The backward tail of interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS

Last month, when astronomers used the Hubble Space Telescope to photograph 3I/ATLAS, they had a "Eureka!" moment. The mysterious interstellar visitor had a fuzzy atmosphere and a growing tail. Clearly, it was a comet. However, something was not quite right. Take a look, and see if you can spot the problem: The tail of 3I/ATLAS points almost straight toward the sun. Normally, comet dust tails are pushed away from the sun by radiation pressure. 3I/ATLAS is doing the opposite — it's backwards. Why? Researchers led by David Jewitt of UCLA believe they have an explanation: "It is due to the preferential sublimation of ice on the hot day side of the nucleus and the near absence of sublimation on the night side," they wrote in a paper reporting the observations.

Canada is breaking apart: Geologists reveal hidden fault line that could unleash devastating quakes

A hidden seismic threat is awakening beneath Canada's Yukon Territory. The Tintina fault, long thought to be inactive, now shows signs of significant movement, suggesting it could unleash massive earthquakes. What Is the Tintina Fault, and Why Does It Matter? Stretching over 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) from the Yukon into Alaska, the Tintina fault is one of the major geological features in western North America. It runs parallel to the Yukon River, marking a significant divide in the Earth's crust where two tectonic plates meet. Over its history, the fault has shifted laterally by a remarkable 450 kilometers (280 miles), making it an essential player in understanding the region's seismic landscape. For a long time, scientists believed the fault had been inactive for at least 40 million years, largely because there had been no significant seismic events associated with it during recorded history. This view began to shift when recent research uncovered new evidence that the fault...

India is breaking apart — Geologists detect deep continental fracture

A massive tear deep beneath the Himalayas could mean India is literally splitting in two, scientists warn. A groundbreaking geological study, unveiled during the latest American Geophysical Union (AGU) conference, is stirring up the scientific community with a bold proposition: India may be splitting into two. The research, backed by seismic data and isotope analysis, offers compelling evidence that a segment of the Indian Plate is undergoing delamination — a process in which the lower part of a tectonic plate peels away and sinks into the mantle. This tectonic development could dramatically reshape our understanding of how the Himalayas formed and may have deep implications for earthquake risk in the region.

Earth's first crust composition discovery rewrites geological timeline

Researchers have made a breakthrough discovery that changes our understanding of Earth's early geological history, challenging beliefs about how our continents formed and when plate tectonics began. A study published today in Nature reveals that Earth's first crust, formed about 4.5 billion years ago, probably had chemical features remarkably like today's continental crust. This suggests the distinctive chemical signature of our continents was established at the very beginning of Earth's history. Professor Emeritus Simon Turner from the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Macquarie University led the study, which included researchers from around Australia and the UK and France. "This discovery has major implications for how we think about Earth's earliest history," says Professor Turner. "Scientists have long thought that tectonic plates needed to dive beneath each other to create the chemical fingerprint we see in continents. "Our research shows this fingerprint existed in...

Oceanic plate between Arabian and Eurasian continental plates is breaking away

An international research team led by the University of Göttingen has investigated the influence of the forces exerted by the Zagros Mountains in the Kurdistan region of Iraq on how much the surface of the Earth has bent over the last 20 million years. Their research revealed that in the present day, deep below the Earth's surface, the Neotethys oceanic plate - the ocean floor that used to be between the Arabian and Eurasian continents - is breaking off horizontally, with a tear progressively lengthening from southeast Turkey to northwest Iran. Their findings show how the evolution of the Earth's surface is controlled by processes deep within the planet's interior. The research was published in the journal Solid Earth. When two continents converge over millions of years, the oceanic floor between them slides to great depths beneath the continents. Eventually, the continents collide, and masses of rock from their edges are lifted up into towering mountain ranges. Over millions of...

New research by Dr. Bellut-Staeck in the journal Medical Research and Its Applications suggests chronic infrasound exposure can lead to serious blood vessel problems. This underpins earlier literature that have reached the similar conclusions. But the government refuses to accept the results. Wind turbines are known to disrupt wildlife and severely damage the surrounding biotope, And, despite being inaudible, it is known that low-frequency vibrations from wind turbines can be harmful to human health. Hat-tip: Tichy's Einblick here. Humans can only perceive sound waves over a range of approximately between 20 and 20,000 Hertz. Sound waves below 20 Hz cannot be heard by humans and are called infrasound. Natural infrasound emitted by nature is harmless but it is increasingly being understood that infra-sound generated by wind turbines pulsates and make people who are subjected to them over extended time periods sick.

Gargantuan waves in Earth's mantle may make continents rise, new study finds

Dramatic cliffs and high plateaus are caused by the same wave triggered in Earth's middle layer when continents pull apart, a new study finds. High plateaus rise in the interior of continents thanks to churning deep inside Earth hundreds of miles from where they eventually spring up, new research suggests. As continents break up, massive cliff walls may rise near the boundaries where the crust is pulling apart. That breakup sets off a wave in Earth's middle layer, the mantle, that slowly rolls inward over tens of millions of years, fueling the rise of plateaus, the new study found. Scientists have long known that continental rifts triggered the rise of massive escarpments, like the cliff walls that separate the East African Rift Valley from the Ethiopian plateau, said lead author Thomas Gernon, a geoscientist at the University of Southampton in the U.K. And these steep cliffs sometimes fringe inland plateaus that rise from the strong, stable cores of continents, known as cratons....

Airbursts: An underappreciated hazard

A paper published in March of 2021 in the journal Science Advances reports on the discovery of evidence for a large airburst type impact within the SØr Rondane Mountains, Queen Maud Land, East Antarctica. The report bears the names of a 15-member international team that did the research. The lead author was M. Van Ginneken with the Belgian Geological Survey. In the first sentence of the abstract to the article the authors support something I have been saying for literally decades: "Large airbursts, the most frequent hazardous impact events, are estimated to occur orders of magnitude more frequently than crater-forming impacts." This fact is confirmed simply because airbursts don't leave impact craters. In this case the fingerprints of the event took the form of condensation spherules resulting from "a touchdown event, in which a projectile vapor jet interacts with the Antarctic ice sheet." The authors go on to explain that "Finding evidence of these low-altitude meteoritic events...

Last month, in the February 2024 issue of the Kosmographia Newsletter I reported on new research correlating a series of large-scale igneous events which produced the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province (CAMP) and the Siberian Traps with mass extinction episodes. On February 8 another paper was published in the journal Global and Planetary Change which further supports correlations between mass extinction episodes with gigantic volcanic eruptions and catastrophic cosmic impacts. The lead author of the paper is Michael Rampino, who has for decades been in the forefront of researching catastrophic events in Earth history. I have been following his work since the early 1980s and hold him in high regard as a scientist who is willing to think outside established paradigms of Earth history. The abstract to the paper begins: "We find that Large Igneous Province (LIP) volcanism, mostly continental flood basalts (CFBs), along with the largest extraterrestrial impacts show significant...

Geologists unravel plate tectonic chain reaction

Geologists at Utrecht University are working hard to unravel the secrets of plate tectonics, the mechanism that continuously shapes Earth's crust and is causing earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. This time, another mystery has been dissected. In the Earth's geological past, there were 'short' periods of a few million years during which many tectonic plates around the world suddenly changed their speed and direction. What caused these abrupt changes in plate movements? Earlier research showed that changes in movement between two plates can result from continental collisions or rising mantle plumes. But could such collisions or mantle plumes set off a global chain reaction? Now geologists have succeeded in finding evidence that supports this. "With this discovery, we are able to better understand the driving forces behind plate movements, and thus processes such as mountain formation or volcanism." This paper, published in Nature Geoscience, was a collaboration between geoscientists...

FLASHBACK: Geomythology looks to ancient stories for hints of scientific truth

Everyone loves a good story, especially if it's based on something true. Consider the Greek legend of the Titanomachy, in which the Olympian gods, led by Zeus, vanquish the previous generation of immortals, the Titans. As recounted by the Greek poet Hesiod, this conflict makes for a thrilling tale - and it may preserve kernels of truth. The eruption around 1650 B.C. of the Thera volcano could have inspired Hesiod's narrative. More powerful than Krakatoa, this ancient cataclysm in the southern Aegean Sea would have been witnessed by anyone living within hundreds of miles of the blast. Historian of science Mott Greene argues that key moments from the Titanomachy map on to the eruption's "signature." For example, Hesiod notes that loud rumbles emanated from the ground as the armies clashed; seismologists now know that harmonic tremors - small earthquakes that sometimes precede eruptions - often produce similar sounds. And the impression of the sky - "wide Heaven" - shaking during the...

Twelfth century literature and space-age data help map 3,000 years of auroras

Researchers from National Institute of Polar Research and the Institute of Statistical Mathematics published maps indicating how the auroral zone has moved over the last three millennia. "The Poetic Edda", an Old Norse collection of poems believed to have been most likely drawn up between 1000 and 1100 AD, contains the gods and giants of ancient Scandinavian lore but lacks perhaps the most magical of real phenomena — auroras. A century later, another Old Norse text, called "The King's Mirror", describes auroras over modern-day Greenland. Around the same time, auroras were witnessed across Japan, including written records of red and white curtain-like lights just north of Kyoto. Why the discrepancy? Researchers set out to better understand the auroral zone and its movement over the last 3,000 years in an effort to predict how it might change in the future. The team published maps indicating how the auroral zone has moved over the last three millennia on Aug. 20 in the Journal of...

Sun halos and sun pillars are created from ice crystals in the sky refracting sun light, but the both look different and can form at different times of the day. Sun halos are created when sunlight or moonlight is reflecting off ice crystals in the sky. These crystals will then form a halo around the sun. Most of the ice crystals are found in cirrus clouds or cirrostratus clouds. It usually forms a white circle or even sometimes you will see rainbow colors in the halo.

How old-fashioned is your taste in music? Researchers have recreated notes from a 17,000-year-old conch shell, found in a cave in southern France. Discovered in the Marsoulas Cave, just north of the Pyrenees mountains, in 1931, the shell was initially thought to be a drinking cup. But a more detailed analysis, published today in the journal Science Advances, showed that the shell had been subtly modified by humans to attach a mouthpiece and use as a musical instrument. The researchers enlisted the help of a musicologist specialising in wind instruments, who played the instrument in a recording studio. With the mouthpiece of the shell protected to avoid damage to the artefact, the musicologist blew air through the shell in a similar manner to playing trumpet or trombone, which allowed the shell to vibrate at its natural resonance and produce notes. Three distinct tones were recorded, which were similar to the modern notes C, D and C sharp.

A global network of scientists has completed the first major analysis of gravitational wave data, providing exciting insights into some of the most exotic objects in the Universe. "We are announcing the discovery of 44 confirmed black hole mergers, which is a more than a four-fold increase in the number of previously known gravitational-wave signals," says Shanika Galaudage from Australia's Monash University, who was part of the research team. "With so many black holes to study, we can start to answer deep questions about how these systems came to merge." It's been just five years since physicists shook the scientific world with the long-sought-after detection of gravitational waves. This Nobel Prize-winning feat recorded the ripples in spacetime created by a colossal crash between two orbiting black holes - a phenomenon first predicted by Einstein's theory of general relativity. Since then, detections have generally been announced one by one. But now, as detectors such as the LIGO...

Geophysicists have been puzzling over a gradual weakening of the Earth's magnetic field in an area stretching from Africa to South America, which has resulted in technical disturbances in satellites orbiting Earth. Scientists have resorted to data from the European Space Agency's (ESA) Swarm constellation to probe the disturbing weakening of Earth's magnetic field in the area known as the "South Atlantic Anomaly". Jurgen Matzka, from the German Research Centre for Geosciences, and a team of experts from the Swarm Data, Innovation and Science Cluster (DISC) have been using data from ESA's Swarm satellite constellation to identify and measure the different magnetic signals that comprise Earth's magnetic field.
On April 22, 2020, YouTuber 'Noel James Riggs' awoke to hear a strange "metallic sounding noise" outside his home in Albacete, Spain. He thought the sounds might have come from construction nearby, but realized it was early Saturday morning and decided to investigate: Strange "metallic" sounding noise recorded between 6:30 - 7:00 AM on a Saturday morning in Albacete, Spain. The noise was very loud and there was no construction or large machines in the area at the time and this area is not near a factory or train station. These strange sounds can be heard in places all over the world. Sometimes they are called "Sky trumpets" etc. Nobody knows the source of this sound and as far as I know there is no scientific research going on to try and find the source. I had recorded a much longer audio recording with a HQ digital recorder when I decided to go back inside to record a video. This video recording is at the tail end of the phenomenon.

Finally unable to sleep, I grabbed my phone and began recording them. Interesting! The only place I've ever heard these sounds are here on YouTube from various videos people uploaded.

Strange sounds were recorded by a resident of Domodedovo, Russia. The noise resembled a siren or the voice of a horror movie. Someone heard the wind in the strange sound... a warning about impending cataclysms. . According to the author of the video, the strange noise started around 03:00 a.m. and lasted until approximately 03.40 a.m. The author of the video told MK reporters: The window was ajar. I already went to bed and heard these sounds. At first it seemed to me that this was howling dogs or something. I opened the window to the fullest, and the sound became clearer and very strange in nature. I have never heard anything like it before. All this lasted about 15 minutes. According to users of social networks, a similar anomalous noise has already been recorded in different corners of the planet, and it itself may be a harbinger of cataclysms or even an apocalypse.
Strange 'trumpet' sounds disturb the night in Buenos Aires, Argentina

Last night, social networks exploded after hundreds of residents claimed to have heard strange sounds "like sirens" or "trumpets" in the sky of cities in the western suburbs. What does buzz have to do with coronavirus quarantine? For several nights now, citizens have been claiming to hear different quasi-apocalyptic sounds from the skies of different cities around the world. Argentina is no stranger to this phenomenon that occurs mainly in countries that go through quarantines in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic. The explanations are not very reliable. From supposed "sky-bikes", a kind of collision of hot and cold air masses to radio frequencies that propagate in the ether.

A frost explosion. A meteor sonic boom. Blown transformer. Trains. Tannerite. Fireworks. Build ups in the sewer line. Aliens. Yes. Aliens. All these have been offered up as possible culprits for a semi-regular, unexplained "boom" that's been heard by residents of Mason City for the past few years. Map shows the most recent locations of booms heard and reported on local social media platforms. Some insist they only hear it in the southeast part of town, while others insist it's farther north. Even the intensity of the boom isn't wholly agreed upon. Some of that could be explained by location. The farther away you are from something, the less intense it's going to sound, after all.

On November 25, 2019, YouTuber 'Shannon Maybe' shared footage of strange trumpet sounds she heard in the skies of Anchorage, Alaska around 1:00 a.m. A commenter on the video attributed the sound to road graters which she dismissed: ... it's not tho.. I looked up other videos on here and the sounds are the same in other states, some during the days and with no snow out... Another commenter said the noise was from the HAARP project, to which she replied: I've lived here my whole life, I've never heard that here before ever! HAARP is here in Alaska.

People all over Sonoma County looked up at about 7:40 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 21, when a brief series of "booms" rolled across the valleys. But there was no glow in the sky, the stars were visible in the cloudless sky. Was it thunder? Or was it a meteor? It may be no coincidence that the sound corresponded to a large but infrequent meteor shower, known as the Unicorn (or Monocerotids, from the constellation of its visible origin), seen only every 25 years or so - and last reported in 1995. But meteors are usually silent apparitions, fleeting and ghostly. In social media groups, many people dialoged about the Thursday night noises. Descriptions of the noises ranged from "rumbles like thunder" to "like a limb fell on the house." And it didn't seem to be particularly localized, but strong throughout the Sonoma Valley, in Nextdoor neighborhoods from Temelec to Denmark Street. Similar social media networks reported the noises at about the same time in Healdsburg, 25 miles away. Others on...

A series of strange and mysterious howls were recently caught on tape by a Canadian hunter, and netizens could not help but speculate about the nature of the sounds - with the craziest theories coming up, including those pointing to such legendary creatures as Sasquatch or Wendigo. Gino Meekis was hunting grouse several kilometres from Sioux Lookout, Ontario on 3 October alongside his wife and grandson when the family heard the strangest and eeriest sounds, faintly resembling screams. The video, later posted on YouTube, has collected almost a million views, with people left guessing about who or what could have made these sounds. Meekis, who was later approached for comment by Vice, is an experienced hunter accustomed to different sounds in the Canadian wilderness but even he was confused by the howls. "When it let out the first scream, I thought it was a moose, but my mind changed when it screamed again and again", the hunter said. He began recording the shrieks almost straight...

YouTube user 'Shandleyman' heard strange trumpeting sounds outside his home on the evening of October 14, 2019. He reports that 'trumpet/flutes-like' noise lasted 6-7 minutes: I was in my washroom drying off after a shower and I heard something funny outside. It was a chilly night so I didn't open the window to investigate further. About 5 minutes later, I noticed the funny noise was changing pitch as if through a chorus effect. I pulled out my phone and started recording. I only caught the tail end of it but the noise lasted a good 6 or 7 minutes. The chorus effect is barely noticeable in this video but what you can hear is individual trumpets/flutes coming in and going out. If this was a prank, someone had quite the amplifier because this surrounded my city of Port Coquitlam.

I got into work at 3:30am ... no construction, no loud vehicles, nothing on the two major highways. It is quiet when I come into work. I've never heard the sound before or since I've been coming into this building for 11 years (more less.) In my 28 years of living, I've never heard a sound like this at all. It sounds like mating calls for whales or a really good trumpet player that can throw sound from hell-a-far. It was so loud when I walked into the building, I could hear it before I could even open the warehouse doors and for those of you have not seen videos of my warehouse, you can tell what doors I'm talking about. I could hear that clearly so when I stepped outside this is what I heard:

A mystery over a loud noise which woke people up across North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area remains unsolved - although an earthquake has been ruled out. The noise was heard around 10.30pm on Thursday last week in places including Epworth, Crowle and Gainsborough. Some people who heard the noise initially wondered if it had been an explosion or an earthquake. Some attributed it to a sonic boom - the noise an aircraft makes when it breaks the sound barrier - but the RAF confirmed none of its aircraft would have made the sound in the area at the time it was heard. It happened on the same day that southern California was hit by a 6.4 magnitude earthquake, the biggest in 20 years, leading some people to believe there could be a connection.

Some of the light flashes and explosions have been recorded by home outdoor security cameras and are being posted on YouTube. Some are posting comments on Facebook. In recent weeks, the phenomenon has left residents guessing and speculating. Community activist Edward McDonald said the sonic booms are shaking both homes and the nerves of homeowners in the area of Fleet Avenue. "What I've heard is like a loud bang, like a boom," McDonald said. "It shakes houses, it rattles windows. It hasn't caused any destruction yet, or it hasn't caused any property damage, but it's definitely noticeable."

She comments that the nearest airport was 16 km from her city and hadn't been operating since 2014. Nobody heard anything from the area of the city's stone quarry either. The sound was bizarre enough that she notes the effects she saw and felt then: The strange thing about the noise is that he [it] was going straight ahead and coming back but not rise up... and more than that, the sound was so powerful like you could feel the vibration of it, like when you are staying next to a speaker.

Repetitive trumpet/metal grinding sound that was at times very loud. Woke up my children, and later me. Very strange. We live in Shirehampton, near Bristol Port so this could conceivably be big ships moored in the harbour making groaning noises, but otherwise I am not sure what to think! Was genuinely spooked by it. Sounds a lot like the 2018 Gothenburg video. The roaring background noise is the M5 motorway which is somewhat dampening the strange sound. It was much clearer/louder in real life.

At first I thought it must be the snowplows or some machinery scraping the asphalt but when I opened the window to hear it better, it struck me as being extremely similar to the weird sounds heard worldwide since the last few years, including several instances in Quebec. It went intensely for about 20 minutes (that I could hear) and then could still be heard sometimes through the afternoon although with a dimmer sound. The sounds were way louder and more frequent before I pulled my phone out and started recording! It lasted for about 45 minutes to an hour!

'Terrifying loud noise' heard at 2am in Austin, Texas

On February 5, 2019, YouTube user 'Jared McClain' published footage of weird noises he heard in Austin, Texas around 2:00 am: Hello all. I was up late at night and this sound began out of nowhere. It reminded me of the soundtrack of a scary movie. It freaked me out so much I grabbed my phone to record the noise. I begin my video in my room, then go out front to hear the noise better. It seemed to be coming from a few blocks away, so I went back upstairs to put on my shoes and get my keys to drive to see what was making the sound. As soon as I put on my hoodie to leave, the noise stopped. It freaks me out to listen back to the noise. I'm not sure if it's a natural phenomenon or something out of the ordinary (aliens?).
