An Israeli-American citizen being held by Hamas in Gaza has been announced dead, according to the Hostages and Missing Persons Families Forum representing the families.

Gadi Haggai, a 73-year-old Israeli-American hostage who was taken hostage during Hamas' Oct. 7 terrorist attack, was announced as the first American hostage to have died in the Israel-Hamas war, the Forum told the Times of Israel. Haggai's wife, Judi, still remains in captivity by Hamas, the outlet reported.

Haggai and his wife had gone out for a morning walk "in fields and vineyards" before being shot at and eventually kidnapped by Hamas, the Times of Israel reported. Hamas is reportedly holding his body in Gaza, the outlet reported.

Hostages and Missing Persons Families Forum said in a statement:
"Gadi was a man full of humor who knew how to make those around him laugh. A musician at heart, a gifted flutist, he played in the IDF Orchestra and was involved with music his whole life."

Comment: Biden/Israeli narrative is likely optic-manipulated. Hamas treated prisoners respectfully since the war began.

Big business scales back 'Diversity' initiatives as legal pressure mounts

A number of major corporations and firms backtracked from Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives in 2023 amid heightened public criticism and threats of litigation. Companies like BlackRock and JPMorgan Chase, as well as several law firms, previously instituted several DEI initiatives in their policies and hiring practices, according to a review of their public statements. Following legal accusations that these policies promote discrimination and unfair business practices, these companies backtracked from certain DEI policies in 2023.

Law firm American Civil Rights Project (ACR) sent a letter to JPMorgan in May 2022 threatening legal action unless the banking company would "retract a host of illegal, discriminatory policies it has adopted." ACR pointed to 10 separate examples of JPMorgan's "illegal policies," including the company's Advancing Black Pathways program.

In February, roughly a year after receiving the letter from ACR, JPMorgan changed the language of that program to allow all freshmen and sophomore undergrad students "regardless of background" to apply, Reuters reported.

BlackRock, a global investment management firm, claims that DEI is a "business imperative," and factors it into policy choices and operations. BlackRock also says it holds investors "accountable for progress in [DEI]" and sets "business-specific DEI goals."

BlackRock has come under scrutiny for its DEI practices and is now facing a legal challenge after receiving a federal civil rights complaint in April from America First Legal. The complaint alleges that BlackRock "unlawfully limits, segregates and/or classifies applicants for employment based on race."

Human Events Senior Editor Jack Posobiec said his parents were swatted "again" on Christmas day.

The Posobiec family was swatted a few days earlier.

"Parents just got swatted again Christmas night," Posobiec wrote.

"They told the officers that I had shot my wife and sons in the kitchen," he added.

Comment: Swatting is not just harassment, it's done with the intent of harming or killing the target.

Bethlehem cancels Christmas celebrations over Israel-Hamas war

The normally bustling biblical birthplace of Jesus resembled a ghost town on Sunday, as Christmas Eve celebrations in Bethlehem were called off due to the Israel-Hamas war. The festive lights and Christmas tree that normally decorate Manger Square were missing, as were the throngs of foreign tourists who gather each year to mark the holiday.

Dozens of Palestinian security forces patrolled the empty square.

The gift shops were slow to open on Christmas Eve, although a few did once the rain had stopped pouring down. There were few visitors, however.

Buick dealers shun Net Zero EV revolution

Half of Buick Dealers are taking buyouts to avoid having to sell GM electric cars

Almost half of Buick dealers across the United States have opted to take buyouts from General Motors (GM) to avoid having to sell Electric Vehicles (EVs) at a time when consumer reports show Americans are increasingly turned off by the cars.

According to GM, almost 1,000 of its nearly 2,000 Buick dealerships across the U.S. chose to take buyouts from the parent company rather than investing potentially millions into retooling and prepping dealers to service and sell EVs.

The buyouts mean that GM will now have just about 1,000 Buick dealerships across the nation as the automaker moves forward with adhering to President Joe Biden's green energy agenda.

Comment: From What's Up With That:
"we've given dealers who are not aligned with Buick's future to exit voluntarily in a respectful and structured way ..."
GM buys out around half of its Buick dealers

Dealers accepting the buyouts declined to invest hundreds of thousands of dollars to sell and service General Motors' future electric vehicles.

Published Dec. 21, 2023
  • General Motors has bought out around half of Buick dealers that declined to invest at least $300,000 to sell and service its future electric vehicles, a company spokesperson confirmed in an email.
  • Dealers accepting the buyout will no longer sell Buick vehicles, but they can continue to sell GMC and Chevrolet brand vehicles, according to the Wall Street Journal.
  • The buyouts come as GM significantly scaled back its EV rollout as the company deals with weak demand, manufacturing delays and low margins on EVs. Buick has no electric models on the market, but GM plans to transform the luxury brand into an EV-only brand by 2030.
Dive Insight:

The investment by dealers is intended to cover the costs of installing EV chargers, training staff to service EVs and other initiatives, according to the Wall Street Journal. Before the buyouts, GM had roughly 2,000 Buick dealers. However, a GM spokesperson told the WSJ that most Buick dealers have made the required upfront EV investments. As a result of the buyouts, GM said it will have around 1,000 Buick dealers left.

...

"This year we've given dealers who are not aligned with Buick's future to exit voluntarily in a respectful and structured way; with the full support of our National Dealer Council," a GM spokesperson said in an email.
As a small business owner I can imagine the anguish of dealers opting to give up businesses they have built over the years rather than follow GM into their high risk EV gamble. Running a business is more than a job, it is a labor of love - something you put your heart into, part of your identity as a person.

I'm guessing the dealers who accepted the buyouts felt they had no choice.

It is unlikely the $300,000 required investment to retool for EVs is the reason automobile dealers left the industry. There is big money in automobiles, a friend who runs a repair shop and towing service in a country town makes well north of $100,000 per month. The only reason I can think of for business owners bailing over a $300,000 mandatory investment is if the dealers thought they would lose a lot more than $300,000.

GM might have the political pull to demand and receive fat taxpayer bailouts when management incompetence drives the company into bankruptcy. Small independent automobile dealers not so much.

Merry (late) Christmas from Australia - I hope everyone had a day filled with love and loved ones.

Journalists covering the Russia-Ukraine conflict for the New York Times have been recruited by Russian secret services, Kiev's information warfare agency alleged on Monday. The state-run Center for Countering Disinformation (CCD) made its statement while blasting the newspaper for a recent article about the prospects of peace negotiations between Moscow and Kiev.

"In order to write this text, the Russian Federation has used American journalists who were recruited during their work in Russia," the CCD said in a statement on social media, without elaborating.

The story published by the New York Times on Saturday lists its Moscow bureau chief Anton Troianovski, together with staff writers Adam Entous and Julian E. Barnes, in the byline.

Israel on Monday (Dec 25) found itself grappling with widespread power outages and internet blackouts after at least two production units of a major power company collapsed.

The blackout fueled speculations that it might have something to do with the ongoing war in Gaza and a potential cyberattack by Iran.

However, Meir Spiegler, the CEO of Israel Electric Corporation (IEC) rubbished these claims, without providing any cause for the collapse of the units.

University of Wisconsin approves $600,000 grant to study 'lasting effects' of puberty blockers on children's brains

University of Wisconsin protest
In July, the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) approved a $600,000 Collaborative Health Sciences Program grant by the Wisconsin Partnership Program (WPP) to study the effects puberty blockers have on a child's brain.

According to documents obtained by the Daily Caller, the study was proposed in April to investigate the effects of cross-sex hormones and puberty blockers on rats. Those conducting the study hypothesized that the drugs lead to "lasting changes" in the developing brain.

A slideshow presentation to the Wisconsin Partnership Program (WPP) said researchers expected to see "decreasing adolescent anxiety," but also potential changes in "biomarkers associated with mental health risk, fertility, bone and kidney health."

Comment: While the activists would have you believe these puberty blockers are harmless, many doctors with experience are saying the opposite. Even a risk of irreversible damage to children's growth and development is unacceptable.

Best of the Web: To the last Ukrainian: Kiev begins doomed conscription scheme that includes people with significant disabilities

Ukraine has been under martial law since February 24, 2022, and the next day President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree on general mobilization. It is forbidden for men aged 18-60 to leave Ukraine during the period of martial law.

Comment: Many fled when they could, others have bribed their way out since, and those that are left have found ways to avoid being dragged to the front.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces have said they do not know how to mobilize 500,000 more troops, as volunteers have "run out".

"The volunteers who wanted to join the ranks of the Ukrainian Armed Forces have run out... To say exactly when mobilization will be and how qualitatively, it is difficult to say... how to implement it physically, there is no understanding," said Major General of Ukrainian forces Dmitry Marchenko in an interview with Deutsche Welle.

Comment: More details on the new parametres, as well as footage of the new enforcement in action:

To the last Ukrainian:

People with "amputated limbs, practical blindness, absence of one lung or eye and bilateral deafness" can be conscripted into military based on draft of new law on mobilization.

"The large draft law on mobilization exempts from military service on the basis of health status only in the presence of the first and second groups of disabilities.

The third group is not mentioned in the draft document, so they are automatically considered suitable. Assigning the third group of disabilities means quite serious health problems, in particular limb amputations.

Here are the main examples: absence of one lung or eye; practical blindness resulting from an occupational disease, occupational disability or military injury. One eye after a domestic injury or illness; bilateral deafness; paralysis or absence of a hand, paralysis of the upper or lower limbs; a significant defect of the bones of the skull, pulsation of the brain; the absence of a hand and a higher level of amputation of the upper limb; the absence of all phalanges of the four fingers of the hand, except for the first; absence of fingers on the hand, stump of the thigh or lower leg; congenital or acquired dislocation of the hip joints or one hip joint with significant functional impairment; complete thyroidectomy (removal of the thyroid gland); artificial valve in the heart; absence of one kidney with pathology of the other; bilateral mastectomy (breast removal in women due to mammary gland diseases).

The draft law on mobilization, which is being prepared, provides for new duties for Ukrainians.

On December 21, MP Maryana Bezugla published on Facebook theses from the upcoming document, from which it follows that everyone is obliged to appear at the military commissariat to clarify personal data and undergo a medical examination.

There will no longer be a category of "limited suitability" for service."

Zelensky is in zugzwang when it comes to mobilization. Ukraine is unlikely to have a lot of big offensive potential lacking both the motivated troops and the necessary equipment in the quantity needed, however even to defend the country needs a lot more manpower.

Ukraine is currently tightening the mobilization laws. Which will lead to some unpleasant things. Many men will literally go into hiding, not showing up to work not to receive a draft notice as long as they're able to survive off their savings as long as possible or the money their wives, girlfriends or parents earn. In 2021 Ukraine's agricultural exports totaled over $27 billion, accounting for 41% of the country's overall exports.

This economy sector took a massive hit with this war. Many fields are covered with mines, Ukraine lost control of some rich agricultural areas, Kakhovka dam destruction, Ukraine not able to export as much it wants to with sea routes due to Russian blockade. Another important factor turned out to be the mobilization. Most of Ukrainian villages have been emptied out of military age men.

From conversations with people involved in agricultural business it's acknowledged that a lot of workers from rural areas have been mobilized, many have already been killed which will lead to shortage of workers in agricultural sector all across Ukraine. With villages and small towns already maxed out Ukraine will have to find a way to mobilize the planned 500,000 in big cities.

Looking to mobilize half a million men that have been trying to avoid exactly that for close to 2 year is by no means going to be easy task in itself. Then you will have to equip and train them. Those are two more problems even if he accept it as a fact that Ukraine will be able to mobilize them. Ukraine will need the resources and to find a way to train them under the threat of Russian strikes on potential training grounds.

Again we're talking about the need to forcibly draft 500,000 people in already limited mobilization pool of Ukraine. The men that didn't sign up on their own to join the army since February, 2022. Trying to take out 500,000 more men out of the already struggling economy to mobilize them into the army, plus the men that will try to hide from mobilization will certainly become a major problem for Ukraine next year.

This is one big crisis in the making.Combine that with the uncertainties when it comes to military and financial aid in upcoming year and there is a situation where Ukraine is going to be under a lot of pressure from various angles, not just by the Russian military on the front line slowly grinding its way forward.
