NATO posts bizarre propaganda video and almost gets ratioed

nato summit madrid 2022
The NATO summit in Madrid, Spain, June 29, 2022
NATO is a military alliance that was established in 1949 to guard Western Europe against a Soviet invasion.

Along with the U.S. and Canada, most European countries are members - the exceptions being Ireland, Switzerland, Austria, Serbia, Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, Finland and Sweden. Shortly after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the latter two countries applied for membership, and are currently awaiting Turkey's permission to join.

Most commentators, including myself, would argue that NATO played a vital role in deterring Soviet aggression during the Cold War. (For those who are interested, I wrote a short paper on this.) Today, however, the organisation's purpose is less clear, and some people say it should have been disbanded after the fall of communism.

Indeed, NATO has been the subject of intense debate since the outbreak of the war in the Donbas in 2014, and even more so since Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Senate votes overwhelmingly to let Sweden and Finland join NATO

The Senate voted 95-1 on Wednesday to ratify NATO membership for Finland and Sweden, with overwhelming bipartisan support expected for quickly expanding the Western military alliance in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The sole no vote was Republican Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri. Fellow Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky voted present.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who visited Kyiv and the region earlier this year, had urged a unanimous show of approval. Speaking from the Senate floor, McConnell cited the two Nordic nations' well-funded, modernizing militaries and their experience working with U.S. forces and weapons systems, calling it a "slam-dunk for national security" of the United States.

"Their accession will make NATO stronger and America more secure. If any senator is looking for a defensible excuse to vote no, I wish them good luck," the Senate Republican leader said.

China scraps high-level meeting with Japan

Beijing has canceled an upcoming meeting between the Chinese and Japanese foreign ministers, over a statement on Taiwan made by the G7 group, the Chinese foreign ministry announced on Thursday.

The talks between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his Japanese counterpart Yoshimasa Hayashi, which were planned to be held on the sidelines of the ongoing ASEAN events in Cambodia, won't be taking place, the ministry's spokeswoman Hua Chunying said during a briefing.

According to Ha, Beijing has been "strongly displeased" by the joint statement of the G7 group, which includes Japan, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, the UK and the US, on the events around the visit of US House speaker Nancy Pelosi to the self-governed island of Taiwan.

Tokyo has no right to make "irresponsible remarks" on the Taiwan issue, the spokeswoman insisted.

In their statement on Wednesday, the foreign ministers of the G7 nations denounced China for launching a series of military exercises and live-fire drills in six maritime areas around the island in response to Pelosi's trip.

US 'artificially' stokes tensions - Kremlin

Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi instigated the flare-up of tensions around Taiwan with her trip to Taipei, the Kremlin has said.

"The tensions around Taiwan were artificially provoked. We are well aware that they were provoked by the visit of Nancy Pelosi," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Thursday.

"It was a completely unnecessary trip," Peskov said, adding that the snap military drill launched by Beijing near Taiwan was "the sovereign right of China."

China brands US and Taiwan 'destroyers of peace'

The leadership in Taipei and the US are responsible for creating conflict between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait, Ma Xiaoguang, spokesperson for the Taiwan affairs office of China's State Council, has insisted.

Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), "relying on external support, willingly took on the role of pawns and stepped up provocations in the quest for independence," Ma said on Tuesday, referring to the visit by the US House speaker Nancy Pelosi to the self-governed island, which Beijing views as part of its territory.

"The US intensified their efforts to try to play the Taiwan card, continuously added fuel to the fire, making plans to contain China through Taiwan," the spokesman pointed out.

Comment: Journalist John Pilger was warning about the US schemes to contain China back in 2016, and discussions between US officials reveal that, going even further back, they've been preparing for the rise of Russia and China, and the threat they pose against their plans for world domination.

Jeremy Redfern, press secretary for the Florida Department of Health, criticized the Florida chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics for supporting sex-reassignment surgeries and puberty blockers as methods of treatment for minors dealing with gender dysphoria.

Redfern Tweeted email screenshots from the Florida AAP urging people to support "gender-affirming care" as the Florida Board of Medicine plans to consider a proposal Friday to prohibit physicians from providing treatments such as hormone therapy, puberty blockers, and sex-reassignment surgeries to youth.

"Dr. Lisa Gwynn and the FCAAP support double mastectomies on 14 year old girls with gender dysphoria. Notice how she never calls it what it is," Redfern said. "This is eminence-based ideology. It's not evidence-based medicine. Regardless of what she claims."

Backlash on social media forced Nicola Sturgeon to remove a post about "eliminated" Russian soldiers.

Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has deleted her tweet about "eliminated" Russian soldiers in Ukraine after accusations of "glorifying war".

On Tuesday, Sturgeon retweeted a Ukrainian Defense Ministry post. It claimed that the "total combat losses of the enemy" included "41,170 of eliminated personnel."

Comment: You can't believe anything you hear in the Western press about Russian troop losses anyway, so the tweet really achieved nothing but shooting oneself in the foot. Utter fail.

China may avenge Pelosi's visit - just not how we might think

pelosi taiwan

Here's why Nancy Pelosi's visit is such a big deal in Beijing - and how Chinese officials might respond.

US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made an unannounced but heavily anticipated landing in Taiwan on Tuesday, plunging US-China relations to a new low. Despite warnings from other top Washington officials, Pelosi has now become the highest-ranking US official to visit the island in 25 years - but the situation is far different now than it was then.

First, it should be recognized how consequential this decision is. For the US, it's not that big of a deal. Congressional delegations, not just from the US but many Western countries, go to Taiwan frequently. It's also seen as separate from official US government policy because the legislative branch of government is separate from the executive, which is tasked with managing foreign policy.

Russia FM Lavrov rips Pelosi: Created dangerous China flashpoint 'out of thin air'

The senior US official may have been trying to prove she can get away with anything, Russia's foreign minister said

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has condemned US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's trip to Taiwan, branding it a display of American disregard for international norms.

"It was the drive to prove to everyone their impunity and to act accordingly. 'I do whatever I want', something like that," the minister told journalists on Wednesday. "I can hardly imagine any other reason to create a flashpoint out of thin air, despite knowing what it would mean for China."

Nancy Pelosi, Taiwan and yet another fake binary

Why do we continue to partake of the geopolitical pantomime?

Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan yesterday. It was quite an event. People were asking "is this brinksmanship dangerous?", or "Will the Chinese shoot down Pelosi's plane?"

Protesters took to the streets of Taipei, the Chinese military is holding live-fire drills in the South China sea.

...and then Pelosi left, and nothing has actually happened, has it?

Taiwan is just another fake binary. At the press conferences and photo-ops, everyone was wearing masks.

In Beijing and Washington, they are still pushing vaccine passes and vaccine mandates and vaccine boosters.

They are still talking about Covid and Climate Change and central bank digital currencies.
