Indian Army rescues 560+ stranded civilians amid heavy, record breaking snowfall

Record snow in India
Over the past week, the Indian Army has airlifted some 600 stranded civilians from Sela Pass and Gurez following months of intense snowfall and sub-zero temperatures.

The entire Gurez Valley has been cut off from Kashmir since early November, 2019 due to exceptionally heavy snowfall, with snow-clearing efforts along the key Razdan Pass -which connects Bandipora to Kanzalwan- not expected to be completed until the end of April.

On March 14, the Dawar Battalion of Snow Leopard Brigade received a request from the civil administration to evacuate 160+ civilians stranded in the "cut-off" Gurez and Bandipora regions.

The operation lasted hours amid record-breaking snowfall, reports republicworld.com — and key to its success was the immediate medical support given to critically-ill patients suffering from the cold.

Saturday's evacuation of 160+ people came just days after March 8th's efforts to save 390+ stranded at Sela Pass in Tawang district, again due to record-breaking snowfall.

"The rescue operation was carried out at an altitude of 14,000 feet on the nights of March 7 and 8," Tezpur based Defence Spokesman Lt Col Harsh Wardhan Pande said. Those rescued were again provided with "immediate medical support" as well as "hot snacks".

India's record snowfall has contributed to the staggering accumulations across the Northern Hemisphere this season — levels are currently some 500+ gigatons above the 1982-2012 average:

The weather in Iceland remains turbulent this week and the Westfjords region is worst affected. There is an orange weather warning in effect and the north-easterly storm with heavy snow will continue into tomorrow. The orange warning remains in effect until 20.00 this evening.

The Coastguard vessel Týr is arriving in Flateyri as a precaution, as the village is on avalanche alert; as is Patreksfjörður. Some residential properties in both communities have been evacuated as a precaution, and some industrial buidlings in Ísafjörður have been evacuated for the same reason.

According to the Icelandic Met Office, there has also been a strong easterly wind affecting the north and east, with significant precipitation in East Iceland. South Iceland has gentler southerly winds with scattered sleet and rain showers but plenty of sunshine in between.

Late winter storm continues in Sierra Nevada - dumps up to 4 feet of new snow

The Sierra snowpack has been boosted over the last few days.
© Mike PeronThe Sierra snowpack has been boosted over the last few days.
After a slow wet season without much precipitation, the Sierra Nevada mountain range region in California is finally starting to see some heavy snow.

AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski said parts of the central and northern Sierra Nevada were buried under somewhere between 1-4 feet of snow since it started falling on Sunday. The Sierra Nevada Mountains are usually pummeled with "yards and yards" of snow in the winter, and this snowfall is helping that area make up for a long drought.

"There have probably been periodic blizzard conditions, but most places were below that criteria," Sosnowski said. Blizzard criteria are reached when a storm sustains winds or wind gusts of 35 mph or greater, and the visibility diminishes to less than one-quarter of a mile for three consecutive hours.

Comment: Immediately prior to this latest dump up to 38 inches of snow in 24 hours hit the region.

Man killed in avalanche at Pebble Creek, Idaho

avalanche
An avalanche at Pebble Creek Ski Area killed an American Falls man, Paul "Phil" Bregitzer, 60.

The Bannock County Sheriff's Office reported Bregitzer was skiing with friends on the popular out-of-bounds run, Canal Street, near the north boundary line.

Around 1 p.m., wet snow caused a 300 yard avalanche, six to seven feet deep. Bregitzer was reportedly buried under three feet of snow, without a beacon to help ski patrol find his location.

Reports initially said he'd been skiing alone. But, friend of Bregitzer, Doug Balfour, called to tell us Bregitzer was skiing with friends, who helped dig him out of the snow and performed CPR.

The storm is exactly what they said it would be: snow accumulations of up to a foot, drifting snow making highway travel hazardous and subfreezing temperatures putting a strain on livestock producers.
In other words a typical spring storm in Montana.

"Last night was pretty much an every hour, hour-and-a-half check because they wouldn't have lasted through too long out there in that wind," said Dana Darlington, a Stanford area rancher describing the effort it took to keep his newborn calves alive.

"We got about five-, six-inches of snow and about a 40-mile-per-hour east wind all night long, so it was pretty tough," he said. " We had some calves in a new windbreak, and we thought that would be the answer, but it was swirling around so hard that they were pretty iced up this morning."
