Solar minimum madness: Is this Thanksgiving a preview of the bitterly cold winter to come?

This week, three major winter storms will batter most of the country with ice, snow and bitterly cold temperatures just in time for Thanksgiving. It is being projected that 55 million Americans will be traveling this week, and so this bizarre weather comes at a very bad time. But of course we have already seen a series of blizzards roar across the nation in recent weeks and hundreds of record cold temperatures have already been shattered and we are still about a month away from the official start of winter. Normally, it isn't supposed to be this cold or this snowy yet, but we don't live in "normal" times.

Scientists tell us that solar activity becomes very quiet during a "solar minimum", and when solar activity becomes very quiet we tend to have very cold winters. And in recent months solar activity has been very, very low. In fact, we haven't seen any sunspots at all "since November 2"...
We have not seen any sunspots since November 2, and at that time they were only visible for two days, and prior to that no sunspots since October 2.

Still more huge November snowfalls in the Alps - up to 5 feet in 72 hours

It has been another weekend of massive November snowfalls in the Alps, with ski areas reporting up to 1.5 metres (five feet) more snow in the past 72 hours.

The most intensive snowfall was in the Southern Alps, along the French/Italian border, although there was snowfall almost everywhere again, as well as more snow in Bulgaria, the Dolomites, Pyrenees and Scandinavia.

The Italian ski centre of Limone reported nearly 1.5m (five feet) of snow and there was 95cm (just over three feet) for Prato Nevoso - where the pictures used in this report were taken yesterday.

Other areas reporting at least 50cm of fresh snow includes Montgenevre, Sestriere, Sauze d'Oulx, Tignes and Isola 2000 in France and Saas Fee in Switzerland - which already had its full 1800 metres of vertical open with a 9km descent - the biggest in the world to open so far.

The struggle is real for farmers this season

In recent years, through social media you can easily find a hashtag for "struggle is real."

I'm certain no other industry can share in that more than the farmers that continue the 2019 harvest. Last month, I shared about the heavy snow much of our region received. Now we deal with the effects, and all are negative.

Before and after. Prior to the snow, our area of northeast North Dakota was looking at a good edible bean harvest. Pinto beans were averaging anywhere from 2,000 to 3,000 pounds per acre. After the snow, many yields are 1,000 to 1,800 pounds per acre. Soybeans were also doing well before the snow with yields above 40 and some even 50 bushels. After the snow, with many beans lodged from the storm, snowbanks built up, and water/ice ponding kept yields around 30 bushels and some below that.

Canola has also seen significant yield hits after the snow with plants laying flat on the ground now increasing harvest loss and greatly slowing down harvest efficiency. Sunflowers that have had to stay in the field are suffering now from sclerotinia head rot. Yields are 50% of what the potential looked like.

Switzerland busts its all-time November snowfall record set back in 1959

Heavy, early-season snow has buried parts of the mountainous Central European nation of Switzerland, as reported by www.swissinfo.ch — the country's all-time November snowfall record has just been broken, and ski resorts such as Saas Fee and Saas Grund have been completely cut-off.

According to the Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research, the 1,200km-long Alps, which runs directly through Switzerland as well as seven other alpine nations, received "a great deal of snowfall" over the past few days — such as great deal in fact, that Switzerland's all-time November snowfall record was surpassed on the 17th!

By Sunday, Nov 17th, a staggering 71cm (2.33ft) had accumulated in Santa Maria, located in eastern Switzerland, which busted the country's previous November snowfall record — the 69cm (2.26 ft) set back in 1959,also in Santa Maria.

The heavy, early-season snow is still disrupting road and rail transport with several key passes closed for the foreseeable, according to traffic information service Viasuisse.

Access to ski areas such as of Saas Fee and Saas Grund is impossible. While many roads in canton Graubünden, particularly around Davos, Arosa and Silvaplana, are also blocked by monster snow drifts.

Overnight storm drops 10 inches of snow atop Aspen Mountain, Colorado

Opening day got a little sweeter as an overnight snowstorm dropped 10 inches of snow at the top of Aspen Mountain and set the ski area up for top-to-bottom skiing for its opening on Saturday.

Aspen Skiing Co. announced Friday that Aspen Mountain will open with 148 acres and 3,200 vertical feet of skiing. The Silver Queen Gondola, Ajax Express and Bell Mountain chairlifts will operate.

The open trails at Aspen Mountain include Bellissimo, Upper Copper, Deer Park, Dipsy Doodle, Easy Chair, One and Two Leaf, Pumphouse, Silver Bell, Pussyfoot, Silver Dip and Spar Gulch.

Skico announced earlier this week it would open 75 acres of terrain on Aspen Mountain and 60 acres at Snowmass. Initially, there wasn't enough snow on the upper portion of Aspen Mountain for the early opening. The snowmaking system only covers some trails on the lower two-thirds of the ski area. But with 10 inches of snowfall by dawn Friday and more snow falling, Skico was able to prepare more terrain.

Snowmass will still be offering 60 acres for its early opening. The Village Express chairlift will operate to midway, providing access on trails down to Fanny Hill. The Elk Camp Gondola will also serve Elk Camp Meadows beginners' area.

Storms bring snow to Hawaii Island summits

Tuesday's stormy weather produced a brief snowfall at the summits of Mauna Loa and Maunakea. Most of the snow melted within a few hours.

A webcam USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory webcam caught a glimpse of the snow on Mauna Loa's Mokuʻāweoweo Caldera from the northwest rim.

On Maunakea, several observatory webcams recorded the event. A thin layer of snow remains on the summit this morning.

The Flash Flood Watch for Hawaiʻi Island has been discontinued.

We may only be approaching Thanksgiving, but it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas at the Grand Canyon.

Snow blanketed the famed Arizona, national park on Thursday. The official Twitter account for the site warned visitors to expect icy roads.

"An overcast morning on the South Rim, after receiving around 3 inches of snow last night. Caution park roads and footpaths are icy," @GrandCanyonNPS tweeted along with a photo of a view from early Thursday. "There is a possibility of additional snow throughout the day."

The BIG FREEZE is upon us.

The volatility in weather that our computer has been forecasting on a long-term basis should result in this winter being colder than the last. In Britain, the snow has hit an already flood-ravaged country as temperatures plunged to -7C. This is part of the problem we face. The ground freezes down and this prevents winter crops.

During the late 1700s, the ground froze to a depth of 2 feet according to John Adams. When John Adams set out to travel to Philadelphia, it was bitterly cold and there was a foot or more of snow that covered the landscape that had blanketed Massachusetts from one end of the province to the other. Beneath the snow, after weeks of severe cold, the ground was frozen solid to a depth of two feet. Packed ice in the road made the journey very hazardous.

Despite late-season gains, millions of acres of Saskatchewan crops will remain under snow until spring as the worst harvest in years comes to a close.

The year's final crop report, released Thursday, shows 93 per cent of crops combined. That's up from 90 per cent on Oct. 28 but well below averages in previous years, where up to 99 per cent of crops were completely harvested by the end of October. Of the province's canola — a valuable cash crop — nine per cent is unharvested.

"Most farmers we're speaking to are holding off until spring," crops extension specialist Cory Jacob said in an interview with Postmedia last week.

Crops that were harvested are almost all of below-average quality, which Jacob said was the culmination of a year of bad weather that began with a spring too dry for germinating followed by a winter too wet and snowy for harvesting.
