Storm brings record rainfall to Southern California

record rainfall in SoCal
© Inland NewsRecord rain totals fell Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2015 after moisture from former Hurricane Linda brought a storm to SoCal.
After Tuesday's SoCal storm that brought heavy downpour, officials said it was the wettest day of the year.

"That was more rain than was received in nearly the previous seven months," according to a statement by the National Weather Service.

The storm was kicked off by moisture from former Hurricane Linda.

Record rainfall totals hit SoCal including 2.39 inches in downtown LA which shattered the 1968 record, according to the National Weather Service.

Comment: Record rainfall, but still California, a vitally important food producing region, is still experiencing it's worst drought in 500 years. In the event of economic or environmental catastrophe, perhaps we will see 'floods' of desperate migrants there in the near future?

Thailand has declared Chon Buri, which includes the popular tourist resort of Pattaya, a disaster zone after it was hit by flash floods this week.

Torrential rain and gusty winds hit the Thai resort for many hours on Wednesday night and Thursday, causing damage to property and chaos to road users, local media said on Friday (Sep 18).

The heavy downpour was a result of a tropical storm Vamco which caused two-metre-high waves and high winds in the Gulf of Thailand.

Pattaya Mayor Ittipol Khunpluem said the disaster declaration would help accommodate state relief and assistance to the area despite the fact that most of the flooding had subsided, the Bangkok Post reported on Friday.

Flash flood sweeps away two cars full of members from Warren Jeffs' polygamist sect in Utah

Twelve adults and children died after their car was picked up by the flood waters and pushed into a ravine. Three survived and one is still missing
A van and SUV carrying three adults and 13 children sat near the widening stream, waiting for the water to recede so they could cross back to their homes in a small, polygamous town on the Utah-Arizona border.

But in an instant, flood waters engulfed them and the two vehicles were sucked downstream, bobbing in the turbulent water before they tumbled over an embankment. Only three children survived. Twelve of the 16 are dead. One is still missing.

Virginia Black watched in horror from her house as she made a video of the once-in-a-century flash flood.

'There goes the van! Oh my god!' says Black in a high-pitched voice. 'It went over the thing. Oh dear.'

Downstream, people rushed to where the vehicles came to a stop. One witness described a gruesome scene of body parts, twisted metal and a young boy who somehow survived.

'The little boy was standing there,' Yvonne Holm recalled. 'He said, "Are you guys going to help me?"'

Heavy rainfall in central Sweden on Sunday has seen train and road traffic grinding to a halt and over 100 homes evacuated.

Weather agency SMHI issued 13 class-1 warnings for wet and windy weather on Sunday as storms spread eastwards across the country.

Stockholm county was specifically singled out, with the agency noting that it and several nearby counties could expect up to 50 mm of rainfall on Sunday.

The morning saw over 100 homes evacuated in Hallsberg, near Örebro in central Sweden, with emergency services noting that water levels inside some people's houses had reached "around a metre" in depth.
