Snitch nation: Yelp debuts new feature allowing users to report businesses' mask & social distancing violations

Yelp is giving users another way to scold local businesses from a place of moral superiority, launching a feedback feature to reflect how well a business is enforcing social distancing, face coverings, and other Covid-19 rules.

The user-generated review site debuted the new feature on Tuesday, along with a mockup of how listings will look going forward. Under "Covid-19 updates," in addition to informing users whether a business offers delivery or sit-down dining, user evaluations based on how well the establishment adheres to social distancing and mask regulations will appear.

It's not clear whether businesses will have the option of contesting bad marks, a major threat to establishments already hanging by an economic thread due to pandemic-related shutdowns, but the app claims it has safeguards in place to protect businesses from malicious review-spamming, having "implemented advanced technology to mitigate potential misuse of the feature."

Are you ready for total (ideological) war?

So, welcome to 2021! If last week was any indication, it is going to be quite an exciting year. It is going to be the year in which GloboCap reminds everyone who is actually in charge and restores "normality" throughout the world, or at least attempts to restore "normality," or the "New Normality," or the "Great Normal Reset," or "The New Normal War on Domestic Terror" ... or whatever they eventually decide to call it.

In any event, whatever they call it, GloboCap is done playing grab-ass. They have had it with all this "populism" malarkey that has been going on for the last four years. Yes, that's right, the party is over, you Russian-backed white supremacist terrorists! You Trump-loving, anti-mask grandmother killers! You anti-vax, election-fraud-conspiracy theorists! You deviants who refuse to follow orders, wear your damn masks, vote for who they tell you, and believe whatever completely nonsensical official propaganda they pour into your heads!

Oh, yes, you really did it this time! You stormed the goddamned US Capitol. You and your racist, Russia-backed army of bison-hat wearing half-naked actors have meddled with the primal forces of GloboCap, and now, by God, you will atone! No, do not try to minimize your crimes. You entered a building without permission! The building where America simulates democracy! You walked around in there waving silly flags! You went into the Chamber, into people's offices! One of you actually put his filthy populist feet up on Pelosi's desk ... ON HER DESK! This aggression will not stand!

Organizers are reportedly planning armed protests slated to occur at 50 state capitols, as well as the U.S Capitol, in the days leading up to Inauguration Day, according to an internal FBI bulletin obtained by ABC News.

"Armed protests are being planned at all 50 state capitols from 16 January through at least 20 January, and at the US Capitol from 17 January through 20 January," the bulletin read, according to ABC's Aaron Katersky, who added that a group is "calling for 'storming' state, local, and federal government courthouses and administrative buildings in the event President Trump is removed prior to Inauguration Day."

According to the bulletin, the FBI has "received information about an identified armed group intending to travel to Washington, DC on 16 January." The group, per the bulletin, has reportedly warned that a "huge uprising" will occur if Congress attempts to remove President Trump through the 25th Amendment.

Parler finds refuge with right-leaning webhosting service

A handful of Big Tech companies moved to take down social media platform Parler over the weekend, but it appears to have found a new company to help try to keep its website running.

On Monday, Parler registered its domain and server to be hosted by Epik, an internet webhosting company known for working with right-leaning websites. Gab, another social media platform popular with conservatives, also uses Epik. A web domain search shows that Parler is now registered with Epik.

Epik put out a statement on Monday claiming it had no discussion of providing future services to Parler. Epik did acknowledge, however, that Parler was "working on satisfying the requested terms placed upon them."

Epik also defended Parler and said that it was being unfairly treated in comparison to its larger competitors Twitter and Facebook, which create an "undeniable double standard" when it comes to their policing and enforcement of content.

Comment: Dorsey thinks removal of Parler from Apple App Store is his private joke by replacing it with Signal:

Shooting the Capitol rioter saved black lawmakers from lynching, claims Congressman (who also feared 'overpopulation could capsize Guam')

Hank Johnson
© AJC.comRep. Hank Johnson, (D-GA)
US Representative Hank Johnson, who told a Navy admiral in 2010 that overpopulation could cause Guam to capsize, said the police shooting of a protester who breached the Capitol on Wednesday saved black lawmakers from being hung.

"I have no doubt that some of us who look like me would have been hanging from the railings of the third floor onto the House floor, swinging like fruit, strange fruit," Johnson (D-Georgia), who is black, told the Rev. Al Sharpton on Saturday in an MSNBC interview.
US Air Force veteran Ashli Babbitt was shot in the throat and killed on Wednesday as she and more than a dozen other rioters tried to get into the Speaker's Lobby, a hallway that would have given them access to the House chamber.
Johnson said he was among 30-to-40 House members who were in the third-floor gallery of the House chamber at the time, claiming that he would have been trapped.

Comment: In the past, Mr. Johnson also compared Trump to Adolf Hitler and described Trump's Republican supporters as the dregs of society. And AOC's hyperbolic, inflammatory remarks? Pseudo-reality hysteria to serve a purpose.

B'Tselem: We are Israel's largest human rights group and we are calling this apartheid

apartheid wall ramallah israel
© Abbas Momani/AFP/Getty ImagesIsrael’s controversial separation barrier at the Qalandia crossing between the Palestinian city of Ramallah in the occupied West Bank and annexed east Jerusalem, December 2020.
One cannot live a single day in Israel-Palestine without the sense that this place is constantly being engineered to privilege one people, and one people only: the Jewish people. Yet half of those living between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea are Palestinian. The chasm between these lived realities fills the air, bleeds, is everywhere on this land.

I am not simply referring to official statements spelling this out - and there are plenty, such as prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu's assertion in 2019 that "Israel is not a state of all its citizens", or the "nation state" basic law enshrining "the development of Jewish settlement as a national value". What I am trying to get at is a deeper sense of people as desirable or undesirable, and an understanding about my country that I have been gradually exposed to since the day I was born in Haifa. Now, it is a realisation that can no longer be avoided.

The National Guard will have "at least" 10,000 troops deployed to Washington, D.C. by Saturday to prepare for President-elect Joe Biden's Jan. 20 inauguration, the Associated Press reported Monday.

The troops will guard against violent protests over Biden's inauguration following the storming of the U.S. Capitol last week in support of President Donald Trump. Democratic D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and the U.S. Department of the Interior have closed off several locations throughout the city thanks to "credible threats" ahead of inauguration. The FBI says armed protests prior to the inauguration have been planned in all 50 states.

While many social media users are abandoning established services such as Facebook and Twitter, or being blocked from the platforms, a Russian-made messaging service has risen to become one of America's most popular apps.

On Monday, UK newspaper The Daily Telegraph reported that Telegram had taken second place in the US downloads chart, according to exclusive data from the Sensor Tower market research agency. Between Wednesday and Sunday last week, more than half a million Americans downloaded the app, almost three times as many as the week before. It boasts of advanced security options, such as "self-destructing messages" for those "looking for extra privacy."
