Clean-up operations were under way in Penang on Monday (Jul 30) after many areas were hit by flash floods.

A four-hour downpour that started at about 1.30am flooded the streets and homes. The situation was made worse by a high tide at 3.30am that prevented water from flowing to the sea, Bernama reported.

Photos circulating online showed cars submerged in water.

Six people from three families had to be rescued from their homes after being trapped by flood waters.

"We immediately helped them out and sent them to the temporary flood relief centre in Masjid Hashim Yahya," said an emergency services spokesperson quoted by the New Straits Times.

Torrential rain floods train station in Sweden - While other parts of country suffer drought and wildfires

Heavy rains across Sweden in the midst of a record-breaking heat wave have turned Uppsala Central Station into a swimming pool. While some commuters struggled to reach firm ground, others turned it into a Nordic Luau.

Water filled the corridors of the Uppsala main railway station following torrential summer rain, disrupting traffic at Sweden's fourth largest city on Sunday. While authorities and emergency services were dealing with the chaos, some locals decided to have some summer fun, splashing around the main escalator which leads into the station.

Wearing full snorkeling gear, local photographer Sarah Thorén snapped and recorded a video of her family swimming under the flooded bridge of the station.

Comment: Something is definitely awry with the weather when parts of the planet are parched by drought then scorched by wildfires only to then be awash with epic flooding:

Landslides after heavy rain in northern Thailand kill 7 - Houses, roads damaged

At least seven villagers were killed and two others missing after heavy rains triggered a mudslide
At least seven villagers were killed and two others missing after heavy rains triggered a mudslide
Landslides in northern Thailand, triggered by days of heavy downpours, killed seven people on Saturday and left one missing, an official said.

All of the victims lived in the mountainous district of Bo Kluea in Nan province, where the landslides have also caused damage to houses and roads, Prasit Dussadeewong, a district security official, told Reuters.

"It's because of nearly two weeks of heavy rains. We've warned people of such landslides but did not expect they would be this big," he said.

Landslides and flooding in Thailand usually occur during the May-November rainy season.

Widespread floods in 2011 killed more than 900 people and caused major disruption to industry and dented economic growth.

Comment: Elsewhere across Asia in the last few days landslides have killed 27 in Myanmar (Burma) and 8 in Nepal.

At least 27 people are feared dead following a landslide at a jade mine in northern Myanmar, police said Wednesday, as heavy rains hampered the search for survivors.

The poorly-regulated and notoriously corrupt multibillion-dollar industry in remote Kachin state is frequently hit by fatal disasters, and the victims often come from poor ethnic communities.

The latest disaster hit remote Set Mu sub-township early Tuesday following heavy rains in the area, burying at least 27 people, mostly from the impoverished ethnic Rawang group, local police officer Aung Zin Kyaw told AFP.

A severe thunderstorm brought nasty weather to some parts of southwestern Alberta on Monday.

A warning was ended for Calgary and Rocky View County — including Canmore, Cochrane, Bragg Creek, Tsuut'ina Reserve and Ghost Lake - but not before the storm brought loonie-sized hail, heavy rain and dangerous wind gusts across the region.

Environment Canada said golf ball-sized hail and damaging wind gusts upwards of 100 km/h were possible in the Calgary area.

The weather agency was advising residents to stay inside as hail and lightning can cause damage and injury.
