Nine killed as landslide buries houses after incessant rainfall in Nepal

One woman and eight children died when a landslide triggered by incessant rainfall buried two houses at Thanti Bazaar in Bheri Municipality-3, Jajarkot, on Sunday morning. A man was injured in the disaster.

A rockslide from some 100 metres above buried the houses belonging to Tirtha Raj Bohara, a member of the Jajarkot chapter of the Federation of Nepali Journalists, and Jit Bahadur Sunar at around 7:30am.

According to the District Police Office (DPO), Bohara's daughter Najita (5), Sital Luhar (25) and her three daughters Bhagawati (9), Ranjana (6) and Manisha (3) were buried to death. Sital, a permanent resident of Bheri Municipality-6, was a tenant at Bohara's house.

Narendra Pariyar (12) of Kushe Rural Municipality-6, Nabin Pariyar (10) of Kushe-6, Gobinda Pariyar (12) and his brother Dasharath Pariyar (5) of Nalgadh Municipality-3 died in the calamity. Two of the children had been staying at a rented room in Sunar's house while the two others stayed in a neighbouring house.

The high hazard College Lake Dam in Lynchburg, Virginia, overtopped Friday morning, sending water barreling across a local road. Evacuations were ordered over fears that the dam could fail. By midday, water levels had receded but more rain forecasted could result in more flooding. If the dam were to completely fail, it would send enough water into the area to reach a depth of 17 feet in seven minutes.

Massive landslides after incessant rain destroy army camp in Arunachal, India

LANDSLIDE
Landslides, owing to incessant rain in the last couple of days, have left a trail of destruction in West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh, while an Army transit camp located at Sessa was totally damaged, official sources today said.

However, there were no reports of any casualty.

The stretch of Bhalukpong-Charduar-Tawang (BCT) Road has been the worst-affected with reports of landslides in several portions of the road, the sources said.

The Kimi-Khupi road has also been badly hit.

A flash flood in a canyon has killed a father, his seven-year-old daughter and three other people on the French island of Corsica.

Rescuers found the body of the fifth victim in the French hiking group - a 22-year-old woman - on Thursday at the remote site near Soccia.

Seven tourists were canyoning with a guide when a wave about 3m (10ft) high hit them, a Corsican prosecutor said. The guide was among those killed.

Two were rescued from the torrent.

A tropical wave interacted with the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) on 1 August, bringing heavy rains to Grenada for more than seven hours, causing landslides, flooded homes and flooded and blocked roadways.

According to the Met Office, the tropical wave was expected to continue until the evening of 2 August.

Damage to houses and agriculture are still being assessed. The National Emergency Advisory Council has declared parishes of St. George and St. David (two parishes out of a total of six) as disaster zones. Nine houses had been damaged in Garraway and the residents have been relocated. Also the national stadium has been damaged and the Ministry of Forestry had to be relocated.

Seasonal floods have killed three people and threaten to submerge parts of Vietnam's capital, officials said Tuesday.

Two children and a man drowned Monday in Chuong My district, a suburb of Hanoi, where water has overflowed one bank of the Bui River and engulfed several villages, the officials said.

On the other side of the river, sandbags have been piled for 10 kilometers (6 miles) to prevent water in a dike from spilling into the inner city of the capital, Hanoi, which has a population of 7.5 million.

At least five people have been killed and over 95,000 people have been forced to flee their homes by widespread flooding in seven states and regions during the past week, the Disaster Management Department said.

It said two people died in the floods in Magwe, and one each in Tanintharyi, Bago and Nay Pyi Taw.

Sagaing and Ayeyarwady regions, and Mon and Kayin states were also hits by flooding, the department said.
