A Texas border mayor is begging President Biden to help his town struggling under extreme weather conditions, the coronavirus pandemic, and an influx of undocumented migrants crossing the border. Bruno Lozano, Mayor of Del Rio, Texas said in a video message to Biden Wednesday:
"I am pleading and requesting with you to please put a halt to any measures regarding the release of immigrants awaiting court dates, into the city of Del Rio and surrounding areas. If you do send these individuals into our community, we will be forced to make a decision to leave them without resources."

Global Covid-19 'cases' have plummeted by 50% since January

world coronavirus

According to a new tally, there has been a steep decline in new Covid-19 cases worldwide - a somewhat precipitous drop of 50 percent from the January peak, despite research indicating cooler temperatures improve transmissibility.

New global case numbers have reached their lowest levels in four months, dropping below 400,000 to roughly 362,000 new cases, according to the latest AFP tally, which noted that new infections worldwide are down 12 percent over the past week, from a high of 743,000 in January.

This constitutes the sharpest and most prolonged drop in new infections since the start of the pandemic.

Lest anyone get too carried away, this drop in confirmed cases doesn't tell the whole story, as not only do authorities around the globe not know the true number of infected (accounting for untested, asymptomatic and so on) but countries also have different counting and testing practices which make determining the true global figure nigh on impossible.

Comment: Great Game India reports that the WHO updated it's PCR test guidance as of January 20th, could a change in threshold have contributed with the decrease in cases?

Comment: It's unlikely this drop is due to the vaccines, because as manufacturers of the experimental mRNA vaccines have admitted, they do not stop people from contracting the virus: The Inanity of RNA Vaccines For COVID-19

Entire Oakley school board resigns over embarrassing hot mic moment during public meeting

Oakley Trustee Richie Masadas
© screencaptureOakley Elementary School District Trustee Richie Masadas grabs his head as he discusses parents who want their children to return to physical schools just before the start of a school board meeting on Feb. 17, 2021.
'B — - if you call me out, I'm going to f — you up,' now-ex board member said

It started with profanity, jokes about parents just wanting a babysitter or to smoke pot in their homes, and then came the horrible realization by the elected officials making these remarks that they were on a live video stream being broadcast to the public.

And now, the three-day saga that has garnered national attention and widespread condemnation has resulted in the resignation of the entire Oakley Union Elementary School District Board, according to a letter Friday from the district's superintendent, Greg Hetrick. He wrote that county education board members will replace the board in an interim capacity.

"We deeply regret the earlier comments that were made in the meeting of the Board of Education earlier this week," a joint statement by now ex-board members Kim Beede, Erica Ippolito and Richie Masadas says. "As trustees, we realize it is our responsibility to model the conduct that we expect of our students and staff, and it is our obligation to build confidence in district leadership; our comments failed you in both regards, and for this we offer our sincerest apology."

Comment: The Daily Caller follows up:
Lisa Brizendine, the president of the Oakley Union Elementary School board, resigned and apologized for her "callous and uncalled for" remarks during a meeting that board members thought was private, but was actually available to the public, KTVU reported Friday.

"I am raising a 10-year-old with special needs and having him home during this pandemic, while also holding down two jobs to support my family has been a huge stress," Brizendine said in a statement to KTVU. "I suffer with many of the same things that parents are going through from mental health issues to regression."

"My remark was callous and uncalled for and for that I am truly sorry," she added.

"I tendered my resignation because I don't want to be a part of something that would negatively impact my community. The students, staff and families deserve the very best, there is much work that needs to be done to reopen our schools safely and I will be praying that we as a community can move past this incident together and that our children always remain in focus."

As of Friday, Brizendine was no longer listed as a member of the board of trustees.

A Change.org petition was launched following the meeting, demanding that the board resign because of their behavior. More than 5,400 people signed the petition as of Friday afternoon, and the signature goal was pushed from 1,000 on Thursday to 7,500.

"They did not realize they were being broadcast and that the public could hear them," the petition said. "During that time board members decided to speak in a VERY disrespectful way about parents in the school district, including using profanity, speaking about parents using marijuana, and that parents just wanted their babysitters back."

Many of the commenters on the petition cited growing child suicide rates, depression and other mental health issues that have alarmed parents during virtual learning

A new study from renowned University of Hamburg researcher Roland Wiesendanger concludes the Wuhan Institute of Virology was the "cause" of COVID-19.

The February study argues against two prevailing theories that COVID-19 was transmitted to humans either via a wet market or a lab accident.

"To date, there is no scientifically based rigorous evidence for either mentioned theories," Wiesendanger, a three-time recipient of the prestigious European Research Council grant.

Malaysian news site fined $123,000 over reader comments amid press freedom fears

Steven Gan

One of Malaysia's most prominent independent news outlets has been has been found in contempt of court over comments posted by readers, a verdict condemned as a grave setback for freedom of expression in the country.

The attorney general filed the charges against Malaysiakini and its editor-in-chief Steven Gan last year over five reader comments that were critical of the judiciary.

Gan and the outlet maintained they could not be held responsible, and that moderators had removed the offending comments as soon as they were contacted by police. However, a federal court ruled that the website held full responsibility and fined it 500,000 ringit ($123,000) on Friday.

Gan, who faced a possible prison sentence over the allegations, was found not guilty.

Gan said Malaysiakini was very disappointed by the decision and that it will have "a tremendous chilling impact on discussions of issues of public interest".

ACLU wants Supreme Court to abolish male-only military draft

The ACLU issued a new petition saying women should be required to register for enlistment as well.

A new petition issued from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has made it to the Supreme Court and aims to declare the historic male-only military draft to be unconstitutional.

Noting that the U.S. Department of Defense lifted the ban on women serving in combat in 2013, the petition specifies that the obligation for men to register upon turning 18 years old has yet to be applied to women.

"Thousands of women have since served with distinction in combat positions across all branches of the military," the formal petition reads. "The registration requirement has no legitimate purpose and cannot withstand the exacting scrutiny sex-based laws require."

Cuomo stonewalled COVID-19 nursing home data. But it was worse than just a coverup.

You've heard the expression that the coverup is worse than the crime? Well, in the case of New York Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo (D), the opposite might be true.

Cuomo is under bipartisan fire after an aide admitted that his administration deliberately delayed releasing information showing the true extent of covid-19 deaths in New York nursing homes, out of fears, according to the aide, that the information "was going to be used against us."

Stonewalling the Justice Department is bad enough, but Cuomo did something even worse: His administration provided inaccurate data to public health officials in real time, at the beginning of the crisis, when government scientists were desperately trying to figure out how the virus was spreading, who was most vulnerable and how to stop it. Instead of meeting its obligation to provide accurate information, the Cuomo administration provided incomplete data about nursing home deaths apparently because he feared real data would hurt him politically. That is like providing false intelligence to battlefield commanders about the location of the enemy in a time of war.

At last: Biden to declare major disaster in Texas as millions hit by water shortages

Joe Biden said on Friday he was ready to declare a major disaster in Texas after a deadly winter storm cut power and disrupted water supplies for millions across the state.

Biden said the declaration, which follows a request from the Texas governor, Greg Abbott, would open up broader federal aid for immediate and long-term recovery efforts.

A presidential visit to the state is being planned for next week.

"As I said when I ran, I'm going to be a president for all Americans," said Biden, who won November's election without winning Texas, of his plans. "If I can do it without creating a burden for folks, I plan on going."

Comment: RT reports on the sky-high power bills being inflicted on Texans fortunate enough to still have power provided by ERCOT:
Texas resident Ty Williams told a local ABC affiliate that while he typically pays a combined $660 each month for his home, guest house and office, he's been asked to shell out a shocking $17,000 this time around - and that's just for the first half of February.

"How in the world can anyone pay that? I mean you go from a couple hundred dollars a month... there's absolutely no way," Williams said, adding: "It makes no sense."
Pretty much you are being held hostage and there isn't anything you can do about it.

Both Williams and Piece use power provider Griddy, which has come in for scathing criticism amid the price jumps. But the company has argued that PUCT's order is to blame for the surge, insisting it "changed the rules" and kept costs "300x higher than the normal wholesale price," even after the power grid regained sufficient capacity to return to normal levels. The explanation did little to quell critics, however.

While Griddy has kept mum about whether it would waive any of the price increases or offer some form of relief to customers, earlier this week it urged patrons to simply find another provider, with CEO Michael Fallquist saying: "We want what's right by our consumers, so we are encouraging them to leave.

"We made the unprecedented decision to tell our customers - whom we worked really hard to get - that they are better off in the near term with another provider," he continued.

Griddy and a handful of other providers use a business model that exposes customers to fluctuations in wholesale energy costs in real time, charging a monthly fee of $9.99 on top of the direct cost of electricity. While that approach has often saved patrons money, it did the opposite this week, sending bills to unprecedented highs.

Another Texas provider owned by the city government of San Antonio, CPS Energy, suggested its customers could arrange a payment plan over "10 years or longer" to make the massive bills "more affordable."

The offer was not received well, triggering threats of boycott and allegations of price gouging.

"Are you out of your minds? Those of us that had power AND STILL CONSERVED IT are getting rates jacked up?"wrote one irate resident. "I'm not paying 4x the amount I normally would, increased demand or not. Customers should NOT be eating the cost whatsoever."

Ireland's lockdown to continue into AT LEAST May, hospitality industry to stay shut till middle of summer

restaurant table
A maximum of six people can be seated at a table under the new rules
The hospitality industry will likely not reopen until the middle of the summer, Taoiseach Micheál Martin has said this morning.

Mr Martin said that he did not foresee pubs or restaurants opening before the middle of the summer due to the slow pace the economy will reopen at due to concern around new variants of Covid-19.

"We don't foresee that (reopening pubs etc) before the middle of the summer ...what the public health authorities are saying is that we stick with this until the end of April, then we reflect on the situation and make decisions about the months ahead."

"There won't be much of a change (after this phase) because the numbers are still too high ... what we intend is to reopen schools gradually ... it will be slow, we'll be cautious, because we have to monitor the effect on the virus.

Comment: It's notable that some countries are predicting herd immunity to have been achieved by summer, and others have rejected the vaccines over a lack of safety data and serious concerns over severe side effects.

QAnon hardliners are doubling down on theory Donald Trump will be reinstated on March 4

capitol protest patriots flags maga
Experts have warned the potential for further humiliation next month after another one of their predictions fails to come to pass will not damage the QAnon movement and they will continue to pose an extremist threat.

Followers of the radical movement, listed as a domestic terrorist threat by the FBI, have penciled in March 4 as the next significant date in their calendar, believing this will be the day Donald Trump is reinstated as president.

The latest theory, following on from the failed prediction that Trump would order the mass arrest and executions of satanic pedophiles during Joe Biden's inauguration on January 20, uses arcane reasoning heavily lifted from the beliefs of the sovereign citizen movement.
