Fort St. John in British Columbia sets snowfall record for Sept. 11 of 7 centimetres

SNOW
Good morning, Fort St. John, it turns out the weatherman was right about the snow, but the good news is that we don't need to shovel.

Environment Canada reports seven centimetres of snow was recorded at the airport weather station over the last 24 hours — and the five centimetres that fell Tuesday, Sept. 11 is good for a new record, beating the 2.4 cm recorded in 1993.

Another two centimetres fell overnight, and the snow is expected to clear by noon, falling short of the record 12.7 cm that fell on Sept. 12, 1936.

Meteorologist Jim Goosen says the snow arrived thanks to "a pipeline" of cold air from the high arctic.

Comment: Parts of British Columbia are already seeing snow

Antarctic iceberg A-68 is on the move after year-long standstill

The Antarctic iceberg A-68 has begun to spin. After a year-long standstill, the massive chunk of ice is on the move.

A-68 split from the Larsen C ice shelf last July. Scientists predicted the giant iceberg would begin to fragment shortly after its separation.

But over the last year, A-68 has remained mostly intact, anchored to the Bawden Ice Rise, a shallow seabed near the edge of the Larsen ice shelf. Scientists used satellite images to monitor the iceberg, but until now, there was little movement to report.

Now, just more than year after it first separated, A-68 is beginning to drift again.

Adapt 2030 Ice Age Report: Arctic voyages thwarted by thick ice - Coast Guard issues warning

Northwest Passage is ice clogged and closed, Canadian Coast Guard WARNING do not attempt the passage or be prepared to overwinter in the Arctic. Maersk plans to run the Arctic with shipping vessels, but blacked by ice a well as 22 other pleasure craft. Above normal ice in NW Passage and 4th most ice on record since 2014. I don't think the corporate media is giving us all of the information.

Icebreaker encounters most difficult ice conditions in 15 years in the Arctic

A Swedish icebreaker on the way to the North Pole has encountered heavy ice conditions and had to stop just before the North Pole.

The Swedish icebreaker Oden embarked to the North Pole from Svalbard last week but encountered difficult ice conditions not seen in one and a half decades.

The captain of the Oden icebreaker described the ice conditions as the most difficult in the past fifteen years.

The pack ice the ship encountered north of 80° was very dense, piled together through a months-long northward ice drift in the Central Arctic Ocean, meereisportal.de reports.

Overall, however, the Arctic's summer sea ice extent is again very small; the Oden hit the ice edge only at 82°N.

As ice and snow return, summer's over in Nunavut, Canada

This map from the Canadian Ice Service shows sea ice conditions in the western part of High Arctic islands on Sept. 4.
© CISThis map from the Canadian Ice Service shows sea ice conditions in the western part of High Arctic islands on Sept. 4. The dark blue shows a low concentration (less than 10 per cent) of ice, while white shows a high concentration (100 per cent). At this time of the year, the Arctic ice cover is the highest it has been since 2014, the National Snow and Ice Data Center said Sept. 5. That's although the minimum ice extent is expected to be one of the 10 lowest in the satellite record, the NSIDC said.
"It was a cold summer"

Snow has now fallen across Nunavut's more northerly communities, from Kugluktuk to Qikiqtarjuaq, after a summer that also brought cool temperatures and heavy ice conditions to some parts of Nunavut.

So, if you were planning on snorkelling through the Northwest Passage, as one group plans to do in 2020, or taking a cruise ship through the storied Northwest Passage, this year might not have been a good choice.

"if you're trying to get somewhere, and ice is in the way, it's been a very bad year," said Gilles Langis, a senior ice forecaster with the Canadian Ice Service.

It remains unclear if ice played a role in the grounding of the Ioffe Akademik on Aug. 24. The cruise ship was not sailing where it was supposed to be due to ice, according to an account by the journalist and author Ed Struzik, who was on board.

Yellowknife's year of meteorological misery continued apace on Wednesday as the elements elected to snow on the city's residents.

A brief flurry in the early morning hours resulted in a dusting of Facebook posts by around 7am.

The development suggests fall will follow summer as the second successive season to be mislaid.

However, snow in early September is not without precedent.

September 5 in 1964 produced more than six centimetres of snow, Environment Canada records from Yellowknife Airport's weather station suggest.

This past weekend, we had a couple slushy inches of the white stuff, with several viewers noting and photographing it and sending it in...yes, snow atop "America's Mountain." And today, more fresh snowfall! Now, it is not rare for snow to fall atop Pikes Peak every month of the calendar year, but it gets your attention that winter snow can't be too far off.

By the way, the earliest snow on record for Springs is September 2nd, and a week later (Sept 10) for Pueblo. While we don't foresee any opportunity for snow in the lower elevations for at least the next 3 weeks, views like this one happen now, and become more and more likely, as we go through September!

While much of the country is still in the dog days of summer one Colorado has jumped a few seasons forward.

Video taken in Fairplay, Colorado shows the town covered in snowfall more — than 100 days until winter begins.

According to the National Weather Service, snow was measured at a depth of two inches on Wednesday at Hoosier Pass, a mountain pass located in the Mosquito Range.

It's not that shocking that the area would see snowfall — it's located at an elevation of 11,000 feet.
