For two consecutive days, Banten found two dead cetaceans after being stranded on the region's beach. Monday, October 7th saw a whale shark also died at the Lebak Keusik Beach while the following day saw a bottlenose dolphin died after being stranded at Carita Beach.

According to the region's Head of the Utilization and Preservation of Coastal Resource Management Subsection, Zaid Abdur Rahman, the 7.5-meter whale shark was already dead when his team arrived.

A group effort by the government, police, agencies, and locals managed to move the whale's carcass to another location where it was eventually buried after samples were taken for further studies.

About 100 hornbills were spotted in flocks for the first time in southwest China's Yunnan Province.

In Tongbiguan Natural Reserve, researchers saw at least 99 hornbills cluster in flocks when they were conducting resource surveys in the area.

The hornbill earned its name with its yellow and black casque on top of its large bill and is a rare species of bird under national second-class protection in China.

A rarity of a small American bird being swept across the Atlantic by Storm Lorenzo before being discovered in a Co Kerry garden will be the envy of European birdwatchers for years to come, say experts.

The unexpected arrival on Irish shores of the Least Bittern earlier this week was tinged with sadness, however, when the bird died of exhaustion shortly afterwards.

Lorenzo delivered several US-based birds to Irish shores, but none as rare as the Bittern. It is only the 10th time one has been found on this side of the Atlantic.

Mysterious rash of cattle mutilations in Oregon

Dead Bull
© Anna King/Northwest News NetworkThe crumpled carcass of a bull lies on U.S. Forest Service ground. It was among several killed and mutilated this summer in eastern Oregon.
In the early morning light, dust from hooves creates a fog at Silvies Valley Ranch in remote eastern Oregon. Cowboys whistle and talk low to their eager herding dogs. They're moving the cattle from one vast, sage-studded range to another.

Five young purebred bulls mysteriously showed up dead on the ranch this past summer, drained of blood and with body parts precisely removed.

The ranch's vice president, Colby Marshall, drives his truck down a U.S. Forest Service road.

"Then we'll get out and take a little walk to where one of the bulls was found. And the carcass is still there," Marshall says.

Coming upon one of the dead bulls is an eerie scene. The forest is hot and still, apart from a raven's repeating caw. The bull looks like a giant, deflated plush toy. It smells. Weirdly, there are no signs of buzzards, coyotes or other scavengers. His red coat is as shiny as if he were going to the fair, but he's bloodless and his tongue and genitals have been surgically cut out.

Marshall says these young livestock were just reaching their top value as breeding bulls. The animals are worth around $6,000 each. And since these were breeding bulls, hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth of future calves were lost too.

Finding these young Herefords in this remote country can sometimes take the ranch's experienced cowboys days. Ranch staff members are now required to ride in pairs and are encouraged to carry arms.

"It's rugged," Marshall says. "I mean this is the frontier. If some person, or persons, has the ability to take down a 2,000-pound range bull, you know, it's not inconceivable that they wouldn't have a lot of problems dealing with a 180-pound cowboy."

Pigs recorded using tools for the first time

Visayan warty pigs
© Joel SartoreOnly about 300 Visayan warty pigs exist in captivity (pictured, an animal at the Minnesota Zoo). Their wild population is unknown.
On an October day in 2015, ecologist Meredith Root-Bernstein was watching a family of rare pigs at a Parisian zoo when something caught her eye.

One of the Visayan warty pigs — a critically endangered species native to the Philippines — picked up a piece of bark in its mouth and started digging with it, pushing the soil around. "I said, Whoa, that's pretty cool," says Root-Bernstein, a visiting researcher at the Musée de l'Homme in Paris and a National Geographic Explorer. "When I looked up tool use in pigs, there was nothing."

Intrigued, the scientist returned to the menagerie at the Jardin des Plantes frequently over the following months to try to observe the behavior again, to no avail. She hypothesized that what she'd seen was related to nest-building, which Visayan warty pigs generally do every six months to prepare for the arrival of piglets. Sure enough, the next spring, a colleague returned to the warty pig enclosure and recorded three of the four animals using tools to complete their nest, an earthen pit filled with leaves.

Three Gray's beaked whales wash up at Cape Point, South Africa

dead whales
Three Gray's beaked whales were stranded at Cape Point over the weekend with SANParks, NSRI and a number of relevant organisations responding to the scene to assist.

Upon arrival at the scene, two adult whales were found along with a calf. Both adults were dead on arrival and the calf died at the scene after a few hours.

Gray's beaked whales are rarely seen as they are deep water specialists, spending most of their time away from the view of the public. This particular species (Mesoplodon grayi) is one of the more common whale species along the SA coast. According to Sea Search Research & Conservation they are one of the few whales with "normal" teeth instead of more tusk-like teeth used in male on male competition.

Dengue fever cases surge 200% in Mexico in 2019

The number of confirmed dengue fever cases, where people contracted the disease or died from it, in Mexico has seen a fourfold surge to 15,084 over the past year, the epidemiological service of the country's Health Ministry said in a report.

Last year, 3,494 cases were registered, according to the report, issued on Friday.

Notably, around half of the confirmed cases have been registered in the states of Veracruz and Jalisco.

However, the number of unconfirmed dengue fever cases this year is 129,500, as of October, compared to 39,900 cases last year.

Comment: Mexico, like much of the planet, is seeing an increase in extreme weather, particularly torrential rainfall, and so one wonders whether at least one factor in the surge of dengue fever cases is the dramatic shift in weather patterns:

Alaska man recovering after bear mauling thwarted by his dad

bear
An Alaska man who was mauled by a bear before his father came to his rescue was being treated at Juneau hospital for deep bite wounds on his arm and leg, the father said Friday.

Casey Bradford, 21, was in good spirits but in a lot of pain a day after the brown bear attack near the Chilkat River, according to his father, 55-year-old Scott Bradford of Haines.

"I saw this brown thing chasing him," Bradford said. "My first thought was that it was a moose."

Bradford said he ran toward the bear and fired a shot over its head after it tackled his son. The spooked bear ran off as Bradford took better aim and fired again. He doesn't know if he struck the animal.
