The deepening mystery of the March fireballs

If you love a good mystery, look no further than the night sky in March 2026. There were no major meteor showers scheduled for March, yet suddenly fireballs started appearing everywhere. "During the month of March, reports of very bright fireballs to the American Meteor Society (AMS) suddenly doubled," says Mike Hankey, who manages the AMS's fireball reporting system. "Many of them were visible in broad daylight and created loud sonic booms." A daytime fireball over Western Europe on March 8th drew more than 3,200 witness reports. Nine days later, a 7-ton asteroid exploded over Ohio with the force of 250 tons of TNT. On March 21st, a fireball broke apart above Houston, sending a fragment through the roof of a house. And those were just the headliners. Hankey has been running the fireball reporting system for nearly 15 years (indeed, he wrote much of the software himself), so he knew something unusual was happening. When the reports kept piling up, he dove into the data -- and what...

Rubin observatory announces 11,000 new asteroids

The Vera C. Rubin Observatory will discover up to half a million solar system objects every year. It's already starting to deliver on that promise. The Vera C. Rubin Observatory promised to discover up to half a million new solar system objects each year of operation. It isn't fully operational yet, and it's already delivering on that promise. Last week, the International Astronomical Union's Minor Planet Center confirmed the discovery of more than 11,000 new asteroids captured by Rubin during a 1½-month observation period. That period wasn't even part of its planned Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), just a test run to check systems and optimize observations. Still, it was enough for Rubin's powerful 8.4-meter Simonyi Survey Telescope to make thousands of discoveries. While most of them are in the main asteroid belt, the list includes 380 trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) that orbit beyond Neptune, and 33 previously unknown near-Earth objects. This latest submission to the Minor...

A space rock entered Earth's atmosphere last night, creating a dramatic fireball over the North Sea. "We all screamed when it happened, I was so excited!" reports Ian Sproat who photographed the object from the Northumberland coastline of England: "I was out taking pictures of the Milky Way rising over Lindisfarne (also known as 'Holy Island') when this huge fire ball passed through the frame creating an insane contrast of stars, landscape, and drama," he says.

Rare 'sungrazer' comet MAPS will shine superbright on Saturday ‪—‬ if it survives a dangerous encounter with our star

Comet C/2026 A1 (MAPS) could shine brightly in the evenings after April 4, but only if it survives a very close encounter with the sun. A rare "sungrazer" comet is about to pass very close to our star and could become visible in daylight — or it could completely disintegrate before our eyes. Either way, there could be something special to see in the night sky, with a large tail potentially visible late this week. Comet C/2026 A1 (MAPS) was discovered Jan. 13 by French astronomers at the AMACS1 Observatory in Chile. Although the comet was initially thought to have a nucleus measuring around 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometers) wide, astronomers later reduced the estimate to under 0.25 miles (0.4 km) based on James Webb Space Telescope observations taken in February. C/2026 A1 (MAPS) belongs to a special family of comets called Kreutz "sungrazers," so called because they get very close to the sun, lighting up brightly but often breaking into smaller pieces. There are around 3,500 members of...

Earth is facing an unexplained surge of massive, booming daytime fireballs in early 2026

On a Saturday afternoon this past March, a piece of the solar system plummeted toward a home in north Houston. The one-ton space rock broke apart nearly 30 miles above the city, unleashing a violent sonic boom equivalent to 26 tons of TNT. A dark, jagged fragment smashed through a residential roof and even ricocheted around a bedroom like a cosmic pinball. This would have been stunning in itself, except there were more such meteor strikes. During the first three months of 2026, our planet waded through an unusually dense shooting gallery. The American Meteor Society (AMS) has tracked a staggering wave of large, bright meteors — known as fireballs — lighting up skies from California to Germany. Earth sweeps up tons of space dust every day. Usually, this material is the size of a grain of sand and burns up harmlessly in the upper atmosphere. But right now, we are colliding with much bigger rocks. And scientists are scrambling to figure out why. Mike Hankey, a researcher who manages...

Large new crater discovered on the moon - Impact likely occurred in last 2 years

A once-in-a-century crater formed on the moon right under our noses. A routine search of images from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter camera found a fresh crater as wide as two American football fields, planetary scientist Mark Robinson reported March 17 at the Lunar and Planetary Sciences Meeting in The Woodlands, Texas. The crater is 225 meters wide and formed in April or May 2024, Robinson said. According to predictions based on other lunar landmarks, a crater that big should form only once in 139 years. The discovery can help highlight the risks impacts pose to future astronauts.

The mystery of the Ohio and Texas fireballs

Is Earth under siege? If you've been reading headlines about space rocks falling over Ohio and Texas, you might be wondering what's going on. According to NASA, it's nothing unusual, yet still a little mysterious. "Spring is fireball season," says Bill Cooke of the NASA Meteoroid Environment Office. "For reasons we don't fully understand, the rate of very bright meteors climbs 10% to 30% during weeks around the vernal equinox." The Ohio and Texas meteors landed squarely in the middle of the season. Onlookers saw the Ohio fireball on March 17th only 3 days before the equinox. The Texas fireball appeared one day after the equinox on March 21st. Both were visible in broad daylight, with sonic booms and meteorites. One fragment reportedly punched through the roof of a home in suburban Houston. "Meteorite falls--fragments that actually hit the ground--are more common in spring as well," says Cooke.

Comment: They're coming down thick and fast now, especially over the US, it seems... A meteorite crashed straight through the roof of a home near Houston, Texas, on Saturday, sending shockwaves through the local neighborhood. Local officials say the incident happened at around 4:45 p.m. in northwest Harris County. The space rock punched a hole through the roof of a two-story house, slammed into a bedroom floor, then ricocheted and struck the ceiling again. Miraculously, no one was injured. Fire Chief Fred Windisch of the Ponderosa Fire Department said he had never seen anything like it in decades of service. The homeowner, Sherrie James, described hearing a loud explosion from inside the house. Her grandson went to investigate and found a hole in the ceiling and the rock sitting on the floor below.

Nebraska battling its largest wildfires in history - 800,000 acres burned and at least one person killed

Swaths of Nebraska are engulfed in fire, with some 800,000 acres burned and at least one person killed. The wildfires, which are the "largest wildfires in our history," according to a post on X by state's governor Jim Pillen, are being driven by a powerful heat wave across the western U.S. Temperatures in the 80s Fahrenheit have combined with low humidity, high winds and extreme drought to increase the risk of fire in the state for at least the coming week. Already, the fires have been burning for days. The largest of the fires, called the Morrill Fire, is less than 20 percent contained at the time of writing, according to a federal wildfire monitor. The blaze, which began on March 12, rapidly grew because of high winds. It is between about 550,000 and 643,000 acres in size. The Morrill Fire's cause remains unclear.

This video shows a bright bolide recorded on March 17, at 23:30 local time (equivalent to 22:30 universal time). At the start of the video, the fireball has been sonified by for outreach purposes (its light was converted into sound). The bolide was observed by a wide number of casual eyewitnesses, who reported it on social networks. The event was generated by a rock (a meteoroid) from an asteroid that hit the atmosphere at about 108,000 km/h. The fireball overflew the provinces of Murcia and Albacete (Spain). It began at an altitude of about 95 km over the locality of Jumilla (province of Murcia), moved northwest, and ended at a height of around 42 km over the locality of Cañada del Salobral (province of Albacete). This bright meteor was recorded in the framework of the SMART project, operated by the Southwestern Europe Meteor Network (SWEMN) from the meteor-observing stations located at La Hita (Toledo), Calar Alto (Almería), Sierra Nevada, La Sagra (Granada), Sevilla, and Otura...

Residents across Northeast Ohio woke up to something far louder than a St. Patrick's Day celebration this morning. Just before 9 a.m., tens of thousands of people across Northeast Ohio, as well as parts of Pennsylvania and New York, heard and felt what many described as a massive explosion. No one knew immediately what had caused it. Within hours, the National Weather Service office in Cleveland provided an answer. What the National Weather Service confirmed The NWS Cleveland posted on social media that the latest Geostationary Lightning Mapper imagery pointed to a meteor as the source of the boom. The agency shared the imagery alongside its assessment, making clear that the event was natural in origin rather than the result of any industrial or structural incident.

A bright fireball was observed over western Turkey on the evening of March 15, with residents across Uşak Province reporting a slow-moving luminous object crossing the night sky for more than 20 seconds. Videos recorded by witnesses show a bright white to bluish-green object with a compact head and a narrow glowing tail moving across the sky at a shallow angle before fading from view. The long visible duration and smooth motion distinguish the event from typical meteors, which usually last only a few seconds. Preliminary analysis suggests the object may have been an Earth-grazing meteor, a rare type of fireball that skims the upper atmosphere at very shallow angles. Earth-grazing meteors enter the atmosphere at a shallow trajectory and travel hundreds of kilometers through the upper atmosphere before exiting again into space or continuing along a long atmospheric path. Because they remain at high altitude, they can remain visible for 10 to 40 seconds, significantly longer than most...

The meteorite observed at night flew in the Black Sea about 100 km south of the Crimean Bridge. Preliminary calculated information has been released on the trajectory and nature of the bright bolide observed last night near the Black Sea coast. Based on the current data, the object's movement was completely above water. The object (meteorite) entered the Earth's atmosphere at approximately 22:35 Moscow time (to be further clarified) in the area of the central water area of the Black Sea, approximately 100-150 km south of the Crimean Bridge. The cameras located on the transport hub, if they have the appropriate spatial orientation, should have recorded the moment of the body's appearance and the entire trajectory of its flight.
