Stunning meteor fireball over Mediterranean Sea (11 Sep)

This video shows a stunning bolide recorded on September 11, at 3:46 local time (equivalent to 1:46 universal time). It was so bright, that night turned into day during a short instant. The fireball was observed by several casual eyewitnesses, who reported it on social networks. The event was generated by a rock (a meteoroid) from a comet that hit the atmosphere at about 238,000 km/h. The fireball overflew the Mediterranean Sea, between the coasts of Catalonia and Mallorca. It began at an altitude of about 165 km over the sea, moved southwest, and ended at a height of around 74 km over the sea. This bright meteor was recorded in the framework of the SMART project, operated by the Southwestern Europe Meteor Network (SWEMN) from the meteor-observing stations located at Huelva, La Hita (Toledo), Calar Alto (Almería), Sierra Nevada, La Sagra (Granada), Sevilla, Sant Celoni, and Mazagón (Huelva). The event has been analyzed by the principal investigator of the SMART project: Dr. Jose M....

Meteor fireball over Virginia and other states on September 9

Check out this video. A large fireball was seen streaking over our sky early Wednesday morning. The time captured is at 2:38 a.m. Many of you have sent in your video and reports. The color was reportedly more green and very bright. There was no boom or sound with this fireball. Many of you were up before 3 a.m. and physically saw the bright streaking meteor across the sky. According to NASA JPL Ambassador Tony Rice, the trajectory was likely from Pennsylvania into Central Maryland. This would have been moving from the north, to the east. We are awaiting more information from NASA.

A bright green fireball lit up the night sky across the North Island last night. Video of the meteor was captured and shared online by the Tauranga Astronomical Society just before 7.45pm. "We captured this on one of our meteor cameras at the observatory (Fergusson Park, Matua, Tauranga) and TAS member David Greig captured it on one of his home meteor cameras," it said online. The Society said the fireball was travelling from west to east over the upper North Island and would have ended up in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of New Zealand. Tauranga Astronomical Society president and Fireballs Aotearoa member David Greig told 1News this meteor originated from the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter and was a remnant from the formation of the solar system about 4.6 billion years ago. Regarding the vivid green colour of the meteor, he said "the colour of a meteor comes down to the composition of the meteor, the metals in it.

A spectacular fireball streaked across the Hungarian sky early on Saturday, briefly turning night into day in parts of the country with an intense blue-green flash. The exceptionally bright meteor appeared at around 1.24 AM, shortly after thunderstorms had moved away and skies began to clear. Webcams across Hungary captured the rare celestial event, showing a bright object travelling across the sky before disappearing from view, Időkép reported. The meteor's brightness is estimated to have reached around -10 magnitude, making it an exceptionally powerful fireball and potentially comparable in apparent brightness to the full Moon. Meteors brighter than around -4 magnitude are generally classified as fireballs, according to Szeretlek Magyarország.

A bright fireball lit up the night sky across the Pacific Northwest early Friday morning. The meteor was observed between 12:45 a.m. and 12:50 a.m., with reports spanning across Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and British Columbia. The American Meteor Society defines a fireball as an exceptionally bright meteor. The event occurred during the annual Perseid meteor shower, one of the most active meteor showers of the year. Witnesses across the region described seeing a bright orange or green streak followed by a flash that briefly illuminated the night sky. There is no indication that the object reached the ground. What many witnesses described as an explosion was likely the meteor breaking apart as it burned up high in the atmosphere. And if you happened to be awake around 12:50 this morning—you got one heck of a show! Source: KIRO 7 News

The Perseid meteor shower, among the most striking celestial events of the year, peaked on the night of August 12, running into the early hours of August 13, 2026 — and this year's viewing conditions were unusually good, with the peak falling on a new moon. A meteor over Istanbul, caught on camera Two nights before the peak, cameras across Istanbul recorded a bright meteor lighting up the sky. According to local media reports, the object entered the atmosphere at around 1 am on August 10 over the Hürriyet neighbourhood of Büyükçekmece, and its descent was captured second by second. The flash was clearly visible to the naked eye and was filmed on a car dashcam, with security cameras in Arnavutköy and Küçükçekmece and several mobile phones also catching it. The report describes it as a meteor entering the atmosphere. It does not identify it as a Perseid — though the shower has been active since mid-July.

Residents across the North Island have reported seeing a fireball flash through the sky and hearing thunderous booms late last night. Footage provided to the Herald showed several large flashes of light before a bright ball of light fell and disappeared into the night sky. The bright light explosions illuminated almost the entire sky in a video taken around 10.30pm in Wellington. Meteor monitoring organisation Fireballs Aotearoa said it received multiple reports of a bright fireball meteor over the lower North Island. Social media users in Wellington, Kāpiti, Manawatū and Palmerston North reported hearing and seeing the "orange flash". The astronomical event stretched across the North Island, with people seeing it in Auckland and Bay of Plenty.

A fireball that streaked across the skies of the South Island just before sunset on Sunday likely plunged into the sea, experts say. The meteor was seen across the Mainland at 5.51pm on Sunday and appeared to crash beneath the waves of Canterbury's East Coast, Steve Wyn-Harris from Fireballs Aotearoa said. Jas Mina was driving her Tesla along Old West Coast Rd, heading into Christchurch, when her cameras captured the object.

A celestial object, strongly suspected to be a meteor, streaked rapidly across the skies of Java, triggering a loud boom on Saturday (July 11, 2026) at approximately 21:30 WIB. This astronomical phenomenon caused a stir among residents across multiple provinces, spanning West Java, Central Java, and Yogyakarta. A brilliant blue-green flash of light was observed cutting across the night sky, stretching from the Bogor and Ciamis areas to the western horizon of Yogyakarta. Meanwhile, residents in the Cirebon area reportedly heard a thunderous explosion loud enough to rattle the windowpanes of their homes. The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), together with relevant astronomical monitoring stations, is still gathering data to determine the size and impact point of the space rock. The public is advised to remain calm, as such giant fireball phenomena typically burn up completely in the atmosphere before reaching the ground. Daryono, the former Director of the BMKG's...

Photographer Chris Ratzlaff was looking up at the sky that night for the aurora borealis, or northern lights, which were so bright they were visible even at his home in Calgary. "I was recording it with my phone, just panning around the horizon... (and) I noticed this fireball streaking into my view of my camera," he recalled in an interview on Monday. "I just redirected from the aurora and started following the fireball as it went down." He called it a lucky break, albeit one that happens more frequently with the growing prevalence of modern cameras that can shoot video in low light. "A real-time live video of a fireball coming down? That's a unique experience. That's a unique capture, and it does get a lot of traction in the social media space," he said. By Monday at noon, his video had been viewed more than half a million times where he posted it to the Alberta Aurora Chasers Facebook page.
