Global cooling: Nearly 8 inches of snow falls at Kitzsteinhorn ski resort in the Austrian Alps in high summer

There's been a big late-June snowfall reported on the Kitzsteinhorn glacier in the Alps near Kaprun and Zell am See in Austria's Salzburgerland region.

The glacier is one of seven currently open for summer skiing and snowboarding in the Alps, but is the only one reporting a big snowfall.

The picture above, published earlier today, was accompanied by a report of 20cm of fresh powder falling for the start of summer.

The Kitzsteinhorn glacier began its 2017-18 ski season around 10 months ago in early autumn last year, and it still plans to stay open another four weeks to July 22nd.

The last record of a sighting in Sri Lanka was 40 years ago in 1978 and for many years, birdwatchers in the country have been on the look-out for it here.

As afternoon was slowly fading into evening, around 5 p.m. on June 6, an Executive in a finance company, Ravi Darshana, was returning home after work in Mannar, through the Vankalai Sanctuary when he saw an interesting sight.

At a water body, just 25 metres from the road, he saw a flock of 250-300 'loitering' shorebirds. This was not the time of year for the sanctuary to hold multitudes of migrant waterbirds, for they had left two months before, most returning home far to the north of Sri Lanka, from where they had flown here to avoid the winter.

Four teenaged boys and a five-year-old girl were killed by lightning in Bokaro on Sunday evening, prompting the district administration to intensify awareness drives and issue advisories to minimise loss of lives.

Sandip Kumar Mahto (15), Laden Sai (15), Tabrez Sai (14) and Farukh Sai (14) died when lightning struck a house at Alkusa village in Siyaljori, around 20km from the Bokaro district headquarters. Manisha Kumari (5) was returning home to Jara village in Petarwar, around 45km away, through a field with her farmer father when the tragedy struck.

Bokaro district disaster management officer Shakti Kumar said compensation worth Rs 4 lakh each would be paid to the families of the deceased after the completion of post-mortem.

With this, total number of bolt deaths in Bokaro rose to 14 since April this year.

Six persons have been injured and 19 bovine animals killed during the same period.

Comment: Other recent fatalities in India due to lightning occurred in the states of Bihar with 9 deaths and Odisha where 2 were killed. Across Bangladesh a total of 6 have died after being struck in the last two days.

In the last decade, areas of northern Wisconsin have experienced several storms with heavy rains that are only projected to occur once in a lifetime, according to precipitation archives from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

An official analysis of the weekend's storms in northern Wisconsin by NOAA confirms that 100 to 1,000-year rainfall events occurred in some areas of the state.

Duluth National Weather Service Meteorologist Joe Moore said that's based on a comparison of three-day totals and NOAA's Atlas 14 records.

"Not everywhere in Wisconsin saw that kind of severity, but definitely parts of northwest Wisconsin, particularly in Douglas and Bayfield Counties," said Moore.

Britain actually having a summer this year is somewhat of a rarity, but the hot weather has brought on another natural phenomenon - a dust devil.

Vicky Chastey filmed the rare whirlwind as she was hay baling with her husband and children in Devon.

Hay was lifted up to 200ft in the air when the field was hit by a mini tornado, leaving her kids shouting 'wow, what is that?'.

Lightning strike kills person on Siesta Key beach, Florida

One person died after they were struck by lightning on a Siesta Key beach, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office.

The person, whose name was not immediately released, was struck at about 2:15 p.m. in the vicinity of the 6000 block of Midnight Pass Road on Siesta Key.

Visiting first-responders and lifeguard performed CPR on the victim until paramedics arrived. The victim was taken to a local hospital, where they were pronounced dead, according to the sheriff's office.

The investigation is continuing.

The government in Myanmar reports that at least 6 people died in landslides and flooding in Hpakant Township (Phakant) in Mohnyin District, Kachin State.

Heavy rains triggered several landslides and caused the Uyu River to overflow its banks on 22 June, 2018.

According to the government report, "The landslides occurred near Pantin Bridge, Maw-wan Ward, beside No. 1 Main road. The landslides hit the staff quarters on the circular road beside the road to MyoU Pagoda, at the back of staff quarters of the Township Development Affairs Committee and in Mawgalon, Sutaung and Phapyin villages."

Local media report that the number of fatalities is 11, with a further 6 people injured and at least 70 houses destroyed.

New huge cracks next to two small fissures technically considered part of fissure 10 up at the corner of Pomaikai and Malama are growing and now steaming. The cracks on these properties run parallel to each other approximately 100 ft wide at their widest point going in the direction straight down rift in the middle of the fissure line.

Ominous storm rages through Barnaul, Siberia - Whole city lost power, several injured
On June 23, a powerful storm hit the Russian city of Barnaul, located in Siberia. The unexpected weather event caused substantial damage and several people were injured.

Footage of a powerful storm in Russia has recently emerged online. Eyewitnesses call the storm "apocalyptic," given its scale and the damage it has inflicted.

And more signs of the changing weather in Russia was a plague of mosquitoes brought about by the record breaking floods and unusual heat.

The short answer, is not all that well.

On June 23, 1988, NASA scientist James E. Hansen testified before the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, where he expressed his "high degree of confidence" in "a cause-and-effect relationship between the claimed CO2 induced "greenhouse effect and observed warming."

The 30th anniversary of Mr. Hansen's predictions affords an opportunity to see how well his forecasts have turned out.

In an article in the Wall Street Journal today, climatologist Dr Patrick Michaels and meteorologist Dr. Ryan Maue compare Hansen's predictions to actual reality over the past 30 years. Instead of the gloom and doom we heard in 1988, we have an earth that is only moderately warmer, and closer to Hansen's "scenario C", the bottom graph below, which is overlaid with actual global temperature data in red.
