If the chances of getting struck by lightning are slim, the chances of 323 reindeer getting struck by lightning must be miniscule, but that's exactly what seems to have happened on a mountain plateau in Norway.

When Knut Nylend, an official from the Norwegian Nature Inspectorate (Statens naturoppsyn - NNI) went out on a routine inspection near Hardangervidda National Park on Friday, he wasn't expecting to see hundreds of dead reindeer lying across a field.

"They were lying there dead in a fairly concentrated area. Reindeer are pack animals and are often close together. During a heavy thunderstorm, they may have gathered even closer together out of fear," NNI spokesman Knut Nylend told Norwegian news outlet NTB, as cited by The Local.

Extreme weather wreaked havoc across parts of the UK yesterday as golf ball sized hail stones rained down and the country was hit by a massive lightning storm.

Emergency crews have spent the day pumping out water from homes after a number of incidents were caused by a massive storm which rolled through the middle of England even taking down a supermarket roof.

Flash floods bringing rainfall of up to 50mm hit parts of the country as a ferocious lightning storm crossed the mid section and headed eastwards in the late afternoon.

The village of Kirkton was deluged in water as golf ball sized hail stones slammed down in the streets of Deeping in Lincolnshire.

They also pelted the ground from morning till afternoon in Oxford.

7.1 magnitude earthquake strikes North of Ascension Island

An earthquake of magnitude 7.1 has struck 975km northwest of Ascension Island in the Atlantic Ocean, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported.

There was no immediate warning of any tsunami triggered by the quake, which was 10km deep, the USGS said.

There were no reports of any damage or casualties.

A massive anvil cumulo-nimbus thunderstorm cloud over Siberia left residents wondering if somebody dropped a nuclear bomb. Residents of Kemerovo in Russia's Western Siberia began posting images on Sunday of what looked like the distinctive hallmark of a nuclear explosion - an isolated ominous mushroom cloud surrounded by otherwise undisturbed blue skies.

The shocking and rare sight of such a massive anvil cumulo-nimbus cloud, formed when a major thunderstorm becomes so powerful that it begins to reach the highest levels of the atmosphere causing the cloud tops to be blown to the side by wind shear, startled many local residents who feared a nuclear blast or an explosion at one of the coal mines in the Kuzbass region.

Other residents however joked about the fearsome sight of the mushroom cloud with one Instagram user, @Kemerovo_insta, joking that there was "a nuclear war today in Chusovitino."

A rare deep-Earth tremor has been detected for the first time on the ocean floor in Japan.

Using seismic equipment, researchers have managed to trace its location to a distant and powerful storm between Greenland and Iceland.

The findings could help experts learn more about the Earth's inner structure and improve the detection of earthquakes and oceanic storms.

The storm that caused the deep-Earth tremor was a 'weather bomb' that struck over the North Atlantic.

This is a small but potent storm in which pressure quickly builds, creating a more vigorous storm.

As the storm hit, groups of waves pounded the ocean floor between Greenland and Iceland.

A Yalobusha County woman is dead after she and her boyfriend were struck by lightning Friday while searching for arrowheads at Grenada Lake.

The Yalobusha County Coroner's Office identifies the victim as 51-year-old Donna Hendrix of Coffeeville.

Sheriff Lance Humphreys told WTVA-TV that the lighting struck Hendrix near the Bryant boat landing, in the southern part of the county.

Hendrix's boyfriend was taken to a hospital. There's no word on his condition.

An autopsy will be performed on Hendrix to determine an official cause of death.

A six-metre humpback whale has been loaded onto a truck after dying when it became stranded in a port in Uruguay.

The huge whale was removed from the water in Montevideo on Friday after being in the throes of death for three days in Buceo port. Inquisitive locals looked on as the carcass was lifted out of the port with the help of a crane and loaded onto a truck.

It will be taken to the Montevideo dump for disposal, provincial emergency services chief Jorge Cuello said.

Health risk

A decomposing whale can be a public health risk and because of a build up of natural gases dead whales can explode. First a postmortem will be carried out to determine why it died. A necropsy allows scientific researchers access to tissues and material that would otherwise be extremely difficult or impossible to obtain.

Three persons, including a woman and her son, were killed and as many were injured when the lightning struck at Ishwariya Park, a picnic spot, here this evening, police said.

A large number of people had gathered at the park, which is on the city outskirts, for picnic this evening when the weather suddenly worsened.

"A lightning struck near gate number 2, where there was a group of six persons. It killed three of them and injured the other three," Pradhyumnagar police stations inspector R Y Raval said.

The deceased were identified as Aarti, her son Bhargav and Ajay.

The day after a massive explosion leveled a Fitchburg house, critically injuring the owner and scattering debris and rubble for half a mile, some nearby residents began returning to their homes Friday, while other dwellings remained uninhabitable.

Representatives from local, state and federal agencies were continuing to investigate the cause of Thursday's explosion. Fitchburg police Lt. Todd Stetzer said the cause would not be known until at least Monday because investigators need to get more information from the owner of the home destroyed in the blast.

Brian Grittner, 57, remained in critical condition Friday at UW Hospital, his mother, Neldine Nichols, said. The retired state IT employee suffered cuts, burns and broken bones, Nichols said.

Grittner's house, at 5573 Cheryl Drive near South Fish Hatchery Road, was the center of the explosion but it had not been determined if the blast occurred inside or outside, Fitchburg Fire Chief Joe Pulvermacher said. At the very least, that house and an adjacent house and duplex would likely have to be bulldozed, he said.
