Verbier has announced they'll be opening some slopes this Friday, November 2nd, following heavy snowfall across the Alps, which brought the Swiss resort 60cm of fresh snow so far.

"The Indian summer has indeed ended and gave way to a winter scenery that has been on the station for a few days. Indeed, more than 60cm of fresh snow cover the slopes of Lac des Vaux. Thanks to this snowfall and the machine-made snow, we can open our domain as of Friday 2 November with excellent conditions," a resort statement reads.

The opening of the Attelas-Ruinettes sector will follow as soon as possible according to the next weather conditions and the work done by our snowmakers.

The huge October snowfalls currently hitting the Alps have seen some big tallies now being reported by already-open glacier ski areas ...although most have had to close or delay opening due to strong winds and deep drifts.

The recently opened for the 18-19 season Diavolezza glacier near St Moritz in the Swiss Engadin region reports the most snow over the last 3 days at 142cm - or three inches less than five feet.

The Passo Stelvio ski area in Italy, pictured below, which is in the final week of its six month 2018 summer ski season, reports a metre of snow.

The end of summer time on the clocks was mirrored by the weather in Switzerland on Sunday as many places woke up to snow - with over 70 centimetres in the resort of Arosa.

The eastern Alps were affected in particular, where it snowed to quite low altitudes, the Swiss weather service MeteoSwiss told Keystone-SDA.

Parts of the eastern canton of Graubünden saw 30-70-centimetres of snow at over 1,200 metres above sea level.

New date, venue for World Cup event to be announced Monday

The season-opening men's World Cup giant slalom that was cancelled due to bad weather at the Rettenbach glacier on Sunday will be rescheduled for another resort in Europe.

The men's race director of governing body FIS, Markus Waldner, said the race will be held before the Christmas break, and that organizers were expected to announce the new date and venue on Monday.

Excessive snowfall and strong winds forced the cancellation of Sunday's race in Sö​lden, Austria.

Organizers initially delayed the start of the giant slalom by an hour, but called off the event soon after as no improvement of the weather was forecast.
