A monster sinkhole in a Merrimon Avenue parking lot continues to expand at an alarming rate.

As of early afternoon on June 24, it's a yawning 27 feet in diameter. When Asheville firefighters responded to the scene on the morning of the sinkhole's appearance, they estimated it was about 20 feet deep. Now, those who dare to approach the edge figure it's twice as deep.

The property owner โ€” and neighbors on Merrimon Avenue โ€” find themselves scratching their heads. What's the emergency protocol when the ground gives up?

Tar and natural gas bubble up through streets near La Brea tar pits

A large puddle of tar encroached on the sidewalk and natural gas appeared to rise from the street of the Miracle Mile in Los Angeles Friday.

CBSLA's Brittany Hopper was standing near the puddle located across the street from The La Brea Tar Pits and Museum, a national natural landmark where tar has been seeping up from the ground for tens of thousands of years.

When CBSLA reached out to the Los Angeles Police Department, they said they were unaware of the situation.

The Page Museum, who reportedly runs the tar pits, has not been in contact regarding the situation.

As of Saturday morning, it was unclear if and when crews would begin to stop the tar from seeping out further.

Comment: It's notable that the area has been experiencing other phenomena that may just be connected: California and Nevada have experienced 240 earthquakes over 24 hours

More sinkholes in central Turkey appear

Uncontrolled and negligent use of groundwater threaten the Konya Plain in the eponymous central Turkish province, which is known as the "grain silo" of Turkey for its vast wheat fields.

The number of sinkholes has rose substantially in recent years due to excessive use of groundwater for irrigation, while authorities work on plans on how to fill the voids of some 330 sinkholes. No casualties were reported so far but sinkholes render a significant portion of fields unusable.

Sinkholes are almost exclusive to the Konya Plain, which stretches as far as neighboring province Karaman. The characteristics of the land, streaming direction of water, combined with underground waters' recline contribute to formation of sinkholes. Some are shallow while others are as deep as 150 meters. Sinkholes are a fairly recent phenomenon but uncontrolled use of water since 1970s is the main factor behind their rise. The State Hydraulics Works Agency declared areas with multiple sinkholes off-limits to use of groundwater as a precaution and works to inform farmers on how to properly use water for irrigation without draining up the water resources.

New study gives more detailed picture of Earth's mantle

The chemical composition of the Earth's mantle is a lot more variable and diverse than previously thought, a new study has revealed.

According to a new analysis of cores drilled through the ocean crust, the mantle is made up of distinct sections of rock each with different chemical make-ups.

The chemical composition of the mantle has been notoriously difficult to determine with a high degree of certainty because it is largely inaccessible.

Scientists have traditionally relied on lava that erupts on the ocean floor to give them some idea of what the mantle is made up of, and so far studies have suggested that it's chemically mostly the same everywhere on the planet.

However in their new study, published in Nature Geoscience, the team of researchers led by scientists at Cardiff University have studied the very first minerals that begin to form when lava first makes contact with the crust at mid-ocean ridges.

Giant sinkhole appears near farm house in Russia

sinkhole Russia
A giant sinkhole appeared in the village of Dedilovo of the Tula Region of Russia on the 8th of May. The huge hole in the ground the size of an ice hockey rink, in which one could put a five-storey building, appeared on the site where a tractor was working on the soil the day before. The edge of the sinkhole was just 40 meters from a house.

The household belongs to a resident of Tula, who bought this land just a short while ago. There is every chance for the sinkhole to grow larger. The sinkhole may swallow up the house as well.

Most likely, the phenomenon occurred as a result of the washout of limestone rock.

Local authorities haven't shown any reaction to the phenomenon. They only closed off the dangerous site around the hole.

100-foot wide sinkhole swallows patch of land in Dorset, England

Sinkhole in Dorset, England
A huge sink hole almost 100ft wide has swallowed a patch of land in Dorset next to a local walking path.

It first emerged in February when a dinner plate-sized hole appeared - the land suddenly collapsed this week and created the enormous pit.

The chasm was caused by the surface of the land collapsing into an ancient hollow created during the last ice age.

Over the past three months it has been monitored by geologists as it gradually increased in size.

sinkhole Indonesia
A giant sinkhole opened in rice fields in Indonesia, terrifying residents.
Residents of Kampong Sukabumi, Indonesia, were left terrified after discovering a huge 16 meters by 12 meters sinkhole in rice fields just 10 meters from their homes. Like during an earthquake, the huge crater collapsed in a loud noise and rumblings were felt several hundred meters away.

A very deep (12 meters) and large (16 meters length) sinkhole appeared suddenly in a loud boom, just 10 meters of resident homes, on Sunday, April 28, 2019, devouring a nice big part of a rice field.

Comment: And these monster sinkholes aren't limited to Indonesia: Although, perhaps due to it's geography, Indonesia does appear to be suffering more than most:
