Best of the Web: World hammered by record 50 billion-dollar weather disasters in 2020

National Guard troops respond in the aftermath of Hurricane Laura in Lake Charles, Louisiana
© Josiah PughNational Guard troops respond in the aftermath of Hurricane Laura in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Laura was Earth’s most expensive tropical cyclone of 2020, with $18.2 billion in damage.
Earth was besieged by a record 50 billion-dollar weather disasters in 2020, the most such disasters ever recorded after adjusting for inflation, said insurance broker Aon (formerly called Aon Benfield) in its annual report issued January 25. The previous record was 46 billion-dollar weather disasters, set in 2010 and 2011. The annual average of billion-dollar weather disasters since records began in 1990 is 29.

The combined economic losses (insured and uninsured) from all 416 weather and earthquake disasters cataloged by Aon in 2020 was $268 billion (2020 USD). Most of the 2020 total, by far, came from weather-related disasters ($258 billion), 29% above the 2001-2020 inflation-adjusted average. Those numbers make 2020 the fifth costliest year on record for weather-related disasters.

The year was the most expensive ever for severe weather (including severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, and hail), with $63 billion in damage (previous record: $53 billion in 2011). More than 80% of the severe weather damage occurred in the U.S. in 2020, including the costliest severe weather outbreak in world history, according to Aon: an August 2020 event that featured a violent derecho in the U.S. midwest that caused $11 billion of the $12.6 billion in damage of the outbreak, the balance caused by tornadoes, hail, and other severe thunderstorms.

Insured damage from wildfires in 2020 was $12 billion - the third highest on record, behind only 2017 and 2018. The year 2020 marked the third time in the past four years that global insured losses from wildfires exceeded $10 billion - a threshold never crossed prior to 2017. Remarkably, wildfire has caused more than $70 billion in insured losses since 2000, 75% of that in the past five years alone.

Comment: It is becoming more apparent that erratic seasons, extreme weather patterns and natural disasters are increasing, which is not a consequence of "human-caused climate change" (formerly known as man-made 'global warming') as parroted relentlessly by the MSM, but part of a natural cycle.

The persistent rain has caused damage and flooding since tropical storm Eloise spilled over to South Africa from Mozambique. Five people are still missing.

As heavy rains continue to wreak havoc in different parts of Mpumalanga, the cooperative governance (CoGTA) department has said it fears the death toll due to the floods may rise.

Areas including Mbombela, Bushbuckridge, and Nkomazi were severely affected.

Best of the Web: Himalayan glacier bursts in India causing flash flooding & destroying dam, 150 feared dead

Glacier breaks in Uttarakhand's Joshimath
As many as 150 people were feared dead in northern India after a Himalayan glacier broke and crashed into a dam early on Sunday, with floods forcing the evacuation of villages downstream.

"The actual number has not been confirmed yet," but 100 to 150 people were feared dead, Om Prakash, chief secretary of Uttarakhand state where the incident occurred, told Reuters.

A witness reported a wall of dust, rock and water as an avalanche roared down a river valley.

"It came very fast, there was no time to alert anyone," Sanjay Singh Rana, who lives on the upper reaches of Raini village, told Reuters by phone. "I felt that even we would be swept away."

Comment: The Indian Express reports that just two days earlier, an avalanche occurred at the glacier. Which doesn't bode well for the Barry Glacier in Alaska where it's predicted that a landslide induced mega-tsunami 'could happen at anytime'.

With the above in mind, a recent study revealed that melting icebergs are a key feature of an ice age.

Authorities in Jordan have recovered the bodies of three people who went missing after their vehicle was swept away in a flash flood early Friday.

The Public Security Directorate said the brother of one of those missing died during the search near the town of Ruwaished, some 300 kilometers (190 miles) east of the capital, Amman.

Jordan often experiences flash flooding this time of year as heavy seasonal rains send torrents of water through its desert valleys.

The French prime minister says that a natural disaster will be declared after floods in the south west saw dozens evacuated from their homes.

The département of Lot-et-Garonne in south west France on Friday morning had 45 roads that were impassable, while six schools were closed and dozens of people were evacuated from their homes.

Visiting the area on Friday, Prime Minister Jean Castex said that the formal declaration of a catastrophe naturelle (natural disaster) would be put in place "after the briefest delay possible".

After thanking the "quite exemplary" rescue forces and expressing the "solidarity of the State", Castex announced that the file for declaring a state of natural disaster "will be examined, as always with great diligence, so that it can be declared as soon as possible".

Helicopters sent in to rescue dozens trapped in floodwaters across Gascoyne, Western Australia

Emergency services in Western Australia's north are working to evacuate dozens of people from floods in the Gascoyne region.

Operations were underway today to rescue around 40 people who became stranded in and around Minilya, about 120 kilometres north of Carnarvon.

A tropical low, previously expected to become WA's first cyclone of the season, dumped hundreds of millimetres of rain in the state's north last week, leading to flooding over major roads.

Truck driver Rob Minson was airlifted to safety by an RAC helicopter this morning, more than 36 hours after he became stranded on a patch of dry land along with three others.

"It was basically Gilligan's Island," he said.

"We were in the middle of nowhere."

The authority warned of thunderstorms with light to moderate rain and brisk winds in the capital Riyadh, Makkah, Madinah, the Eastern Province, Qassim, Tabuk, Hail, the Northern Borders Province, and Jawf. It also warned some areas will experience heavy rain that may lead to torrential flows and flooding.
