'Failing upward on steroids': Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer is nominated for TIME's 'Person of the Year' leaving critics in uproar

Michigan's Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer is under consideration for TIME magazine's famous annual 'Person of the Year' title, a turn of events which has utterly dismayed critics of her record of governance.

On the nominee list, published on Wednesday, Whitmer is featured alongside some fellow Democrats, like House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and Republicans, including President Donald Trump.

Besides politicians, the nominees include singer Billie Eilish, rapper and ex-presidential hopeful Kanye West, Pope Francis and Prince Harry of the British royal family. While readers do get to vote on who they think should win the title, it's the magazine's editors who will make the final decision and announce it, on December 10.

Whitmer's appearance on the list of nominees considered for the title has rubbed quite a few critics the wrong way and they were not shy about taking to social media to list the governor's perceived misdeeds.

Many were instantly reminded of Michigan's perhaps most infamous and ongoing crisis: the lead-poisoning of water in the city of Flint, which began in 2014. While Whitmer entered office last year on promises to address the serious health issue, some on Twitter were eager to point out that "Flint still doesn't have clean water."

"This is failing upward on steroids," tweeted journalist Jordan Chariton.

Comment: All is not so rosy in Michigan where legislators are gathering to oust Whitmer and public sentiment towards her is overwhelmingly reactive and sour. Why is TIME on her side?

Massive crowds gathered in central London on Saturday to protest lockdown measures designed to combat the Covid-19 pandemic, and police followed through on their promise to arrest demonstrators, leading to multiple clashes.

Ahead of the protest, Metropolitan Police released a statement warning anyone planning to travel to King's Cross that current lockdown measures do not permit massive crowds.


Comment: The tyrannical new rules actually state no more than TWO people may protest.


"Ahead of a planned protest on Saturday, 28 November, the Met is urgently reminding those looking to attend that protest is not currently a permitted exemption to the prohibition on gatherings under the current Coronavirus regulations," they said.

Judge: Republicans will likely win Pennsylvania election lawsuit

The judge who ordered Pennsylvania to not certify the results of the 2020 election wrote in an opinion on Friday that the Republicans who filed the related lawsuit will likely win the case.

Pennsylvania Commonwealth Judge Patricia McCullough made the assessment as part of an opinion explaining her rationale for blocking Pennsylvania's election certification.

A group of Republican lawmakers and candidates sued the Keystone State earlier this week, arguing that the state legislature's mail-in voting law — Act 77 — violated the commonwealth's constitution.

"Petitioners appear to have established a likelihood to succeed on the merits because petitioners have asserted the Constitution does not provide a mechanism for the legislature to allow for expansion of absentee voting without a constitutional amendment," McCullough wrote.


When ruling on an emergency injunction, judges have to consider whether the party which requested the injunction is likely to win the case or "succeed on the merits." McCullough opined that the "petitioners appear to have a viable claim that the mail-in ballot procedures set forth in Act 77 contravene" the plain language of the provision of the Pennsylvania Constitution which deals with absentee voting.

Comment: More on the PA GOP's memo resolution challenging the 2020 results:
The proposed text lists three steps taken by the judicial and executive branches to change the rule of the election.

First, on Sept. 17, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court "unlawfully and unilaterally" extended the deadline by which mail ballots could be received, mandated that ballots without a postmark would be treated as timely, and allowed for ballots without a verified voted signature to be accepted, the resolution says.

Second, on Oct. 23, upon a petition from the secretary of the commonwealth, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled that signatures on mail-in ballots need not be authenticated.

And third, on Nov. 2, the secretary of the commonwealth "encouraged certain counties to notify party and candidate representatives of mail-in voters whose ballots contained defects," the resolution says.

All of the changes are contrary to the Pennsylvania Election Code, which requires mail-in ballots to be received at 8 p.m. on Election Day, mandates that signatures on the mail-in ballots be authenticated, and forbids the counting of defective mail-in ballots.

The resolution also lists a variety of election irregularities and potential fraud, including the issues brought up by witnesses during the hearing before the Pennsylvania Senate Majority Policy Committee on Nov. 25.

"On November 24, 2020, the Secretary of the Commonwealth unilaterally and prematurely certified results of the November 3, 2020 election regarding presidential electors despite ongoing litigation," the resolution states.

"The Pennsylvania House of Representatives has the duty to ensure that no citizen of this Commonwealth is disenfranchised, to insist that all elections are conducted according to the law, and to satisfy the general public that every legal vote is counted accurately."

Pennsylvania State Sen. Doug Mastriano, a Republican, said Friday that the GOP-controlled state legislature will make a bid to reclaim its power to appoint the state's electors to the Electoral College, saying they could start the process on Nov. 30.
In other words, they were always planning on cheating.

Rioters in Oregon's largest city on Thanksgiving caused thousands of dollars in damage, authorities said.

A group of people dressed in black clothing were witnessed smashing windows along Hawthorne Street in the early hours of Nov. 26, according to the Portland Police Bureau.

Officers canvassed the area and found that damage had been inflicted upon at least 10 businesses in the area.

Weld County's defiance came days before news broke that New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is "furious" because a Brooklyn synagogue held a secret wedding.

Colorado officials last week announced that several counties had moved into the "red level" — the second-highest measurement on its COVID-19 dial — and would be forced to implement new regulations on restaurants, gyms, and other parts of the economy to combat the virus.

Then something remarkable happened. Weld County, a county in the northern part of the state with a population of roughly a quarter million people, politely said no.

"Instead, county government continues to do what it has done since March, which is promote and encourage residents and business owners to take individual responsibility and make decisions to protect themselves, their families, their community and their businesses," the Board of Commissioners said in a statement.

With a test-positivity rate north of 16 percent, Weld County's infection rate is well above the 5 percent threshold the World Health Organization uses as a benchmark for taking proactive measures to limit the spread of the virus. Nevertheless, county officials enumerated what they would not do.

Health officials in Los Angeles County have declared a new "safer-at-home" order, clamping down its Covid-19 restrictions to ban most gatherings for a three-week period, but created exemptions for religious services and protests.

The new directive, which will take effect next week and stay in force until December 20, will prohibit all public and private gatherings involving people from different households and impose further occupancy limits on businesses, the county health department announced on Friday.
Residents are advised to stay home as much as possible and always wear a face covering over their nose and mouth when they are outside their household and around others.

Kanye West won't be appearing on the presidential ballot for his home state after election officials in Illinois found that 1,900 of the 3,128 signatures West submitted are invalid.

That leaves the rapper short of the 2,500 needed to be included on the state's Presidential ballot.

While no reason was given, issues could be fake names or addresses, voters who were not eligible in Illinois, illegible signatures or something else entirely, TMZ notes.

The signatures were brought to the attention of the Illinois State Board of Elections after three people filed objections citing dodgy signatures, the site reported.

West reportedly dropped $30,000 to be included on the ballot.

Meanwhile Wisconsin is looking into West's presidential bid in that state after Democratic party members found signatures for "Mickey Mouse" and Bernie Sanders on that state's ballot.

"If the affidavits are true ... crimes were committed by the West campaign," attorney Michael Maistelman, who gathered the affidavits for the state Democratic Party, told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

An analysis of Nevada votes has uncovered an unprecedented jump in problem voter registrations, likely providing the Trump campaign with another avenue to challenge Joe Biden's victory in the critical state.

In an affidavit filed in another Republican election challenge, a "data scientist" found a huge surge of incomplete voter registrations and those giving casinos and temporary RV parks as "their home or mailing addresses" in the Third Congressional District that covers the southern third of the state and much of Clark County.


Comment: Matt Braynard's team found similar illegal registrations in Pennsylvania and Georgia, not to mention the bogus "indefinitely confined" absentee ballot voters in Wisconsin.


The expert, Dorothy Morgan, said that in her initial study of the records of those who voted, there was an "historically strange" jump in voter registrations missing the sex and age of the voter, making confirmation by poll workers impossible.

She found that in the last presidential election, there were 68 voter registrations missing the critical data. In 2020, it was 13,372.

What's more, 74% of the incomplete registrations took place between July and September this year.

Outgoing Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard has urged President Donald Trump to issue pardons for Edward Snowden and Julian Assange, echoing growing calls to absolve whistleblowers who helped to "expose" the US "deep state."

"Since you're giving pardons to people, please consider pardoning those who, at great personal sacrifice, exposed the deception and criminality of those in the deep state," Gabbard said in a tweet addressed to the president on Thursday, referring to Snowden and Assange.

Vermont Gov. Phil Scott is giving schools the green light to interrogate students about their Thanksgiving activities following the break.

According to Scott, students or parents who admit to violating the state's holiday travel and gathering rules will be forced to participate in online school for two weeks, he announced via Twitter on Tuesday. The penalty will be reduced to one week if the students in question take a COVID-19 test.
The same quarantine method, Scott claimed, should apply to businesses whose employees decided to celebrate the Thanksgiving holidays with friends and family.
