Some 1,000 people were stranded without heat or power in a small Arizona town near the Grand Canyon on Friday during a major winter storm that threatened to disrupt travel for millions as it moves east one day after the Thanksgiving holiday.

The Town Council of Tusayan, just south of Grand Canyon National Park, declared a state of emergency early on Friday morning, citing the power outage and nearly two feet (60 cm) of snow that has made roads impassable.

"We are working to arrange emergency shelter at the National Park, in buses, and at other locations," said Mayor Craig Sanderson said in a written statement.


Comment: According to the website Current Results (weather and science facts) the average total snowfall in November for Grand Canyon Village is 4.7 inches over 1.9 days - so this latest storm has produced roughly 5 times more snow than would normally be expected in the area for the entire month (and apparently in just a single day).

Wintry weather bedeviled Thanksgiving weekend travelers across the United States Saturday as a powerful and dangerous storm moved eastward, dumping heavy snow from parts of California to the northern Midwest and inundating other areas with rain.

One storm-related death was reported in South Dakota, and three children were missing in central Arizona after a vehicle was swept away while attempting to cross a runoff-swollen creek.

The National Weather Service said the storm was expected to drop 15-30 centimeters of snow from the northern Plains states into Minnesota, Wisconsin and Upper Michigan.

Blizzard conditions early Saturday were already buffeting the High Plains. The city of Duluth, Minnesota, issued a "no travel advisory" beginning at noon Saturday because of a major snow storm it termed "historic."

Flooding in Terengganu State in eastern Peninsular Malaysia has displaced over 2,000 people according to disaster agencies.

Floods hit the area after heavy rainfall from 27 November. Parts of Besut District recorded as much as 400mm of rain in 24 hours on 29 November. The Besut river in the district exceeded danger levels on 29 November, standing at 35.20 metres (danger mark is 35m) near Keruak. The Dungun in Kuala Jengai was also above the danger mark (21 metres), standing at 22.45 metres as of 30 November, 2019.

A total of 2,296 people from 648 families have been evacuated to relief centres in the districts of Besut (1,148 people), Setiu (553), Hulu Terengganu (112) and Dungun (483).

They are being given temporary shelter at 40 flood relief centres which have been opened in four districts, with 21 of the centres in Besut.

The weather in Dalmatia at this time of year can be pretty all over the place. From warm sunny days that require the removal of jackets and the placement of sunglasses in the middle of November to extreme winds like jugo and bura blowing tables and chairs down the streets. All this can happen in just one day. While this is irritating for residents and tourists alike, it makes for some amazing photos and videos.

Mazatlán hit hard with extensive flooding after 91mm of rain

Heavy rains from Cold Front No. 18 have killed one person and flooded dozens of communities in Chihuahua, Sinaloa, Sonora and Baja California.

The death occurred in the municipality of Guadalupe y Calvo, Chihuahua, when a woman was swept away by the current while attempting to cross a flooded stream on Thursday.

Floods, overflowing rivers and landslides forced the evacuation of 150 people in the municipalities of Batopilas, Chínipas and Urique, triggering a request by Chihuahua Civil Protection for an emergency declaration to obtain federal resources.

As gusting winds thrashed Anchorage and the surrounding areas overnight Wednesday into Thursday, snow was piling up in the Susitna Valley.

The Susitna Valley got around 1 to 3 feet of snow through midday Thursday, with the heaviest snowfall north of Talkeetna. Most of the precipitation along the Parks Highway corridor north of Willow, up to Broad Pass, was expected to shift to the west Thursday evening — but not before another 6 to 12 inches would fall, according to Shaun Baines, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Anchorage.

"And then overnight tonight, that snow is going to sit mostly over the western Susitna Valley," Baines said.

Hatcher Pass got around 4 feet of snow, according to a rough estimate by the weather service Thursday afternoon. In its morning avalanche forecast, the Hatcher Pass Avalanche Center said the avalanche hazard could rise from considerable to high Thursday amid continuing strong winds and heavy snow.

Most of the action has swung to the US this week with big snowfalls in the Sierras and the Rockies and a lot more to come. The snow doesn't want to let up in Europe with more on the way this weekend while consistent snow looks likely next week for Hokkaido. There's also a chance Whistler could see its first real winter storm next week.

The last two weeks of November have turned on plenty of snow with some great powder turns in the open resorts in Colorado last weekend followed by more snow on Tuesday. The southern Rockies did best with Telluride reporting 25cms and there is more on the way, southern Colorado in line for 30 to 60cms over the next 24 hours. However, the big snow news is California where the Sierra's are getting hammered, the Tahoe resorts receiving 30 to 90cms and the snow level was low with up to 50cms at lake level. Further south, Mammoth Mountain also saw big totals with 90cms over 48 hours.

Ready to hit the slopes?

China Peak Resort will open for the season this Friday after receiving four feet of new snow in 38 hours.

Resort officials say they anticipate they will be open Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

They say anywhere from 48" of snow has fallen at the resort and believe that number will rise through the holiday weekend.

If you plan on heading up to ski make sure you pack tire chains and are prepared for changing weather conditions.
