Flights grounded, highways closed as snowstorms hit northeast China

Snowstorms in China's northernmost province of Heilongjiang have grounded more than 100 flights and forced expressways and schools to be closed, local authorities said Thursday.

The province's meteorological center has issued a red alert for heavy snow, the highest in China's weather warning system, and upgraded the emergency response to the second-highest level.

Snowfall of up to 25.8 mm was recorded in cities including Harbin and Mudanjiang, bringing a blanket of snow 17 cm deep in some places, according to the center.

Educational authorities in Harbin, the provincial capital of Heilongjiang, said primary and middle schools and kindergartens in the city would be closed on Thursday due to heavy snowfall.

The strongest weather system so far this season brought a healthy supply of snow to the Sierra, with multiple ski resorts in the Lake Tahoe-area receiving over a foot in a 24-hour stretch.

Heavy snow developed over the mountains on Tuesday afternoon and snow showers continued into Wednesday morning, causing traffic delays for unprepared drivers while producing solid snow totals.

On the upper mountains at Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows, 16 inches fell as the resort prepares to open both mountains on Nov. 25.

"The storm came in wet and dropped heavy, saturated snow that is perfect for this time of year, as it creates a strong base layer that thoroughly coats the ground," Public Relations Specialist Alex Spychalsky said in a release.

Over 90,000 residents of the city are left without electricity

The Vostochnaya Combined Heat and Power Plant (CHPP) in Vladivostok has halted electricity generation because of heavy ice with wind, press service of the Russian Energy Ministry told TASS on Thursday.

"The Energy Ministry exercises special control over power supply in the Primorsky Region: a portion of power transmission line turned off due to heavy snow with wind; Vostochnaya CHPP halted electricity generation, and power supply to a portion of consumers has been disrupted," the press service says.

Series of powerful storms boost early season snowpack in the Teton Mountains - up to 68 inches fell in 9 days

A series of powerful winter storms brought heavy snowfall to the Tetons over the past week. Through the first week of November, snow cover in the mountains was very light, but that changed in a hurry over the past seven days.

From November 9 through 16, the Rendezvous Bowl Plot at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort recorded 60 inches of snow, and if you go back to November 7, that total expands to 68 inches. The Rendezvous Bowl Plot eclipsed its average November snowfall (which is 59 inches) in just one week.

Heavy snow fell in the valley as well, with one-week totals ranging from 1-2 feet. Impressive for mid-November!

The summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa got a light snowcap Sunday morning.

Cold temperatures aloft combined with some moisture to give the state's two tallest mountains a dusting of snow overnight.

Web cams near the summits of both mountains on the Big Island showed a thin coat of snow on the ground.

The National Weather Service said temperatures were cold enough Sunday morning to support more snow showers, but no significant accumulations were expected.

Up until Saturday, three feet of snow was recorded in Mahodand and two each in Kalam, Malam Jabba and adjoining areas.

Lower Dir was in the grips of an extreme cold weather on Sunday after experiencing what was said to be record rain and snowfall that continued for a second day.

Snowfall in Gilgit, Chitral

The first snow, and rainfall in multiple parts of Pakistan have signaled the arrival of winter in the country.

Northern areas such as Chitral, Abbottabad, parts of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Nathiagali experienced the season's first snowfall along with cool winds.

Following this, the temperatures dropped, forcing residents to take out their jackets, sweaters and blankets.

In Chitral, over three feet of snow was recorded in the last two days. Due to this, multiple roads to and from the city were blocked. Ghizar experienced a similar situation.

Yesterday (Nov. 13) was a good day for ski resorts, especially Big White Ski Resort.

In the past 24 hours, 50 centimeters (20 inches) of new snow has fallen, 77 cm (30 in) in the past seven days.

The alpine snow base is now 68 cm (27 in) deep, and the total cumulative snowfall is 94 cm (37 in).

After more than 2 feet of snow and more expected to come in the mountains, Bogus Basin announced Friday its hike park will be open again this weekend.

The non-profit recreation area announced the free ski/snowboard park will be open this Saturday and Sunday.

Over the past five days, the park has seen an additional two feet of snow. With the natural snow and snow making efforts, Bogus Basin is ready for the season to open Nov. 27, according to a news release.

"In my 32 years at Bogus Basin, I've never seen so much snow this early in the season," said Nate Shake, director of Mountain Operations, in a news release.

It's Friday the 13th and those who had plans to travel over the mountain passes might be cursing their luck as a strong winter-type storm pummeled the Cascades.

Heavy snow combined with blustery winds to bring near white-out conditions to I-90 along Snoqualmie Pass, according to the WSDOT.

Multiple spinouts have forced occasional closures of the pass. Eastbound lanes were shut down just after 8:30 a.m. for about an hour to clear wrecks, WSDOT officials said while westbound remained open with chains required. Earlier, multiple spinouts closed a 37-mile stretch of I-90 through much of the mountains late Thursday night into the wee hours of Friday morning, reopening just after 1 a.m. with chain requirements for all vehicles except 4 wheel/all wheel drive.

Studying the JET STREAM has long been an indicator of the weather to come, and to study the jet stream attention must turn to the SUN.

When solar activity is HIGH, the jet stream is tight and stable and follows somewhat of a straight path. But when solar activity is LOW, that meandering band of air flowing 6 miles above our heads becomes weak and wavy, it effectively buckles which diverts frigid Polar air to atypically low latitudes and replaces it with warmer tropical air.

The jet stream reverts from a Zonal Flow to a Meridional Flow and, depending on which side of the jet stream you're on, you're either in for a spell of unseasonably cold or hot weather and/or a period of unusually dry or wet conditions.
