2 feet of snow falls on Mt. Bachelor, Oregon in 48 hours

As of Thursday morning, Mt. Bachelor ski area had received 17 inches of snow in 24 hours and a total of 48 inches over a two-day period. This mid-April storm brought 11 inches of snow overnight causing snow immersion suffocation and tree well risk at the ski area for what seems like the first time this season. It must've been quite the powder day, hopefully all who partook stayed safe. The ski area announced last week that this would be its final weekend, culminating on its end of season celebration, RendezVan. As for this weekend, the weather looks like it will clear up on the mountain. The mid-mountain forecast on Snow-forecast.com predicts that to be the last of the snow this season. Temperatures could reach into the mid-40s Saturday and Sunday. Winds are expected to die down and the sun could break through the clouds. The ski area has seen a total of 206 inches of snow this season, according to its mountain report. Its snow base was up to 43 inches Thursday.

Hail covers parts of Tunisia and Algeria like snow

Severe thunderstorms have affected the Mediterranean this week. On Monday, a surface low-pressure system in the Mediterranean in conjunction with an upper air cut-off low, led to thunderstorms over north Africa. Their intensity was aided by the hot precursor conditions. Algeria and Tunisia were notably affected by the thunderstorms, with some hail accumulation layers as a result. When so much hail forms, it starts to lay down sheets of hail, covering the ground like snow. Hail accumulations of up to 3cm were reported in Oum Ladjoul and Hammam Sokhna in Algeria, and there were hailstones of up to 3cm in diameter in Makthar, Tunisia. Thunderstorms continued in the region through the following day, with further hail accumulations, notably in Ouled Bousmir, Tunisia, where there was a layer about 2cm deep. Later in the week, another surface low developed, this time over Sicily. Thunderstorms broke out across parts of central Italy on Wednesday morning. These led to some severe...

Heavy spring snowstorm blankets Calgary and southern Alberta

Snowfall warnings in effect for much of southern Alberta Calgarians were in for another slippery commute Thursday after a spring snowstorm plunged the city back into winter driving conditions. Heavy snow is expected to continue to fall throughout the day, with total accumulations of 15 to 30 centimetres, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada. "Poor visibility due to blowing snow is occurring in some areas and will continue until mid-morning," the agency said in its yellow-level snowfall warning for the city. Yellow-level snowfall warnings are also in effect for much of southwestern Alberta. Calgary Transit has put all of its snow detour routes into effect and is asking riders to check if their route is affected while planning their trips. "We are working hard to get you to your destination safely, so please be patient and give yourself extra travel time," Calgary Transit said on its website.

BEST OF THE WEB: Palisades Tahoe, California snow report: 22 inches in 24 hours and 43-inch 3 day storm total

The latest Palisades Tahoe, California, snow report tells a story of remarkable late-season resurgence. A sustained storm cycle has transformed conditions on the upper mountain, logging a foot of new snow overnight and driving the three-day storm total to 43 inches. The resort is now among the last Tahoe areas still operating. Most ski areas across the western U.S. have endured one of their worst seasons in recent memory, with dry and mild conditions since November, leaving many resorts struggling to open meaningful terrain. Palisades has been an exception to that late-season trend this week. Sunny breaks are emerging across the mountain on Monday, though forecasters have not ruled out additional snow showers that could add another inch to the upper elevations before conditions settle. Long-range models continue to show troughing over the region through the third week of April, with additional storm systems possible and a cooler-than-normal pattern expected to persist. The weekend...

Unseasonal rain, snow hit north India in April - Crops suffer damage

April in North India is defying expectations this year, with unseasonal rain, snowfall, and a sharp dip in temperatures replacing the usual summer heat. States like Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi are witnessing winter-like conditions, driven by persistent Western Disturbances. These moisture-laden systems, typically active in winter, have lingered into spring, bringing storms, hail, and cloudy skies. The unusual weather has disrupted daily life and raised concerns among farmers, with significant crop damage reported. Experts warn this could signal increasing climate variability, where shifting patterns blur seasonal boundaries and make weather more unpredictable and potentially more damaging.

Cold Kills — New huge US study links colder months to 40 times as many deaths as warmer ones

We are killing people by making energy expensive Researchers followed 80% of the US population for two decades, and found that cold temperatures contributed to a whopping 800,000 deaths while hot temperatures were linked to only 2,000. They were looking at monthly temperature data in 819 locations across the US. Then they checked the cardiovascular death rates and found the burden of excess deaths is "quite substantial". During cold periods our blood vessels contract to reduce heat loss, which is why our skin looks slightly bluer or whiter in colder weather. But even a small reduction in volume makes our blood pressure rise. So it is not surprising that colder months are linked to significantly higher death rates from heart attacks, strokes, and coronary artery disease compared to milder periods. As the population ages and kidney disease and diabetes get worse, the Nearly every dollar we pour into preventing heat deaths will end up killing more people than it saves. It's time...

April snowfall batters Shimla apple belt, in Himachal Pradesh, India - growers stare at heavy losses

Shimla district witnessed unexpected snowfall on Wednesday, hitting apple orchards at a crucial stage of flowering and fruit setting. Growers across Upper Shimla, including Narkanda and Kotkhai, reported extensive damage, raising concerns over a sharp decline in this season's apple production. The sudden spell of snowfall and hailstorm has damaged apple trees that had just entered the setting phase. Many orchards saw anti-hail nets collapsing under the weight of accumulated snow, while branches of trees broke in several areas. The tender blossoms, essential for fruit formation, were hit hard, and growers fear that the cold conditions will further disrupt pollination. Apple growers say the losses could be significant this year. "The snowfall has come at the worst possible time. The flowers have been damaged, and fruit setting will be affected," said a grower from Kotkhai. With temperatures dropping sharply, the conditions are not favourable for normal crop development.

'That's the worst I've ever seen it': Spring snow storm slams Saskatchewan, Canada - 14.5 inches dumped

Some communities in Saskatchewan are digging out after an Alberta clipper blasted through the province on Tuesday, leaving an abundance of snow in its wake. "Meadow Lake had the most significant report so far at 37 centimeters," said Danielle Desjardin, who is a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada. Prince Albert saw about 18 centimeters of snow, while Saskatoon had 16 centimetres and Nipawin had 15 centimeters, she said. Travel was not recommended on several highways around these communities on Wednesday morning, according to Saskatchewan's Highway Hotline. "On Highway 41 from Melfort going towards Saskatoon ... the snow is probably about two to three feet deep," said Landon Placsko, a psychology student at the University of Saskatchewan, on Wednesday morning. He faced grueling, snow-covered roads while traveling to Saskatoon for classes from his acreage just outside Melfort.

Desert turns snow-white: Unexpected hailstorm blankets parts of Rajasthan, India

The golden sands of the Thar Desert underwent a startling transformation on Friday, April 3, 2026, as a massive hailstorm turned parts of Rajasthan into a landscape resembling the snow-capped valleys of Kashmir. Residents in the Arjunsar and Rajiyasar areas of Bikaner district witnessed a rare atmospheric event that saw temperatures plummet and roads disappear under a thick layer of ice. WHY DID THE THAR DESERT TURN WHITE? While the visuals shared by IFS officer Parveen Kaswan looked like a winter wonderland, this was actually the result of an intense hailstorm triggered by a Western Disturbance. A Western Disturbance is a weather system that originates over the Mediterranean region and travels eastward, bringing moisture and cooling to northwest India. When this moisture-laden air met the intense heat of the desert, it created powerful updrafts.

Intense snowfall mixed with strong gusts of wind, villages buried under astronomical amounts of powder snow... It is almost apocalyptic weather that reigns over these regions in recent days... and the inhabitants will remember it. Who could have predicted that 2026 would go down in history? Both in terms of rainfall and snowfall, it has broken numerous records this year. The many ski resorts still open are proof of this, as the intense snowfall of recent days has once again blanketed the slopes in white. This allows skiers who wish to do so to enjoy the pleasures of skiing one last time at Easter. While the heavy snowfall is a boon for ski resorts, this isn't necessarily the case elsewhere. When winter hasn't yet had its final say in the mountains, sometimes an entire area is paralyzed, as was the case this week.

Canada is still posting sub -40C lows. Schefferville, Quebec has set a new April provincial cold record, plunging to -40.4C (-40.7F) — breaking the previous mark of -40C (-40F) set in 1994 at Bonnard (records in Quebec extend back to the late 1800s). Nearby, Rivière aux Feuilles set a new April record of -39.8C (-39.6F). Kuujjuarapik tanked to -36.2C (-33.2F), smashing its previous April low of -33.9C (-29F), set in 1950 and 1970. Further east, Wabush Lake in Labrador hit -35.3C (-31.5F) — just shy of both its monthly and provincial April records. This is not a one-off event. It follows an exceptionally cold March across northern Canada.

Heavy snowfall has trapped around a dozen people in a remote shelter high in Poland's Tatra Mountains. Following a deterioration in weather and a heightened risk of avalanches, authorities at the Tatra National Park in southern Poland said on Tuesday that all 275 kilometers of trails would be shut until further notice. The extreme winter weather has left around a dozen tourists and staff stranded at a mountain hut in the famous Valley of Five Lakes, the hut's owner, Marta Krzeptowska told the Polish state-owned news agency, PAP. With snow cover in some places reaching up to 180 cm (71 inches) on Tuesday, Krzeptowska said guests would have to remain in the shelter until conditions improved and trails reopened. But she emphasized that the situation is under control.

A powerful late-season storm cycle has delivered a major refresh across the eastern Alps, with Switzerland leading the charge after several days of sustained snowfall. The standout has been Engelberg, where snowfall totals have been exceptional even by mid-winter standards. According to OpenSnow data, the resort received 84 cm (33 inches) in the past 24 hours and 132 cm (52 inches) over the past five days, catapulting conditions back into peak-season form. The storm has been driven by a moist northwesterly flow, favoring northern Alpine regions and creating classic "Nordstau" conditions—where precipitation intensifies as air is forced over the mountains. The storm didn't stop at Switzerland. Zugspitze, Germany's highest peak, was also hammered, with around 1.5 meters (nearly 5 feet) of fresh snow reported in recent days. But that much snow comes with complications. In a post on social media, the resort cautioned: "A lot of snow does not automatically mean a lot of skiing. 1.5...

The heavy snowfall that hit the Elbasan Region last night has temporarily restored the winter atmosphere to the mountainous areas, covering dozens of villages in four municipalities of this region. According to field data, the mountain villages of the municipalities of Elbasan, Librazhd, Gramsh and Prrenjas woke up this morning under a layer of snow ranging from 15 to 25 centimeters. The precipitation began around 20:30 pm yesterday evening and continued with intensity until after midnight, creating a typical winter panorama on the eve of spring. The most affected areas are the Shebenik National Park, the tourist village of Fushë Studen, as well as a number of neighborhoods and villages over 800 meters above sea level in the Administrative Unit of Librazhd, including Orenjë, Qarrishtë, Dragostunjë, Polis, Babje, Dardhë and Xhyrë, where the snow thickness reaches at least 25 centimeters.
Snowfall sweeps across Epirus and Western Macedonia, covering Metsovo, Tzoumerka and Zagori as temperatures drop and authorities deploy snowplows. Greece saw an unexpected return to winter overnight, as snowfall swept across several mountainous regions, turning villages into postcard-like scenes more typical of January than late March. In the northern region of Epirus, snow began falling late in the evening and continued into the early morning, covering high-altitude areas above 3,300 feet (1,000 meters). The phenomenon affected parts of the Ioannina regional unit, including well-known mountain destinations such as Metsovo, Tzoumerka, Konitsa and Zagori. By dawn, Metsovo — a traditional mountain town popular with visitors year-round — was blanketed in fresh snow. Rooftops, streets and surrounding hills were coated in white, while intermittent snowfall and low-hanging clouds added to the subdued, almost hushed atmosphere.

Heavy snowfall in southern Poland has blanketed blooming crocuses in the Chochołowska Valley, a scenic valley in the Tatra Mountains near the Slovak border that is one of the country's best-known signs of spring. After several warm, sunny days brought the flowers into bloom, fresh snowfall has now covered them, raising concerns that this year's display may be less vibrant than usual. By Friday morning, around 15 centimeters of snow had fallen in Zakopane, a popular resort town at the foot of the Tatras, with more forecast later in the day. The return of winter weather has also worsened conditions in the mountains, prompting the Tatra Volunteer Search and Rescue Service (TOPR) to issue a Level 2 avalanche warning. The Chochołowska Valley is famous for its annual crocus bloom, which typically draws large numbers of tourists each spring.

Heavy spring snowfall and strong winds shut key roads towards Croatian coast

A sudden deterioration in weather conditions has disrupted major transport links between inland Croatia and the Adriatic coast on Thursday, after heavy snow, strong winds and rough seas swept across parts of the country. Authorities issued the highest red weather alert for areas around Rijeka and Gospić as a cold front brought intense snowfall and gale-force winds. The severe conditions have forced the closure of key road routes used by freight traffic travelling between the interior and the coastal regions of Kvarner, Istria and Dalmatia. Traffic authorities reported that no open road routes are currently available for lorries with trailers or articulated trucks travelling towards the coast or back inland. Restrictions are in place on several major routes, including motorway and state road sections crossing mountainous regions where winter conditions have developed rapidly.

While many consider March 21 the official start of spring, Environment Canada says meteorological spring begins on March 1. With lingering winter conditions across Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo, including below-seasonal temperatures and record amounts of snow, the agency says a colder-than-normal pattern is expected to continue through the spring months of March, April and May across northern Alberta and the northern Prairies. In its seasonal outlook, Environment Canada forecasts cooler-than-average temperatures across parts of Yukon, the Northwest Territories and northern Prairie regions, including northeastern Alberta. Warmer-than-normal conditions are more likely in southern parts of the Prairies, as well as British Columbia and parts of eastern Canada.

More than 200 inches of snow has fallen in Juneau, Alaska, since the snowfall season began last year, smashing an all-time record for the state capital. Juneau has now logged an extraordinary 201.2 inches of snowfall so far this season, pushing the city past its all‑time seasonal record and underscoring the severity of this year's winter storms. While the city is no stranger to heavy snow, the total far exceeds what even residents of the reliably wintry capital typically see, following months of intense systems that triggered avalanche dangers, buried roadways and contributed to roof collapses earlier in the season. The accumulation marks one of Juneau's most disruptive winters in recent memory, highlighting how persistent, moisture‑packed storms have overwhelmed the city's usual capacity to manage snow.

Antarctica has just reset the bar for March cold. On March 25, temperatures at Vostok Station fell to -76.4C (-105.5F), establishing a new March record for the continent. The previous benchmark stood at -75.7C (-104.3F), recorded at Dome Fuji in 2013 (though this is considered unreliable), with other notable lows including -75.5C (-103.9F) at Plateau Station (1967) and Concordia (2025). At Vostok itself, the prior March low was -75.3C (-103.5F), observed in 1982, 2020, and again yesterday (March 24, 2026).

An astoundingly strong heat wave is not just setting records across the western U.S. — it's pulverizing them Editor's note (3/21/26): Four stations (two in Arizona and two in California) recorded temperatures of 112 degrees Fahrenheit (44.4 degrees Celsius) on Friday, March 20, besting the all-time U.S. March record set just the day before. That is 1 degree F (0.56 degree C) below the all-time April U.S. record. Eight states have set all-time high temperature records for March during this heat wave. On Wednesday in North Shore, Calif., the temperature soared to a stunning 108 degrees Fahrenheit (42 degrees Celsius) — matching the hottest March temperature on record for the state. And then, on Thursday, Phoenix, Ariz., hit 105 degrees F (41 degrees C) — the earliest such recording by more than a month. And that same day, the temperature just outside Martinez Lake, Ariz., reached 110 degrees F (43 degrees C) — the highest March temperature ever recorded in the U.S. The heat wave that...

Holiday hotspot Tenerife has been hit by snow as Storm Therese continues to make its way across Europe. Shocked tourists expecting a sunny Easter break have been capturing snowfall, with the Canary Islands remaining under a weather alert following days of rainfall and high winds. Forecasters are expecting the wild weather to continue for at least another five days, bringing flight cancellations on Thursday and dozens earlier in the week. Winds have reached around 75mph, while snow and rainfall have led to roads being closed for safety. President of Tenerife, Rosa Dávila, said: "Starting today at 3pm, the island emergency response system is put into operation to prepare for an episode of adverse weather that will affect Tenerife over the coming days."

For the first time Antarctic ice core teams have got hold of ice that is 3 million years old and the results have confounded them. The way CO2 responds in ice cores is canon to "the faith" so this is more important than it seems at first glance. Believers are really struggling. Three million years ago the world was warmer, and about to cool into the violent ice age cycles. The ice core experts were expecting to confirm that CO2 levels were about 400ppm, as other proxies had shown, and they thought that greenhouse gases might fall and lead the cooling shift. But instead of CO2 being at 400 parts per million, and then leading the cooling, the bubbles trapped in ice were only 250 parts per million to start with and they stayed constant through important temperature swings. Sacre Bleu! CO2 did not appear to have any role in causing the warmth that was, or the cooling that followed. And nor did methane. O' the dilemma? Some sacred cows have to be sacrificed. Either CO2 is not a major...

Blizzard conditions will taper off into Tuesday, March 17, for Michigan's Upper Peninsula and the northern Lower Peninsula. Snowfall reports show 31 inches fell in the central U.P., with additional inches underway. On Monday, March 16, a blizzard warning, ice storm warning, winter storm warning, lakeshore flooding, and a wind advisory are issued for Michigan — ice is forecast to accumulate in the northeast-central Lower Peninsula, and snowbelt areas are expected to see up to 20 inches by Tuesday morning, March 17, per the Probabilistic Precipitation Portal. Statewide, wind gusts will be strong from 45-60 mph. On 6:30 a.m. Monday, March 16, 31 inches of snow was reported in Three Lakes (located in the central U.P) via the National Weather Service's online local snowfall reports — which was a 48-hour accumulation. A nearby city, National Mine, reported 30 inches of snow.

"The strongest snowfall this winter in Mallorca" is how geographer Alberto Darder has described the recent weather event affecting the island over the past hours. The snow began to fall late on Saturday, 14 March, and continued until around 2am on Sunday. Darder specified that snow fell from altitudes of 800 metres upwards, marking the lowest snow level observed this winter on the island. This was unexpected, especially since the national weather service, the Agencia Estatal de Meteorología (Aemet) in the Balearics, had forecasted snow only above 1,000 metres. As visible in videos shared by Darder from the Serra de Tramuntana, the snowfall was intense.

North America Intro Weekly Snow News for North America, updated 12 March 2026: Rockies receive up to 90cm (36") snowfall while spring warmth spreads across eastern resorts. Springlike conditions continue to dominate across much of North America. While western regions have experienced a generally mild winter overall, the recent warmth is more unusual along the East Coast, which endured months of bitter cold earlier in the season. Some resorts across the East Coast and Midwest were forced to close temporarily over the past week due to heavy rain. The Rockies did see a brief return of winter conditions heading into last weekend. Several resorts reported significant snowfall totals, with some locations seeing up to three feet (90cm) in 24 hours, though most recorded closer to 6 - 12 inches (15 - 30cm). Since then, sunshine has returned and temperatures have been climbing again. Along the Pacific Coast, conditions have also been largely mild and sunny, although the Pacific Northwest is...

A night of snowfall and lower temperatures has covered several mountains in the municipality of Villanueva del Trabuco with a white blanket on Tuesday morning. The snowfall has been particularly visible in places such as Sierra Gorda and Sierra de San Jorge, the peaks of which are completely white. Snow fell in the early hours of Tuesday due to the arrival of a cold drop (known as a 'dana' in Spain) from the north-west. This caused an abrupt change in atmospheric conditions. The rapid advance of this high altitude depression towards the south has generated instability in a large part of the country. For Tuesday, state meteorological agency Aemet has activated snowfall warnings in several areas of the Andalucía.

This winter's record snowfall that has hit the Tohoku region and Niigata Prefecture has caused serious agricultural damage such as breaking branches on fruit trees and causing vinyl greenhouses to collapse. Because many farm roads remain buried in snow, confirming the extent of the damage done so far will take a long time, and it could be worse than in typical years. "I can only sigh because more branches have been broken than last year," a farmer said in mid-February while carefully digging up branches buried in the snow in an apple orchard in Hirosaki, Aomori Prefecture. In January, the city saw a record snowfall of 148 centimeters. Last winter, broken branches on apple trees alone caused more than ¥20 billion in damage in the prefecture. The yield from his 5-hectare farm dropped by nearly 10 tonnes, down over 10% from typical years. Branches have been broken over a wide area this year, and he said, "I'm afraid this year's yield will be lower than last year's."

The one-eyed science monster is here again to scare teenage girlies No one is funded to poke holes in the CO2-octopus, so researchers can follow a silly idea for a long time. In a normal world someone would have scoffed and squashed this horror show in the tea room. It is yet another meaningless correlation pretending to be a dangerous trend. Supposedly rising levels of carbon dioxide in the air around us is tainting our very blood, causing a public health crisis. Atmospheric CO2 is "higher than anything humans ever experienced" says Dr Phil Bierwirth, worried that current CO2 levels are beyond what we evolved to deal with, and 100% wrong. Poor Dr Bierworth obviously doesn't realize that even though atmospheric CO2 has risen from 320ppm to 420ppm, normal indoor CO2 levels are 500 to 1,000 ppm, and the air we breathe out is 40,000ppm. We don't need a quarter century to raise our blood CO2 levels — we can hold our breath and get there in sixty seconds. Or we just need to go jogging....

Over 3 feet of snow in 48 hours dumped on Vancouver Island's mountain ranges

Officials are warning anyone heading into the backcountry to use extreme caution after more than 100 centimetres of snow blanketed parts of Vancouver Island's mountain ranges over the weekend, creating a high avalanche risk. Avalanche Canada said snow sliding was at its highest danger level on Monday and could remain there through the week, depending on conditions. The warning was issued for the mountain terrain from Lake Cowichan to Port McNeill. Several natural and skier-induced slides have already been reported in Strathcona Provincial Park. Avalanche Canada forecaster Martina Halik said the new snow is burying a widespread hoar frost layer, creating "touchy avalanche conditions." She said the fine crystallized hoar frost layer isn't immediately bonding with the new snow and can break under the load of heavy snowfall, creating a high hazard. "That's the biggest problem right now," Halik said Monday. "This slab of storm snow on top of these feathery crystals creates persistent...

A major storm hit the US east coast on Monday, bringing record-breaking snow that caused disruptions for millions and thousands of flight cancellations. Parts of Rhode Island and Massachusetts have seen nearly 37in (94cm) of snowfall, with more than 19in in New York City's Central Park, the National Weather Service (NWS) said. Weather warnings stretched from North Carolina to northern Maine, with some in place further north in parts of eastern Canada. More than 600,000 properties on the US east coast endured power outages, while the Boston Globe - a major US newspaper - said it will not go to print for the first time in its 153-year history due to the storm. Travel across the region has been severely limited, with some states and cities implementing travel bans during the worst period of the storm.

BEST OF THE WEB: Europe's mounting avalanche death toll: 86 so far this winter with record downfalls burying ski resorts

Europe's avalanche crisis is escalating, with 86 people including at least four Brits killed this season as severe snowfall and unstable mountain conditions wreak havoc across the Alps and beyond. France has recorded the highest toll so far with 25 deaths, followed by Italy with 21 and Austria with 14, while Switzerland has lost nine and Spain eight. Slovakia reported four deaths and Slovenia three, with a single death in Andorra. The vast majority of victims were caught in wind slab avalanches or collapses linked to persistent weak layers buried deep within the snow, often triggered after fresh downfalls. Most were skiing off piste or travelling in backcountry terrain, with others killed while mountaineering, climbing or hiking.

18 avalanches reported in 24 hours as skiers flock to snow-covered mountains in Utah

Nearly two dozen avalanches were reported across Utah's mountains over the last 24 hours, and several were determined to be human-triggered. The Utah Avalanche Center reported 18 avalanches on Wednesday, eight of which were human-triggered. This comes after several warnings of increased avalanche dangers across the state as winter made its return with more than a foot of snow falling on Utah's mountains. Leading up to Wednesday's storm, the Utah Avalanche Center issued an "Avalanche Watch," which was upgraded to a "Warning" the next day. Forecasters said the heavy snow from the storm overloaded widespread fragile layers of weak, faceted snow that formed during the winter dry spell.
