Venezuela: Guaido's failed foreign tour ends with a flop, Maduro gains strength and allies

President Maduro
© Orinoco TribunePresident Maduro speaks to a massive crowd at Miraflores Palace on the anniversary of a failed Guaido coup
Juan Guaidó proclaimed himself the president of Venezuela a year ago but despite multiple coup attempts, he never took power and his support there rapidly disappeared. Now, with his foreign tour concluding, Guaidó's support is shrinking around the world as well. Rather than looking presidential, he appears clownish. Rather than developing new plans to try to topple President Maduro, he is left without any concrete promises from European governments, which have been more resistant than the United States toward imposing more sanctions despite Guaidó's pleading for support.

Despite his failures, according to US law, as long as President Trump recognizes him as the President of Venezuela then the courts will go along with the charade. Such is the situation we will face when we go to trial on February 11 for the charge of "interfering with certain protective functions" by the Trump administration. In the courtroom, Guaido is the president even though outside the courtroom he has never been president. Russian military shoots down unknown drone approaching Khmeimim air base from Med Sea

An unidentified drone has been intercepted near Russian Khmeimim airbase in Syria. The UAV approached the compound from the Mediterranean Sea and was shot down by the base's anti-air defenses.

The flying object came close to the military facility late on Monday, Russia's Defence Ministry has said. The drone was shot down by a Pantsir-S anti-aircraft system before it reached the premises of the base and it did not inflict any materiel damage or casualties. The origin of the drone has not been established yet.

Comment: The Latakia airbase is a regular target for drone attacks. Fortunately Russia has developed the sophisticated countermeasures needed to keep Khmeimim safe.

Turkey says 6 troops killed in shelling in Syria's Idlib, blames Damascus

Ankara has claimed that six Turkish soldiers were killed and several others injured after they came under heavy shelling in the rebel-held province of Idlib, while blaming Syrian Army forces for the attack.

In a statement on Monday, the Turkish Defense Ministry said that its forces came under "intense artillery fire" in the northwest Syrian province. It initially said four troops were killed and nine injured, including one seriously. The death toll was later updated to six.

The ministry said that the Turkish forces retaliated by destroying unspecified targets in the region. It also claimed that Ankara had warned Damascus in advance that its military reinforcements were moving to the area, which is the only opposition stronghold left in the war-ravaged country.

Comment: As usual, there is more to the story. Turkey initiated hostilities by crossing into Idlib, presumably to covertly support its terrorist proxies, as Syria has been steadily pushing the headchopping occupiers north towards the Turkish border.
The news comes after earlier this week Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accused Damascus of violating a ceasefire in the region and warned that Ankara may launch a military offensive unless the operation there is "quickly halted".

Syria launched a new military operation in the area on 19 December and managed to seize several cities in the province before striking a ceasefire that began on 12 January. The terrorists, however, continued their attacks, killing at least 40 Syrian servicemen and injuring 80 others last week, prompting Damascus to resume the offensive.
Turkey also failed to notify the Russian coordination center of their position, although they denied it, saying they had informed Russia. Given Turkey's spotty record for truthful statements, it's more likely Russia's version is correct, unless Turkey considers video posted on social media sufficient notice.
A shelling incident in Syria in which Ankara said six of its soldiers were killed may have been caused by the failure of the Turkish side to warn about the movement of their convoy, the Russian military said.

"Units of the Turkish military conducted movement within the Idlib de-escalation zone during the nighttime from February 2 to February 3 without informing the Russian side and came under fire by the Syrian government troops, which were targeting terrorists west of Saraqib," the Russian center for Syrian reconciliation said on Monday.
Nevertheless, Erdogan made threats of retaliation for the shelling. Various unsubstantiated reports were made of Turkish airstrikes on Syrian positions. The Russian coordination center denied the attacks occurred, but backed up Turkey's assertion of 'constant contact' with the coordination center.
[T]he Russian military has stated that Turkish aircraft didn't breach the Syrian border, adding that it didn't register any strikes on Syrian government forces' positions.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has commented on the attack on Turkish troops, saying that Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, did not hold a phone conversation, though "the Russian and Turkish military are in constant contact".

Template for Libya's destruction: Posturing predators; lethal lies

Libya beforeafter
© Quora, Libya Archives/KJN
Premeditated criminal violence has been around for a long time.

Deliberate criminal violence has motive, involves planning, and is cruel and harmful. The motive often involves the attempt at some real or imagined gain, or forceful seizure. Surprise attacks are favored.

Because the evil of such violence is obvious if in clear view, criminals usually attempt to hide such acts, or to obscure their crime with lies. Secrecy and dishonesty are generally indispensable basic tactics for the success of violent criminality. An exception historically is the criminal violence of those who rule tyrannically; their crimes are sometimes brazen, 'in your face'.

Wars of aggression are criminal violence on a massive scale. During the period after the 2nd WW, the last seventy five years that is, there have been lots of those. There is as yet no effective justice served to those who wage wars of aggression. Once a war has been initiated, one can surrender, or fight back, and hope for the best. Prevention is the best cure.

Paul Sperry's Notebook: The theft of investigative reporter John Solomon's laptop; vicinity of the White House

On the night before the Senate impeachment trial began, someone broke into veteran Washington investigative journalist John Solomon's car, which was parked near the White House, and stole his laptop, according to a D.C. Metropolitan Police Department report obtained by RealClearInvestigations.

The computer contained notes on Ukraine and former Vice President Joe Biden and other sensitive information, Solomon said in an interview. He said he was preparing to launch a new podcast and news site at the time.

Though the laptop has since been recovered, the investigation is still open. "The case has been assigned a detective and is under investigation," MPD spokesman Sean Hickman told RCI.

The Secret Service is also involved in the matter, which appears suspicious. Break-ins are rare in the high-security area where the crime occurred, just outside the White House perimeter, and a sophisticated device appears to have been used to get into the vehicle.

Israel and PA trade war: Jerusalem bans West Bank imports

Bennett halts fruit and vegetable imports after months of a Palestinian Authority boycott on Israeli meat; Ramallah said mulling ban of other products from Israel.

Israel and the Palestinian Authority appeared to be on the brink of a trade war Friday, after the Jewish state announced it was stopping all agricultural imports from the West Bank and Ramallah threatened to respond.

The root of the conflict is an October decision by the Palestinians to boycott cattle and sheep meat products, with the Palestinian Authority complaining that Israel was forcing it to buy from Israeli farmers and limiting its access to cheaper overseas meat products.

The boycott has led Israeli farmers to incur heavy losses and local growers have protested to the government to end the crisis, even dropping cattle outside Defense Minister Naftali Bennett's yard in Ra'anana earlier this month to drive home their point. "The minister can take care of them or stop the boycott," one farmer told the Ynet news site at the time.

In response, Bennett on Friday announced he had ordered a halt to all agricultural produce imported to Israel, starting on Sunday, February 2.

Geneva Switzerland: Libyan war parties sit down for talks as per agreement in Berlin

The two major warring parties in the Libyan civil war have for the first time sat down for commission-level talks in Geneva. The meeting was agreed at the Libya summit in Berlin, after a peace process started by Russia and Turkey.

Officials from the UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) and Libya's National Army (LNA), which is led by General Khalifa Haftar, have gathered in Geneva for the first session of the Libyan Joint Military Commission. The talks are UN-brokered and are moderated by the UN Special Representative Ghassan Salamé. Each side sent five of its officers to the meeting.

The commission was agreed as part of a deal reached in Berlin during a summit attended by Haftar, as well as the GNA Prime Minister Fayez al-Sarraj, alongside the leaders of France, Germany, Russia, Turkey, UK, and the US Secretary of State. The commission's first session is seen as a step forward in the Libyan conflict resolution, since the two sides previously repeatedly refused to engage in direct talks.

Life in Ukraine worse than during USSR, country may split into FIVE states - Georgia's convicted ex-leader Saakashvili

Just when you thought he'd finally gone away, Mikhail Saakashvili has popped up on Ukrainian TV to predict that his adopted nation will collapse. He also told viewers they lived better under the Soviet regime.

The former Odessa governor and Georgian president didn't hold back during an appearance on the 112 Ukraine TV channel.

"Ukraine's cities have never been in such bad condition, and every year it's getting worse and worse," he said, adding that while the "whole world" is moving forward and developing, the country has been left behind.

"Kiev, Ukraine is now much worse than Kiev and Ukraine during the times of the USSR," he explained. "I've been coming to Kiev since 1985... It's getting worse and worse, you can see all of it. The roads, the facades of the buildings, the city infrastructure." He added that, during his time as leader, Georgia improved in ways that Ukraine hasn't, while stressing that he has no nostalgia for the Soviet-era.

UK Home Sec Priti Patel branded 'moron' online after referring to terrorists as "COUNTER-terrorist offenders"

UK Home Secretary Priti Patel has been roasted on Twitter after bizarrely labeling terrorists such as the Streatham attacker as a 'counter-terrorist offenders' and blaming the old Labour government for his early release from jail.

In the aftermath of the stabbing attack carried out by 20-year-old Sudesh Amman in Streatham, South London on Sunday, Patel gave her response in an interview with Sky News. In somewhat odd remarks, she insisted that government measures announced just two weeks ago were aimed at dealing with "counter-terrorist offenders."

She also took aim at the last Labour government - which lost power almost 10 years ago - for a law providing for the automatic early release of terrorists.

Best of the Web: The 'resistance' will do anything and everything in their power to get Trump out

Trump
I never thought I'd hear myself say this, but I'm a little worried about Donald Trump. I'm worried he may be on the verge of a sudden, major heart attack, or a stroke, or a fatal golfing accident.

Food poisoning is another possibility. Or he could overdose on prescription medication. A tanning bed mishap is not out of the question.

He could accidentally hang himself during autoerotic asphyxiation, or get shot by a lone-wolf white supremacist terrorist trying to start the RaHoWa. The Russians could spray him with that Novichok perfume.

There are any number of ways he could snuff it.

I don't mean to sound alarmist, but the Resistance is running out of non-lethal options for removing Donald Trump from office. Here they are, in no particular order ...

Resistance Non-Lethal Option No. 1

Resistance Non-Lethal Option No. 1 is winning the 2020 election, which isn't looking very promising. The Democratic Party is in shambles. According to the polls, their current front-runner is a senile, hair-sniffing, finger-sucking freak who never met a credit card company or a healthcare lobbyist he didn't like, and who rivals even Donald Trump when it comes to incoherent babbling.
