'Colossus waking up': Sierra Negra volcano eruption triggers evacuations in Ecuador's Galapagos Islands

At least 250 people have been evacuated from the vicinity of the largest volcano in the Galapagos Islands, Sierra Negra, after a series of earthquakes awakened the colossus, according to Ecuadorean authorities.

"The colossus is awakening," Environment Minister Tarsicio Hail said, announcing that Ecuador's authorities are closely watching the seismic and geological activity near one of the world's largest calderas, craters left by previous eruptions.

At least 250 people have already been evacuated from communities in the immediate vicinity of the volcano, and all tourist activity has been temporarily halted in the area, reports El Universo.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has announced that the alert status for Mount Anak Krakatau, located in the regency of South Lampung, is still at the level 'caution'.

Following an eruption, the Volcanic and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center had issued the level 2 alert waspada (caution), on June 18. It is the second of four alert levels.

According to a BMKG statement released on Monday, volcanic smoke resulting from was the mountain's increasing activity was heading south. According to news agency Antara, the BMKG would update the public with any information on significant changes at Mount Anak Krakatau.

The BMKG has also stated that the eruption would not affect flights to and from Radin Inten II Airport in Lampung, nor sea travel, including ferries on the Bakauheni - Merak route.

With the alert, tourists and the public are advised to steer clear of Mount Anak Krakatau and the surrounding area. (wng)

'Biggest fire in living memory': Moorland blaze reignites and rages for days in Saddleworth, UK

Firefighters are continuing to battle a huge moorland fire which is continuing to spread, as more than 50 homes have been evacuated.

The blaze on Saddleworth Moor, which measures 3.7miles (6km), has been raging since Sunday night.

Firefighters are working in "tremendously difficult conditions" to contain the "major incident".

The homes in Carrbrook, near Stalybridge, Greater Manchester, were evacuated on Tuesday night.

Matt Lomas, 76, who was evacuated with his wife, daughter and eight-month-old granddaughter Isla, said: "It was horrendous."

"We could see flames 50 feet high like raging ball of fire all on the hill side.

"It was really scary - we were really worried the smoke would hurt Isla so we had to get out."

Comment: The fire is certainly quite curious because the UK has seen similarly hot temperatures before, and it wasn't long ago that the UK - much of Europe and, actually, the northern hemisphere - was suffering a particularly cold and wet spring. Moreover, the fires resemble those which recently broke out in Scotland: Firefighters battle for second day three large wildfires which broke out in different areas of Scotland's west coast

A farm in Poland witnessed the birth of a mutant two-headed calf.

Local vet Karolina Szarowska was stunned as she described helping with the delivery in the village of Kowalewo Pomorskie.

After the unusual birth, Szarowska shared pictures of the newborn cow with two heads on social media.

She wrote: 'Two heads are better than on. To bring THIS out alive was a true miracle.'

The mother survived the difficult birth and both heads of the male calf had the sucking reflex.

© Angie HuttonPeople near Memphis, Tennessee, thought they spotted a UFO a couple of weeks ago, but meteorologist have determined it to be a “roll cloud”.
Earlier this month, people near Memphis, Tennessee, spotted an odd formation in the sky after a storm.

It was an ominous, cylindrical mass that some likened to a UFO.

The mysterious sight prompted at least one person to snap photos, wondering what this UFO-like image might be.

Colby Hutton saw the mass in the sky over Adamsville, Tennessee, as he was driving over a bridge, his mom Angie Hutton told CBS News.

Angie shared her son's photo on Facebook, hoping someone could help them identify what it was. Local news station WMC-TV looked into the case.

It wasn't an unidentified flying object, and despite it's odd appearance, it has nothing to do with aliens at all.

The Northern Crested Caracara was spotted galavanting around Bella Coola for several weeks

It was thousands of miles from it's home base of the southern United States and Mexico but the Northern Crested Caracara was spotted galavanting around Bella Coola for several weeks earlier this month, delighting local bird watchers who managed to snap dozens of photos of it.

The Crested Caracara looks like a hawk with its sharp beak and talons, behaves like a vulture, and is technically a large tropical black-and-white falcon. It is instantly recognizable standing tall on long yellow-orange legs with a sharp black cap set against a white neck and yellow-orange face.

The Crested Caracara is a bird of open country and reaches only a few states in the southern U.S. It flies low on flat wings, and routinely walks on the ground.

"Intense rain" caused flash floods in three locations across central and western Singapore on Tuesday (Jun 26) morning, leaving vehicles and pedestrians to wade their way through murky waters as they made their way to work during peak hour.

The flash floods occurred in Lorong Kismis, Toh Tuck Avenue and along PIE towards Tuas after the Eng Neo exit, the Public Utilities Board (PUB) said.

The PUB said that Old Toh Tuck Road saw more rain on Tuesday than the entire monthly average for June. Across four hours, 150mm of rainfall was recorded in the area, compared with the average rainfall of 130.7mm in the entire month of June, PUB said.

Here is the panic: 'Utterly Terrifying': 'Study Affirms Feedback Loop Fears as Surging Antarctica Ice Loss Tripled in Last Five Years.' Really?

The Antarctic ice sheet is melting at a faster rate than at any previously recorded time, according to a comprehensive new study. Who can argue with a comprehensive new study? The planet's largest ice sheet is now losing more than 240 billion tons of ice every year ― a threefold increase from less than a decade ago. The melting is happening so fast that it could cause sea levels to rise 6 inches by the end of the century, the study projects. How many times have we heard about catastrophic sea level rises in the last ten years and how many times has the media reported on scientists who say that is a lot of garbage? There is no sea level rise of any significance.

Funny they say this with such panic when it was only recently that NASA and others were reporting on massive increases in ice in Antarctica. In fact, it was only this past January that we read the headlines, 'Huge snowfall increases over Antarctica could counter sea level rise, scientists say.' Scientists have found large increases in snow accumulation in a vast region of eastern Antarctica, a trend that, if it continues or becomes more widespread, could lessen the ice sheet's contribution to sea level rise and mitigate one of the most feared consequences of climate change. The study was conducted by scientists from NASA and several other institutions.

It's a white day in parts of central Newfoundland with some snow accumulating.

It's mixed with rain but parts of the region are pure white and highway workers are reminding drivers to slow down.

The mixture will continue for the better part of the day with temperatures in the low single digits.
