Rare August tornado strikes Jackson Metro, Mississippi

Madison tornado damage
© WeatherNation tweet (screen capture)
A rare August tornado touched down in the Jackson Metro on Friday Evening after 5PM.

The tornado was rated an EF1 and tore through the northern suburbs of Madison and Ridgeland between I-55 and the Natchez Trace.

Damage occurred to numerous homes in the Sandalwood Subdivision. Numerous homes had roof damage and many trees were flattened. At the Madison Airport, the tornado passed within yards of an official weather station. A wind gust of 97 mph was recorded as it moved by.

August tornadoes are quite rare for Mississippi. Most tornadoes that touch down in August in Mississippi and Alabama are the result of tropical systems passing through the area, similar to last years Reform tornado on August 30th.

But this tornado was the result of several outflow boundaries merging, causing ideal local conditions for a tornado to form. In fact, since 1985 this is only the 4th non-tropical tornado the National Weather Service in Jackson has surveyed.

A strong 6.3-magnitude earthquake rocked the Indonesian island of Lombok on Sunday, sending people fleeing into the streets just two weeks after a quake which killed more than 460 people.

The quake was centred west-southwest of Belanting town in East Lombok, the US Geological Survey said, at a relatively shallow depth of seven kilometres.

Residents said the earthquake was felt strongly in East Lombok.

"I was driving to deliver aid to evacuees when suddenly the electricity pole was swaying. I realised it was an earthquake.

"People started to scream and cry. They all ran to the street," East Lombok resident Agus Salim told AFP news agency.

The tremor was also felt in the island's capital Mataram and on the neighbouring resort island of Bali.

A powerful magnitude 7.9 quake has struck in the Pacific Ocean, 291 km (180 miles) from Ndoi island of Fiji, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The quake hit at a depth of 570km (354 miles), too deep to cause a tsunami. Its power approaches the strongest deep-focus (over 300km deep) quake on record, the magnitude 8.3 Okhotsk Sea quake of 2013.

Signs and Portents: Two-headed snake hatched in Pittston, Pennsylvania

© Jimmy Fisher | Sunday DispatchGemini, the two-headed snake, is already four weeks old and will, hopefully, be on display at The Pet Zone in Pittston should it live past six months.
A little over a month ago, a snake egg began hatching at The Pet Zone and two little heads popped out of the shell.

Bill Pambianco Sr. and his son, Bill Jr., thought it was twin snakes. But, it was something much different.

"There was two heads sticking out and we thought it was twins but, as it emerged a little more, we saw it had two heads," Bill Jr. said. "There was no inclination; it was just a random thing that happened. We did not know that it was going to be two-headed."

According to Bill Jr., manager of the Pet Zone and a reptile enthusiast, there is a 1 in 100,000 chance of a two-headed snake hatching.

Climate patterns are shifting across the globe with areas becoming wetter and others moving to drought. The NE USA is a region that got 5x more rainfall than usual in July 2018. Arctic temperatures are still well below normal with huge sea ice concentrations remaining and the California wildfires are now squarely on forestry mismanagement according to the US federal government.

Video shows gigantic fire tornado that killed firefighter in Redding, California

wildfire
Recently released video from Cal Fire shows the most intense tornado ever in California history that trapped and killed a firefighter in Redding last month.

37-year-old Jeremiah "Jeremy" Stoke was a longtime Redding Fire Department veteran. According to Cal fire, on July 26th, he was driving his truck in northwest Redding and helping evacuate residents from the Carr Fire when he got into trouble.

Stoke radioed out a mayday call, saying he was getting burned over. Then his transmissions abruptly stopped.

The fire tornado exploded in the middle of what was already a gigantic and devastating wildfire.

earthquake costa rica M6.1 August 18 2018
A strong and shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.1 hit Costa Rica at 23:22 UTC (17:22 local time) on August 17, 2018. The agency is reporting a depth of 15.9 km (9.8 miles). EMSC is reporting M6.1 at a depth of 44 km (27.3 miles). This earthquake can have a low humanitarian impact based on the magnitude and the affected population and their vulnerability.

The epicenter was located 18.4 km (11.5 miles) W of San Vito (population 3 981), 47.2 km (29.3 miles) SSE of Buenos Aires (population 11 680), Costa Rica and 54.8 km (34.1 miles) W of Volcan (population 10 286), Panama.

There are about 880 000 people living within 100 km (62 miles) and 4 700 within 10 km.

Some 25 000 people are estimated to have felt strong shaking, 165 000 moderate, 2 052 000 light and 12 661 000 weak.

The USGS issued a green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.

Deep M6.6 earthquake hits north-east of Raba, Indonesia

Earthquake strikes north east of Raba, Indonesia
© USGSEarthquake strikes north east of Raba, Indonesia on Friday (Aug 17).
A relatively deep offshore earthquake struck the Indonesian archipelago late on Friday (Aug 17), according to data from the US Geological Survey.

The magnitude-6.6 quake was located 153km north-east of Raba at a depth of 564.7km, the USGS said.

Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said in a tweet there was no tsunami risk.

Netizens took to social media to share news about the earthquake, with some saying they had felt it in Bali, about 580 km from Raba.

The epicentre of Friday's quake was around 500km from the island of Lombok, where two deadly tremors - and dozens of aftershocks - wreaked widespread damage earlier in the month.

A magnitude-6.2 earthquake rocked Lombok on Aug 9, sparking panic after a powerful earthquake just four days earlier.

Indonesia sees frequent earthquakes as it is situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire.
