An avalanche killed five people on a snowshoeing tour in the Dachstein region of Austria on Sunday, police said.

The five people were believed not to be Austrian, but their identities were still under investigation, a spokeswoman for police in Upper Austria province said.

Spring arriving earlier across the US throwing wildlife into disarray

trout lily
© Katja Schulz/Wikipedia, CCYellow trout lily flowers nearly a week earlier now than in previous decades in the Appalachian Mountains.
Across much of the United States, a warming climate has advanced the arrival of spring. This year is no exception. In parts of the Southeast, spring has arrived weeks earlier than normal and may turn out to be the warmest spring on record.

Comment: An early and warm spring does not equal a warming climate, because the US and much of the planet are also breaking numerous cold records.

Apple blossoms in March and an earlier start to picnic season may seem harmless and even welcome. But the early arrival of springtime warmth has many downsides for the natural world and for humans.

Rising temperatures in the springtime signal plants and animals to come alive. Across the United States and worldwide, climate change is steadily disrupting the arrival and interactions of leaf buds, cherry blossoms, insects and more.

Severe winter weather kills over 55,700 livestock in the province of Khuvsgul, Mongolia

livestock dead
Extreme wintry weather, known as dzud in Mongolia, has killed more than 55,700 livestock animals in the northwestern province of Khuvsgul alone since late last year, the provincial agricultural department said Monday.

"Dzud" is a Mongolian term to describe the frigid winter that comes after a dry summer and causes the death of a great number of livestock due to starvation or cold weather.

"A total of 55,764 livestock animals have died in 11 soums (a type of administrative district in Mongolia) of our province since late last year due to the severe wintry weather. Heavy snowfalls have hit the province 16 times since the beginning of November," the department said in a statement.

The agricultural department and other relevant provincial organizations have been distributing grass and fodder to local herders free of charge or at discounted prices, it added.

Revelstoke Mountain in British Columbia sees 9.3 metres (30.5 feet) of snow this season and still counting

It feels like everyone you talk to in snow circles in North America or Canada has Revelstoke on their radar right now. The word is also out in Australia and you'll not only hear a few Aussie accents in the lift lines and the cafes, you'll find a few of Australia's top freeskiers making the most of this BC powder town including Nat Segal, Billy Lloyd-Blainey and recent settler Coen Bennie-Faull.

And there's a few very good reasons why. So, let's start with the terrain. It's huge, the mountain claims the biggest vertical of any resort in North America. Incredible bowls are just a short hike. Like trees? They've got glades. Like to feel the burn? Try a top-to-bottom and let us know how your thighs feel.

Then bury all that varied and vast terrain with a deep layer of snow. This winter Revy has seen a clockwork delivery of copious amounts of snow chalking up their second snowiest season on record - 931cms so far and it's not stopping anytime soon.

The operators of a Scottish snowsports centre say they are enjoying the best snow conditions in six years.

Glencoe Mountain estimates about 4m (13ft) of snow has fallen over the past three weeks and ski lifts and equipment huts have been partially buried.

Recent heavy snowfalls across Scotland's mountain areas followed a winter largely marked by mild weather and little snow.

All Scotland's outdoor snowsports centres have benefitted from snowfalls.

Bizarre snow strip forms over Kansas baffling forecasters

Rare narrow band of snow that stretches 150 miles long and 15
Rare narrow band of snow 150 miles long and 15 wide
Leigh Marts was on her way from St. Louis to Phoenix on Wednesday when she spotted something unusual out the window of her Southwest Airlines flight: a narrow strip of white, flanked by bare grass, lay painted across the Kansas prairie below.

A similar sight was seen above Hutchinson, Kansas.

Weather satellites confirmed the bizarre feature, which highlights the meteorological caprice that can give rise to such narrow swaths of snow. More than a foot of snow fell in the band, which was 10 to 15 miles wide in places. Just a few miles on either side, there were hardly flurries.

The thin stretch of intense snow was oriented northwest to southeast, passing through parts of Russell, Lincoln and Ellsworth counties in Kansas. The snow persisted toward Cottonwood Falls and Marion.

The National Weather Service has cancelled the blizzard warning and has instead issued a lake effect snow warning.

The lake effect snow warning is in effect in Jefferson, Lewis and Oswego counties until 4 a.m. Saturday.

According to the NWS, 31.7 inches of snow fell in Watertown as of 3 p.m. Friday. In Carthage, a whopping 40 inches of snow was reported as of 4:40 p.m. Friday.

Additional snow accumulations of 6 to 11 inches are possible in the most persistent snowfall areas. Wind gusts are forecast to be as high as 30 miles per hour.

The lake shore flood warning remains in effect until 7 p.m. Friday.

Comment: Update: Newyorkupstate.com reports on 29th February:
Meteorologists were predicting up to 4 feet of snow could fall this week in a lake effect snowstorm that was intense even for Upstate New York.

Up to 73 cm (29 inches) of snow dumped in southern Ontario, Canada

snowfall
Environment Canada got out the ruler and measured 53 cm of snow in Barrie as a result of the recent snow squall activity.

The tally came in around 9:30 Saturday morning.

The difference in snowfall from one place to the next shows how localized these squall events can be.

In Shanty Bay, a weather spotter reported 19 cm, while Phelpston, just south of Elmvale, recorded 39 cm.

The area around Flesherton was the most severely punished, with totals between 62 and 73 cm of snow.
