A sinkhole near Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara spread to nearly 25 feet and swallowed at least two cars late Wednesday night, according to city officials.

A 12-inch recycled water pipe leaked and caused flooding in a commuter parking lot near Stars & Stripes Drive, triggering the incident, said Lon Peterson, a spokesperson for the city of Santa Clara.

"City Water & Sewer Utilities staff worked quickly to shut off the water supply; however, street flooding still occurred," Peterson wrote in a statement.

Utility staff were on the scene Thursday doing cleaning and repairs.

30-foot long sinkhole opens up outside post office in Morganton, North Carolina

A 30 foot long sinkhole has opened up in the parking area of a post office in Morganton, North Carolina.

It's right next to an area that had been cordoned off a few weeks back, and the sinkhole was likely caused by drainage issues with all the heavy rain.

The sinkhole is fairly deep. WBTV's Steve Ohnesorge observed what appears to be a culvert box at the head of the sinkhole. The box was made with red brick, signifying how long it's been there.

Emergency officials have not released any other information about the sinkhole. ⁦

A sinkhole that opened suddenly on a Los Angeles street swallowed the front half of a family's parked van.

The Los Angeles Fire Department said the vehicle was unoccupied Tuesday morning when the sinkhole opened underneath it on a street in the city's Crenshaw District.

A sinkhole that opened last week in a north Florida neighborhood expanded on Thursday, leading officials to urge residents from six nearby homes to evacuate.

Johnnie Candiano, 22, his brother Beau Candiano, 20, and cousin Mason Morton had been looking at the sinkhole on Thursday afternoon when they heard a loud noise and saw a tree fall in, the Gainesville Sun reported.

By late afternoon, they hastily threw bags of their belongings into cars, ready to leave the home in Gainesville's West End Estates neighborhood.

The sinkhole appeared to be about 50 feet (15-meters) wide and about 30 feet (9 meters) deep, said JoAnne Rice, interim chief at Gainesville Fire Rescue.

A massive sinkhole has opened up in south Edmonton at the intersection of 61 Avenue and 109 Street, leading to road closures that are expected to last for months.

EPCOR said the hole in the Parkallen neighbourhood opened up on Oct. 12, as a result of an "underground void" that had been discovered on Oct. 8 during an inspection of a sewer trunk line.

The hole, which is visible from the Global 1 helicopter, is approximately three metres long, one metre wide and 23 metres — or 75 feet — deep.

A house was swallowed when a 25ft-deep crater suddenly opened up in a Russian village.

One of two residents escaped but rescuers were today hunting for a 78-year-old woman amid the debris of the collapsed building.

One of the rescued residents said her aunt was still in the sunken house which fell into a sinkhole some 50ft in diameter.

'She fell underground with the house,' the survivor told a newspaper in the Bryansk region.

A sinkhole swallowed a large piece of a busy commercial street in Alexandria, Egypt, on October 14, local residents reported. Mohamed Abd Elnasser recorded footage of the incident and posted it to Facebook.

The video shows a large cracked circle in the middle of Forty Five Street. As Elnasser walks closer, the circle collapses, sending dust into the air and leaving a sizable hole in the street.

Elnasser told Storyful no one was hurt, and a large piece of wood was put in front of the damaged street to warn people of the danger.

A suspected sinkhole in Pasco County has continued to widen and is now forcing the evacuation of a neighborhood bar.

The county tells 10 Tampa Bay the large hole has gotten 10 feet wider since Tuesday and is now at least 35-feet wide and about 75-feet deep.

A county official says the nearby Varsity Club Sports Bar will be closed as a precaution.

The possible sinkhole, which is officially being called a depression until geologists make a final determination, opened up earlier this week just north of State Road 54 on the west side of Little Road at the intersection with Spring Haven Boulevard.

A large sinkhole suddenly appeared in a family's front yard in the north-central Vietnamese province of Quang Binh on Monday night, making local residents fear for their safety.

The sinkhole was reported to open up in the front yard of a house owned by Dinh Thi Van in Hoa Thanh Commune, Minh Hoa District, Quang Binh Province, local authorities confirmed.

At around 7:00 pm, her family heard a strange loud noise coming from the front of the house.

After rushing outside, Van found an enormous hole measuring up to about eight meters in diameter and more than three meters in depth.

Couple rescued from sinkhole in High Springs
Two North-Central Florida residents are safe after they fell 40-feet into a sink hole today.

According to High Springs firefighters, two people drove an A-T-V through the woods near Poe Springs Rd. in High Springs.

Crews said the A-T-V hit a slope and then fell into the sink hole.

The sink hole was filled with water and the two residents swam to the surface to wait for help.


Comment: A second sinkhole incident in the same city followed within 2 days, the latter concerning a trapped dog being rescued:
Alachua County Fire Rescue (ACFR) and High Springs Fire Department responded to a home in High Springs Monday morning for reports of a dog stuck in a sinkhole.

Crews arrived shortly after 6:30 a.m. to the home located at 22210 NW 188th St. There, they located Sam the dog at the bottom of a 40-foot sinkhole.

Lt. Brian Ferguson of ACFR used an extension ladder and rope system to descend into the hole and save the scared pup, using bacon to calm his nerves.


Sam's owner says that although he's tired, he doing fine.

This is ACFR's second sinkhole-related technical rescue in two days. While ACFR says sinkholes are common in the area, the recent increase in rain is likely a contributing factor in both scenarios.
