A 'historic' winter storm will blast the northern Rockies this weekend

US snow forecast
© The Weather ChannelUp to 50 inches of snow are expected to fall in Western Montana, while winter storm watches have been issued in eastern Washington, the Idaho panhandle and northwestern Wyoming
It's the very beginning of fall and the northern Rocky Mountains are bracing for a significant winter storm that could pummel the mountains with feet of snow and blizzard conditions this weekend.

"This has the potential to be a historically significant early-season snow event," the National Weather Service in Great Falls, Montana, said.A cold front with strong winds and near-record cold air will move through Idaho and Montana on Friday. It will be followed by another low-pressure system that will stall over the region Friday night through Sunday.

With unseasonably cold air already in place, wet, heavy snow is likely from the valleys to the mountain tops. The forecast for this storm looks eerily similar to a storm that struck Montana in 1934. That storm produced prolific amounts of snow in late September over North Central Montana.

This weekend, a few inches to feet of snow could fall across the region. The impacts will start tonight along the Continental Divide.

By Monday, the mountains will have storm totals being measured in feet. Areas near Glacier National park will see two to three feet of snow.Snow won't start to accumulate in most of the valleys until Saturday night.

Since this is an early season storm and the ground is still warm, most of the first snow to fall will likely melt. In some lower elevations, it may not even accumulate.

Hurricane Lorenzo becomes a rare eastern Atlantic Ocean category 4

Lorenzo rapidly intensified into a Category 4 hurricane Thursday farther east in the Atlantic Ocean than all but one hurricane on record.

The storm is currently not threatening land, but it may do so when it approaches the Azores next week as a weaker, but still formidable hurricane.

Lorenzo strengthened from a tropical storm on Tuesday into a hurricane on Wednesday, before reaching Category 4 hurricane strength by late Thursday morning.

September 2010's Hurricane Julia is the only other hurricane on record to intensify to Category 4 status farther east in the Atlantic Ocean than Lorenzo, according to Dr. Phil Klotzbach, a tropical scientist at Colorado State University.

If considering only those Category 4 hurricanes from Sept. 26 through the end of the season since the 1960s, Lorenzo is even more of an anomaly, noted Richard Dixon, a meteorologist at CatInsight and visiting research fellow at the University of Reading.

They were reportedly struck by the lightning when they sat under a tree to take refuge from the ensuing rain.

Heavy rain, strong winds and rough seas brought by Tropical Storm Karen have caused severe damage in the dual-island nation of Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean.

Tobago

Areas in the south western tip of the island of Tobago were badly affected from around 21 September. Strong winds downed trees and power lines, blocking roads and causing power and telecommunication outages. All schools have been closed. Nine shelters were set up to house families displaced by the severe weather.

Several boats were damaged in the rough seas in the Plymouth area, where a jetty was destroyed. Storm surge and high waves also caused coastal flooding damaging some buildings in Plymouth.

'Forming like roaches': Six tropical storms whirling at once in Western hemisphere have tied a record

September is the peak month for hurricane and tropical storm activity in both the Atlantic and Pacific, NOAA reports.

Sure, it's the middle of hurricane season. But this is ridiculous.

The six named storms whirling at once this week in the Atlantic and Pacific hit a record first set in 1992, forecasters reported.

"While Humberto and Kiko were spinning in the Atlantic and Eastern Pacific, four new tropical cyclones formed Tuesday: Imelda and Jerry in the Atlantic Basin, and Mario and Lorena in the Eastern Pacific Basin," the Weather Channel reported.

Tropical Depression Imelda dumps more than 40 inches of rain on Southeast Texas - 5th wettest tropical cyclone for the contiguous US

Imelda flooding
Vehicles were nearly submerged Thursday morning near the Elegante Hotel in Beaumont.

Tropical Depression Imelda might not have the same ring as Hurricane Imelda, but the impacts of the storm are for real. The National Weather Service has issued a civil emergency warning as a flooding crisis unfolds in the region rocked by Harvey's historic floods just two years ago.

Upwards of 40 inches of rain have fallen along the Texas Gulf Coast over the past 72 hours with the highest total of 41.81 inches reported so far. That makes Imelda the fifth wettest tropical cyclone to hit the Lower 48 on record, and it could rise in the record books in the coming hours.

Embedded within the heavy rainstorm totals are shocking bouts of downpours. That includes nearly 30 inches of rain falling over a 12-hour period in Mayhaw Bayou, a weather station located about 60 miles east of Houston. Multiple locations have also reported one-hour rainfall in excess of five inches, which is, meteorologically speaking, a crap-ton of rain.

The widespread heavy rain has led to dangerous flash flood conditions as creeks overflow and stormwater management systems back up. Water rescues are already underway in parts of the greater Houston area with boats using flooded out highways to reach stranded citizens. Harris County's sheriff tweeted that emergency managers were receiving a "high volume of calls for high-water rescues at homes and for stranded motorists," and things will continue to deteriorate as Imelda crawls inland.
