The US government's recent acknowledgment of
Area 51, a secretive military base, has only fueled the fire of conspiracy theories and speculation that have long surrounded it.

Once a testing facility during the Cold War, this base has been the subject of rumors about crashed alien ships and their alleged reverse engineering.
The National Security Archive of George Washington University has published a report called
'The Secret History of the U-2', which contains several references to Area 51. The report includes declassified documents obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request.
However, the declassified documents do not mention any remotely alien activity in the installation. While it is no surprise that the US government has not disclosed any information regarding the alleged reverse engineering of alien ships,
some believe that the government is covering up the truth about extraterrestrial activity.According to nuclear physicist Stanton Friedman, there are several reasons why governments try to cover up the facts concerning flying saucers and their occupants. One reason is that the military wants to understand how they work because they could become excellent weapons systems. Therefore, revealing information about the matter can compromise them, especially if their enemies manage to understand it first.
Throughout modern UFO history, governments such as the US have resorted to extensive "debunking" campaigns, explaining the phenomenon prosaically with balloon probes, reflections of planets, thermal inversions, etc. Another cover-up strategy adopted by recalcitrant UFO skeptics has been to explain all phenomenology as a product of prototypes and top-secret planes, saying that everything must be of terrestrial origin. However, some believe that the development of secret prototypes has been used to cover up cases of flying objects of extraterrestrial origin. Some of the developments of cutting-edge aircraft have ironically reverse engineering applied to ships of extraterrestrial origin or "inspiration."
The CIA's assertion that the U-2 and later OXCART were responsible for over half of all UFO reports in the 1950s, and a significant portion in the 1960s is widely disputed. According to historian and writer Jerry Haines, the U-2 spy plane, which began operations in August 1955, coincided with a reported increase in UFO sightings by commercial pilots and air traffic controllers.
The U-2, despite its large wingspan and high altitude of 60 to 70,000 feet, is not invisible.
This fact raises questions about how a spy plane designed to go unnoticed could account for hundreds or thousands of UFO sightings. It's more plausible to consider other explanations, such as high-altitude balloons or Project Skyhook, a program identified by Air Force and civilian investigators.

Most sightings happen at night when the U-2 plane cannot be seen. Reviewing statistics from Project Blue Book (1952-1969), a series of UFO studies by the United States Air Force, including sightings by pilots, air traffic controllers, military personnel, and civilians, shows that sightings DECLINED when the U-2 plane began taking to the skies. In the early 1960s, many aircraft were painted black and other camouflage colors to reduce potential.
