Heavy rains down power lines, leave hundreds stranded in major cities in Sharon region

Residents of Herzliya, Ra'anana and Kfar Saba faced heavy floods Wednesday as a brief but intense winter storm swept the area, closing major roads and flooding whole neighborhoods.

Three days after a storm knocked out power for tens of thousands of Israeli homes, Wednesday's downpour left some 15,000 households in the dark for the second time in less than a week.

Ahead of the storm, police and fire crews raised their alert level and beefed up deployment, while the Israel Electric Company called on the public to report any fallen electrical wires and readied crews in case of electricity outages.

Despite preparations, severe disruptions were reported across the area.

Thunderstorm floods roads, schools in Kuwait; flights suspended

A thunderstorm hit the country early yesterday, leading to the suspension of schools and universities and flooding in some areas and roads. The Interior Ministry cautioned motorists from the possible continuation of the thunderstorm, calling on people in Kuwait to contact the police and fire directorate's emergency teams in case of emergencies.

Officials from Kuwait University and the Ministry of Education released statements regarding the suspension of studies at schools and universities due to the bad weather conditions. The measure also took into consideration the safety of students and teaching staff at educational facilities.

The Kuwait Meteorological Center warned that the weather would remain unstable and cloudy, with moderate to strong southeasterly wind with speeds of 25-50 km/h, causing rising dust and low visibility of less than 1,500 m in some areas and a chance of rain that might be thundery at times.

After days of flooding swamped towns in Texas, authorities in San Antonio got good news Sunday afternoon. A 41-year-old homeless man who was swept away by floodwaters was located more than a day after rushing water swept him away, according to News 4 San Antonio.

Roel Martinez was caught in the raging water when he chased after his dog, officials said, and after several hours, the search was called off due to unsafe conditions, the San Antonio Express-News reported. More than 24 hours later, Martinez was located. He was treated for minor injuries and released from the hospital, News 4 San Antonio added. "You can call it luck, you can call it blessed, you can call it all of those things," San Antonio Fire Department Chief Charles Hood told News 4 San Antonio.


In Louisiana, thousands lost power in Louisiana as a slow-moving storm system compounded by the remnants of Hurricane Patricia continued to bring severe weather and the threat of flooding from Texas east into parts of Louisiana, Mississippi and Arkansas. The National Weather Service in New Orleans reported that an EF0 tornado shifted a mobile home off its foundation Sunday morning near Destrehan, Louisiana, injuring an elderly woman.

However, Texas has seen the worst of the weather so far. Some parts of Houston saw as many as 9 inches of rain this weekend, canceling many outdoor events, including the Houston Half-Marathon and the Gulf Coast International Dragon Boat Regatta.

Deadly flash floods kill 7 in Alexandria, Egypt

At least seven people have died after heavy rain fell in the Egyptian Mediterranean city of Alexandria.

Torrential rain began falling in the early hours of Sunday, and was accompanied by strong winds.

A frontal depression has brought unseasonably unsettled weather to much of the eastern Mediterranean.

The northern portion of the depression brought very heavy rain across Turkey.

Through Thursday and Friday, 246mm of rain fell in Marmaris on the south coast. This is five times as much rain as would normally be expected during the entire month of October.

Remnants of storm fuel heavy rains in south-eastern US, as Houston braces for high water and freight train comes off tracks

Heavy rains fuelled by two storm systems, one of them remnants of hurricane Patricia, have pounded south-eastern Texas, triggering flash floods in Houston and derailing a freight train.

Forecasters predicted 15-30cm (6-12in) of rain for coastal areas of the US, including south-west Louisiana, by Monday morning, exacerbated by tides up to 1.5 metres high (5ft) and wind gusts of up to 35mph (56km/h).

The rain systems were intensified by the remnants of hurricane Patricia, which was downgraded to a tropical depression after crashing into Mexico's west coast.

As the storms moved east early on Sunday, cities in Texas's flood-prone Gulf of Mexico region braced for the impact. They include Houston, the state's second most populous metropolitan area with 6.1 million people.

Canary Islands hit by fierce storms, flash floods, landslides and waterspout

Severe weather warnings have been issued across the Canary Islands this weekend as torrential rain brings chaos and forced the closure of schools.

All schools were closed on Friday as storms hit the archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of west Africa.

Spain's meteorological agency AEMET put the region on amber alert and warned that the eastern most islands of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote were likely to be the worst hit with rain of up to 30 litres per square meter per hour expected.

Those tourists willing to brave the wind and rain and head for the popular resort of Playa del Ingles in Gran Canaria may have spotted an unusual weather phenomenon just off the beach.

A mini bus taking Pakistan's Lowari Pass was caught on camera getting carried away by a flash flood while its 10 passengers fled to safety.

The video, posted to YouTube, shows the mini bus being carried away by rushing waters Lowari Top Dir Upper area amid flash flood Monday.

The bus' 10 passengers can be seen climbing out of the vehicle and rushing to the safety of the shore as the vehicle picks up speed in the water.

The video ends with the bus getting stuck on small but quickly-moving waterfall.

Heavy rain in West Texas on Thursday led to flooding that floated several travel trailers and a double-wide mobile home away from an RV park.

Upton County Sheriff Dan Brown said nobody was in the trailers during the flooding in Rankin, 60 miles south of Odessa. The occupants safely evacuated.

A hailstorm with the same slow-moving system blanketed parts of El Paso on Wednesday. The rain is expected to increase in intensity Friday and Saturday as Hurricane Patricia in the eastern Pacific Ocean makes landfall Friday near Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, and moves north toward Texas.

Odessa Emergency Management said crews there on Thursday conducted about 30 swift-water rescues from stranded vehicles and flooded structures. Forecasters say 3.7 inches of rain soaked Odessa, flooding more than a dozen homes. Midland recorded at least 2.2 inches of rain. Up to 3 inches of rain was reported in the cattle country west of Fort Worth.

Flash floods in Athens kill at least one: Cars swept away following heavy rain

Emergency rescue workers and firefighters were searching parts of northern and western Athens on Thursday night after flash floods in the capital left at least one person dead.

The rescue teams were looking for others who may have been swept away or drowned following fierce rain in the capital. Some 560 people were to remain on duty overnight.

During the day, the fire service received more than 800 calls to help pump water out of basements as a result of the flooding.

A 41-year-old man lost his life in Acharnes, northern Athens, after his car became trapped. Passers-by were able to remove the man and his 71-year-old mother from the vehicle but he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

As of 22 October 2015, The Philippines National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported that over 1 million people have been affected and over 18 000 homes have been fully or partially damaged as a result of Tropical Cyclone Koppu, known locally as Lando. NDRRMC say that 41 people have died. Many of the victims died in flooding, landslides or as a result of storm damage such as fallen trees. Media say the death toll is 54. At least 78 people have been injured, 5 are missing.
