Falling fertility rates to trigger 'major shifts' in economic power, research predicts

  • The analysis says that improvements in access to modern contraception and the education of girls and women could underpin "widespread" and "sustained" declines in global fertility.
  • It means that, in the absence of liberal immigration policies, 183 of 195 countries on the planet will not be able to maintain current populations by the end of the century.
  • Professor Ibrahim Abubakar of University College London, who was not involved in the research, said if the findings of the study were "even half accurate" then migration would become "a necessity for all nations and not an option."

Declining fertility rates will likely mean almost every country has shrinking populations by the end of the century, according to a new study, triggering "major shifts" in global economic power.

A new report in the peer-reviewed medical journal The Lancet, published Tuesday, expects the global population to peak at 9.7 billion by the year 2064, with the number of people across the globe forecast to fall back to 8.8 billion by 2100.

Comment: How far can we trust these models in a unpredictable fast changing world?

The 5-4 ruling says that federal executions may proceed. The last time an execution occurred at federal level was in 2003.

The Supreme Court early Tuesday ruled that the first federal executions in 17 years can be carried out.

The justices ruled 5-4 hours after a U.S. District Judge preliminary blocked four inmates from being executed.

Daniel Lewis Lee was originally scheduled to receive a lethal dose of the powerful sedative pentobarbital at 4 p.m. ET Monday, but a federal judge's order prevented his execution.

Museum curator resigns after he is accused of racism for saying he would still collect art from white men

Until last week, Gary Garrels was senior curator of painting and sculpture at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA). He resigned his position after museum employees circulated a petition that accused him of racism and demanded his immediate ouster.

"Gary's removal from SFMOMA is non-negotiable," read the petition. "Considering his lengthy tenure at this institution, we ask just how long have his toxic white supremacist beliefs regarding race and equity directed his position curating the content of the museum?"

This accusation — that Garrels' choices as an art curator are guided by white supremacist beliefs — is a very serious one. Unsurprisingly, it does not stand up to even minimal scrutiny.

In a blistering resignation letter, the columnist with history of anti-Palestinian activism says she was bullied by 'progressive' colleagues at the
New York Times.

The resignation of pro-Israel columnist Bari Weiss from the New York Times has fuelled an already raging debate in the United States about "cancel culture" and the changing media landscape where social media has given readers a platform to air their grievances against public figures, including journalists.

Early on Tuesday, Weiss announced that she was quitting the Times citing a "hostile work environment" and lack of tolerance towards "centrist" voices such as herself by what she portrayed as a "progressive" orthodoxy that now controls whom and what gets published at the newspaper.

Judge denies bail for Ghislaine Maxwell after she pleads not guilty in Jeffrey Epstein sex crimes case

Ghislaine Maxwell
© Jane Rosenberg | ReutersGhislaine Maxwell appears via video link during her arraignment hearing where she was denied bail for her role aiding Jeffrey Epstein to recruit and eventually abuse of minor girls, in Manhattan Federal Court, in the Manhattan borough of New York City, New York, U.S. July 14, 2020 in this courtroom sketch.
A federal judge on Tuesday denied bail for Ghislaine Maxwell, the British socialite accused of facilitating the sexual abuse of young girls in the mid-1990s by her former boyfriend Jeffrey Epstein, the now-dead investor.

Maxwell, who will remain in jail pending trial, pleaded not guilty at the bail hearing in Manhattan federal court, where her lawyer had sought her release on a $5 million bond.

Maxwell poses "a substantial risk of flight," said Judge Alison Nathan.

"The risk is simply too great" for Maxwell to be released on bail, Nathan said.

The judge noted Maxwell's wealth, her citizenship in Britain and France, other international ties, and her lack of strong family or business connections in the United States, as she denied the bail request.

Nathan also cited the "seriousness" of Maxwell's alleged crimes as a reason she would have to flee and said no bail condition, or combination of conditions, would ensure she would willingly appear in court on the charges.

Maxwell, 58, faces up to 35 years in prison if convicted of crimes that include enticing minors into traveling to have sex with Epstein, and perjury.

Idris Elba says racist films and TV shows should come with a warning - not be pulled

The Luther star told the Radio Times magazine a ratings system should be in place to alert viewers of racist viewpoints in shows.

Luther star Idris Elba has advocated for a ratings system that warns viewers of a film or show with outdated or offensive viewpoints.

Speaking to the Radio Times magazine for this week's issue, the Emmy-winning actor spoke about the removal of shows which contain offensive jokes from streaming platforms.

Comment: It's admirable that he's trying to make a compromise, but his idea still amounts to having someone telling people how they should feel about the content they're about to watch. If we don't find an episode of Golden Girls that features the cast wearing mud masks to be racist, do we need an SJW ratings body telling us we should?

Google faces $5 BILLION lawsuit over tracking users' activities even in 'private' mode

Google and its parent company Alphabet Inc have been accused of pervasively - and illegally - tracking the activities of millions of people even when they turn tracking off in a lawsuit demanding $5 billion in damages.

Filed with a US district court in San Jose on Tuesday, the complaint states that Google has violated the American federal wiretap law and the California privacy law by collecting information about what people look at in the news, search for online or do in their mobile apps - even when they turn off tracking in their account settings or switch browsers to private mode.

The lawsuit filed by Boies Schiller Flexner, a law firm representing several individual consumers acting "on behalf of all other similarly situated," alleges that the data collection is facilitated through Google's Firebase - software used for storing app data and sending notifications and ads - which operates invisibly to the app users. It is the second complaint brought by the firm since June, with the first similarly accusing Google of dire privacy violations, even when users turned on private browsing settings.

Anti-Trump Lincoln Project co-founder says past tweets shouldn't define him, then cans employee for offensive messages a day later

The Lincoln Project, an anti-Donald Trump organization founded by Republicans, has fired its video editor Ben Howe for years-old tweets using female anatomy as an insult - despite one of its co-founders engaging in similar antics.

"Based on these unacceptable and offensive posts, and those that came to light last week, Ben Howe is no longer affiliated with the Lincoln Project, effective immediately," Keith Edwards, a spokesman for the group, said in a statement on Tuesday.

The tweets in question were emailed to the organization by the 19th News, a non-profit media outlet, and had been highlighted by other groups within the last week.

The old posts included some by Howe, who previously worked for conservative blog RedState, calling critics a "tw*t" or "vagina" - and sometimes using more offensive language.

"I want to be a feminist but every time I call someone a c**t I get yelled at," another tweet from 2018 read.

'He's gone full black supremacist': Actor Nick Cannon blasted for saying white people are a 'little less' and 'closer to animals'

TV host Nick Cannon is facing accusations of antisemitism and racism following a bizarre and now-viral interview in which he claims white people are "a little less" and black people are who Jewish people "want to be."

During the discussion with former Public Enemy member Richard Griffin (who left the group after saying the "Jews are wicked" in a 1989 interview), Cannon, who hosts the 'Masked Singer,' claimed it is impossible for him to be antisemitic.

"It's never hate speech, you can't be anti-Semitic when we are the Semitic people," he said. "When we are the same people who they want to be. That's our birthright." He later insisted again that he is not promoting "hate speech."

Marxist BLM protest leader calls for black militia, revolution

"The police is no different from the KKK".

The true face of the organised Black Lives Matter movement reared its head during a protest in London this past weekend, as a protest leader called for an end to capitalism, and the creation of a "black militia" to foment a revolution.

In video obtained by Breitbart News, protesters are seen in marxist paramilitary garb, complete with berets, with the ringleader barking proclamations about how racism "thrives on capitalism".

Amid chants of "take it to the streets... fuck the police" and "no justice, no peace", the activist claimed that "The police is no different from the KKK. They stand around and protect statues and buildings instead of people."

In a further bizarre declaration the woman also decreed that "They need to join the local council and litter pick too."
