Vitaly Klitschko off the game for a while". Well, he then became the mayor of Kiev, but recently there was Victoria Nuland quits Whether her departure, at least for now, will also signify changes later in Kiev is to be seen.

2) As a note to the departure of Nuland, she offered observers of what is happening in Ukraine 10 years of bumbling US adventures with a few glaring revelations. We will not know if is became too much even for Washington, but here we go:

Judges improperly enhanced sentences of more than 100 Jan 6 rioters, appeals court rules

Judges may have improperly applied federal sentencing guidelines to more than 100 people convicted of participating in the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the US Capitol, a federal court ruled Friday.

A three-judge panel of the DC Circuit Court of Appeals rejected the Justice Department's argument that convicted rioters merited lengthier prison sentences for interfering in the "administration of justice" when they stormed the Capitol to disrupt the certification of Joe Biden's 2020 election win.

"[T]he phrase 'administration of justice' does not encompass Congress's role in the electoral certification process," Judge Patricia Millett wrote in the court's unanimous ruling.

Zelensky and the West have found a new scam - and taxpayers will foot the bill

Ukrainian soldiers unload ammunition from a military truck.

Ukraine now self-identifies as a weapons maker and wants help transitioning.

What do you do to boost GDP when your country is neck-deep in military conflict and your allies' main interest is using you to wash taxpayer cash into their own military industrial complexes? Make that your whole national identity! And demand that the West help you transition.

"Our country will become one of the world's key producers of weapons and defense systems. And this is no longer just an ambition or a prospect, it is a potential that is already being realized," Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said in September 2023. That plea has echoed all over the Western press. You'd think that it may have thought to "realize" that "potential" before it went live with the big "Ukrainian counteroffensive" show. But hey, making lemonade from lemons, there's definitely a business opportunity in losing on the battlefield that wouldn't exist if Ukraine had proven to be adequately stocked up and victorious. Any ambulance-chasing weapons salesman would be attracted by that. And on top of that, Russia's whole stated objective from the very outset has been "de-militarization." Right now, Ukraine is to Western weapons producers what the Cheesecake Factory is to a fat kid.

Germans plotting attack on Russian infrastructure: A bridge too far

scholz
© newsrnd.comGerman Chancellor Olaf Scholz
Three things hit you about the reported phone tap of German officials discussing destroying the Crimean Bridge. 1. How stupid the Germans are, to think that their pitiful of not plain childish attempts to distance themselves from the war itself is fooling Russia. 2. That Germany believes that isolated but significant attacks on Russian military infrastructure would be a decisive turning point in the war which not even NATO bosses can deny Ukraine is losing. 3. How western media has more or less left the whole subject alone, fearing that it doesn't help the West's cause which they (media) are aligned to.

But without doubt, the fact that we are now entering a new phase in the war where the West feels it has to resort to more and more desperate tactics, rather than stick to the conventions, we can see from the transcripts that a certain panic is taking hold within the German government and its military. Berlin is certainly thinking big. But it is also thinking maximum plausible deniability. It is thinking Battle of the Bulge.

The comical aspect of the entire leak though is how poor the German intelligence services are in general. It was always a joke, going back to WWII where German spooks could be spotted a mile off in London or indeed the fact that during the same period its own agencies were fooled by a handful of British double agents over the location of the landings, that Germany doesn't really do spying very well. Like media, these are two areas which we can say are not in decline as they never advanced in the first place. The leaking, or the lack of security, over the discussions are an intelligence failure which makes the Germans look like amateurs at best and deluded half wits at worse over how they see themselves, given these past two years where they have rapidly developed their military capabilities.

In peacetime, when Russian experts regularly took part in pan-European events, this author's favorite place was the Vienna Military Academy. Discussions there were a real pleasure.

Most of the audience were officers of the Austrian army, heirs to an impressive imperial school, capable of discussing with skill and intelligence subjects ranging from the intricacies of geopolitics and military strategy to the epistemological aspects of ideological confrontation. Adding to the charm of the conversation was the fact that for its participants, adorned with medals, axelbands, impressive chevrons and beautiful buttonholes, all this was akin to pure art. This kind of knowledge had no practical application in prosperous and neutral Austria, where the relevant department is called the Ministry of Defense and Sport.

The nostalgic memories were awakened in yours truly amid the excitement caused by an audio recording of a conversation between German officers about the prospects of using Taurus missiles to destroy the Crimean Bridge. Germany, the economic and political pillar of the European Union, is certainly not Austria, and the Bundeswehr, the modern incarnation of a long and rich military tradition, is not the Bundesheer. Nevertheless, the published transcript of the military dialogue makes one think about the correlation between military capabilities, the skill of their application, and the adequacy of political perception in contemporary Europe.

Comment: As author illuminates: Sensibility is crucial as tensions rise, reason evaporates and war becomes the new pandemic.
