France's MPs back law banning protective face masks and 'troublemakers' from protests

Yellow Vest protests in France.
The French National Assembly has overwhelmingly supported the controversial "anti-riot" law, which bans demonstrators from hiding their faces and allows the authorities to bar those they deem as 'troublemakers' from protesting.

Despite claims that it may curb civil liberties and a heated debate in the parliament, the legislation was backed on Tuesday by 387 MPs, with only 92 "no" votes.

The anti-riot law makes it illegal for protesters to hide their faces, gives law enforcement more powers to remove potential "troublemakers" from rallies, and allows the authorities to ban some individuals from even showing up at demonstrations.

Comment: RT is misreporting the facts here: More than a dozen people have been killed while hundreds have been injured and maimed, thousands have been unlawfully detained. This new law is designed to further intimidate protesters, who enjoy the majority of support in France, but will actually just confirm that their civil liberties are being violated in order to protect the corrupt status quo: Also check out SOTT radio's:

Iran vows "crushing and proportional" response to relentless Israeli strikes in Syria

Tehran has warned of a "crushing and proportional response" unless Israel stops its bombing campaign in Syria, which, according to Tel Aviv, is aimed only at curbing Iranian influence in the region and its borders in particular.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have been waging an active campaign against alleged Iranian and Hezbollah targets in Syria for years, claiming complete intel and air superiority and full right to protect its national security. Despite "thousands" of Israeli strikes, which a former IDF chief of staff admitted to in December, Iran has yet to openly retaliate - but is open to any options.

"In case of continued acts, the measures foreseen for deterrence and for a crushing and proportional response will be activated to give a lesson to the liar and criminal Israeli rulers," the secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani told Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al Muallem in Tehran on Tuesday.

Where's the evidence? Moscow responds to Macron's claim that Russian media buy social media accounts to destabilize France

French President Emmanuel Macron
© Reuters / Ludovic MarinFrench President Emmanuel Macron
French President Emmanuel Macron is spreading fake news to undermine the work of the Russian media, if his recent interview with Le Point is anything to go by, a Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said.

Before Yellow Vests went out to the streets in the twelfth weekend of consecutive mass demonstrations against the government's economic policies, weekly political magazine Le Point published an interview with President Macron. There he blamed the scale of public discontent on Russians, social media, the far right and the far left.

"If it's confirmed that Macron said that RT and Sputnik are buying social media accounts to destabilize the situation in Frаnce - this is real fake news," Maria Zakharova told RT.

Comment: Macron is obviously desperate - desperate to shift blame for the legitimate criticisms leveled at him by over 70% of his country. But like most neo-liberal political hack stooges all he can do is further dig himself into a hole. Woe to the French who have to contend with such a globalist tool. See also:

War Whore

Is the American suspension of INF Treaty aimed at China?

So it's done. The US has suspended its participation in the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty, and Russia soon followed suit. This almost certainly spells an end to this late Cold War relic, which banned the two superpowers from deploying ground-launched ballistic missiles and cruise missiles with ranges of 500-5,500km. There have been recriminations all round. But in the end, so far as two of the world's three most greatest military Powers are concerned, upholding the INF Treaty could never have been done exactly to the letter.

Craig Murray: From Karachi to Caracas

Karachi street
© DawnStreet scene in Karachi, Pakistan
I am finding Karachi an interesting place from which to view the world. Four US Presidents have visited Pakistan - Eisenhower, Nixon, Clinton and Bush Jr. Each of them visited a military dictator, in the friendliest of terms. No American President has ever visited a civilian government of Pakistan. The Americans have always been far too busy plotting the next coup.

More recent neo-con practice has of course been to eschew open espousal of military dictatorship and to present CIA-organised coups as democratic revolutions. I was of course aware of their hand behind Juan Guaido in Venezuela, but I had not fully taken on board the extent to which Guaido is purely their creature. If you have not seen this superb article on Guaido's history in Consortium News, please do read it. Guaido has been US-funded since 2005 specifically to undermine the socialist government of Venezuela. Notably the US sponsorship of this far right puppet started at a time when Chavez' democratic and human rights credentials were impeccable, which rather undermines the current excuse for Guaido's elevation.

Brazil on edge as farmers eye virgin forest land

While speculation swirls on how long new president Jair Bolsonaro may last, his right-wing government is laying the groundwork for a takeover of chunks of virgin Amazon forest by hardcore agribusiness groups

A specter haunts the Brazilian elites. His name is Lula - the former president and for the past nine months one of the world's most notorious political prisoners, given his enormous popularity and the controversy over his conviction and jailing.

Brazil, until recently a leader of the Global South, BRICS member and eighth largest economy in the world, remains on edge, after President Bolsonaro's widely panned appearance at Davos, plus dramatic details about dangerous liaisons between the Bolsonaro clan and one of the most notorious criminal gangs in Rio, not to mention Saudi Arabia's veto of Brazilian meat imports due to the new president's promise to transfer the Brazilian embassy to Jerusalem.

All that puts the spotlight on the strongman-in-waiting, vice president and retired general Hamilton Mourao.

Deadline passed, group of EU states recognize Guaido as Venezuela's interim leader

The UK, France, and Spain among a number of countries, have announced their recognition of Juan Guaido as Venezuela's interim president after Caracas did not cave into an ultimatum calling for snap elections with eight days.

"Nicolas Maduro has not called Presidential elections within 8 day limit we have set. So UK alongside European allies now recognises @jguaido as interim constitutional president until credible elections can be held," UK Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt wrote in a tweet on Monday.

Germany, France, and Spain issued nearly identical warnings in late January, stating that they would recognize Guaido as the legitimate leader of Venezuela unless new elections were held. The date for this to happen expired overnight, from February 3 to February 4.

RT: EU gives Venezuela ultimatum
FM Sergey Lavrov weighs in:
"The EU believes it has the right to dictate conditions for international mediation efforts," Lavrov said during his visit to Bishkek on Monday. "It is not mediation. It is an ultimatum."

The Russian foreign minister also criticized the bloc for setting up a contact group in Venezuela, which includes several EU and Latin American countries. "Neither we, nor China, nor the United States were invited," he stated, calling for all parties to "gather and negotiate first."

Lavrov reiterated that Maduro is ready for talks with the opposition without preconditions for the sake of "national peace," but Guaido, backed by the US and EU, refused the negotiations. Guaido declared that the upcoming month would be a "breaking point" in the opposition's struggle for power and called for massive protests on February 12.
RT: Venezuela strongly rejects EU backing for Guido, promises to 'revise relations' with bloc
The Venezuelan government has emphatically rejected EU member states' decision to back opposition leader Juan Guaido as interim president, saying Caracas will now revise its relationship with these countries. Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza accused the EU of officially submitting to the US strategy to overthrow the Venezuelan government.

The statement, which expressed the "most energetic rejection" to the EU states' decision, added that the Venezuelan government will now revise its bilateral relations with EU countries who have recognized Guaido as the legitimate interim president.

The announcement from Caracas comes as the Netherlands joined Germany, the UK, France, Spain, Sweden, Belgium, and Denmark in recognizing Guaido after earlier calling on the constitutionally-elected President Nicolas Maduro to run fresh elections - a request he denied.

Ireland has also proposed a more cautious approach towards Guaido, instead lending support to fresh elections. "We want to see free and fair elections for the people to make a democratic decision in Venezuela," Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney said.

CNN tipped off by Mueller's prosecutor regarding FBI raid on Roger Stone

Roger Stone
© Reuters/Leah MillsRoger Stone
A draft copy of the indictment against Trump adviser Roger Stone may have been deliberately leaked by the chief prosecutor to CNN, tipping them off to the FBI raid on the "dirty trickster's" home last week, Stone's lawyer says.

Pointing to the lack of court filing markings on the indictment draft, as well as metadata that includes the initials of chief special counsel prosecutor Andrew Weissmann, Stone lawyer Grant Smith urged Republican leaders to investigate how CNN ended up with the critical file when the indictments were supposed to remain sealed until after Stone was taken into custody.

It was CNN reporter Sara Murray who informed Smith his own client had been arrested at about 6:11 am on January 25 - and who provided him with a draft copy of the indictment, Smith wrote in a letter reconstructing the morning of Stone's arrest that he sent to Sen. Lindsay Graham (R-South Carolina), chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and Rep. Doug Collins (R-Georgia), ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee.

The CNN crew claimed to have staked out Stone's house on a hunch, but their statement fails to explain the draft indictment in the reporter's possession. Smith also provided a copy of the document to the Gateway Pundit, showing the creator's name as "AAW" - which they say likely stands for Andrew Weissmann.

Bertrand Russell diagnoses Washington's war madness and its oncoming rape of Venezuela

VenezMural
© Sergey Mamontov/SputnikMural in Caracas, Venezuela
It is a scene depressingly familiar to inhabitants of Political Washington over the past 30 years since US armed invasion of small or vulnerable countries came back into fashion after being briefly discredited following the Vietnam War. This time it is Venezuela and its twice democratically-elected President Nicolas Maduro that is being demonized as a Diabolical Menace to the very survival of All That is Good and True.

One does not have to uncritically admire everything President Maduro has done as leader of his country to confidently predict what will happen if the US government succeeds in toppling him and imposing its own ridiculous figurehead - boyish, fearful, eager-to-please little Juan Guiado: Venezuela's version of Mario Rubio and the nonentity being touted as his country's liberator (how the spirit of Simon Bolivar must be raging - or laughing uncontrollably!).

Then, the miseries of the unfortunate Venezuelan people will not end: They will only just have begun.

Comment: There seems to be no human price outrageous enough to halt the mania to control and plunder - a distinction Trump's neocon cabinet members appear to have in common.

Hungarian foreign minister: 'Brussels is going ahead with mass migration plan despite 9 EU countries rejecting it'

Hungarian FM Péter Szijjártó
© Zsolt Burger/Ministry of Foreign Affairs and TradeHungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó
"Pro-migration leaders in Brussels have again been found siding with the United Nations Global Migration Compact," Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said in Brussels on Monday, insisting that "they want to pass the package despite nine EU members voting against it".

After a meeting of foreign ministers of the EU and Arab League, Szijjártó said, "Plans have been made both in New York and Brussels to have components of the pact passed, failing the package being adopted wholesale."

"Hungary does not support the migration compact and has made clear that it will resist any subsequent attempt to adopt it," Szijjártó said. The Hungarian government "will not talk about migration as something to be handled as if there were no security considerations," the minister said. Hungary, he added, "will carry on refusing to conspire to bring back the UN compact through the back door."

Comment: The Hungarian government, and supportive Hungarian political parties, are facing sanctions - including being banned from the European parliament - just for pointing out the fact that the EU is pushing mass migration on Europeans.

That democrazi for you.
