Heavy monsoon rains, described as the worst in decades, left at least 9 people dead and 10 injured in the Pakistani city of Lahore (population 6.3 million) on Tuesday, July 3, 2018. The city received record-breaking rain that left much of it under water and without power. Heavy rains are expected to continue falling across the region over the next 3 days. Residents are urged to heed official warnings.

The city of Lahore, capital of Punjab Province, received a total of 252 mm (9.9 inches) of rain in 24 hours on Monday and Tuesday, breaking the previous daily rainfall record set in 1980.

Floodwaters left many many people were stranded in their homes and damaged over 200 electricity feeders across the city, leaving much of it without power.

The storm also disrupted air and land traffic, as major roads turned into pools.

Terrifying footage has emerged of the moment a fifty-metre section of a major road collapses.

The street can be seen buckling and crumbling on video captured by CCTV cameras in the city of Guang'an in Sichuan province, south-west China.

No injuries or deaths were reported as a result of the road collapse, which occurred just before 7am on Sunday.

Huge sinkhole opens up in Columbia, South Carolina

A huge sinkhole opened up after a water main break in northeast Columbia.

It happened at the intersection of Idlebrook Court and Boswick Ridge in the Summit neighborhood.

Officials with the Columbia Water Department say water service has been restored to the area, but a boil water advisory remains in effect.

Officials say it could take up to a week to repair the road.

A kayaker bypassed a part of an Arkansas scenic river known as Dead Man's Curve during a weekend trip, but a rare sinkhole created a whirlpool along his alternate channel and dragged him to his death.

Donald Wright, 64, from Searcy, Arkansas, died Saturday at Saddler Falls along the Spring River, said Keith Stephens, a spokesman for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. At least one other person was injured.

Sinkholes are common in the northern half of Arkansas, where subterranean limestone erodes away easily. Small whirlpools are common where bits of land extend into waterways, but having a sinkhole open a whirlpool in the middle of a stream is uncommon.

"I've been here for 40 years. This is the first one I've ever heard forming in a river like this," said Bill Prior, a geologist supervisor at the Arkansas Geological Survey.

The owner of a Ford FX4 Off Road truck was lucky to escape a sinkhole that swallowed the vehicle Tuesday evening in Excelsior Springs.

The hole opened up in a parking lot in the 1700 block of W. Jesse James Road. The cause was not immediately clear, although there appeared to be another hole in a grassy area nearby.

Excelsior Springs Police posted photos of the truck in the hole on Facebook.

"An occupied vehicle was trapped in the hole, however the driver has been evacuated safely," police said.

A massive hole is causing concern for first-time homeowners in Grant Park. In a matter of weeks, they went from missing a few bricks in their walkway to having a 10-foot hole.

"We are very concerned about our safety," said homeowner Christina Ambrose.

She and her husband, Thomas, said it started two weeks ago with the onset of the nonstop rain.

"More and more of our pavers fell in and the hole gets larger and wider," Christina Ambrose said.

The Ambroses called their councilwoman and watershed came out to inspect.

"They said, 'Yes, it is caused from the sewer they were able to do some testing,' and they said, 'We'll be taking care of it this is our responsibility," Christina Ambrose said.

Recent storms have caused damage throughout the Eastern Panhandle, including creating a sinkhole on the side of Tuscarora Pike in Berkeley County.

Crews say the sinkhole is reported about 15 feet deep and 10 feet wide. Currently, the sinkhole is confined to the side of the road, and crews on the scene were not sure if it will spread to the road ot not.

Crew members say they do not know how long it will take to fix, but they are expecting more heavy equipment to help get the job done.

With a toddler firmly strapped to her back, Rose Kimutai carefully shuffles around her compound as she removes items from her house in Kaptoror village on the steep slopes of Elgeyo escarpment. Dozens of residents can also be seen hauling their property into a waiting truck to be carted away.

The mass exodus has been motivated by the development of huge fissures around their houses.

"It all began on Thursday last week following an overnight downpour. When I tried to open the door in the morning, I noticed that it wouldn't open properly. And then I saw a crack on the ground. When I managed to come out, there was an even bigger crack," Kimutai told The Standard team when we visited the area earlier this week.

She was forced to move into a chicken coop a safe distance away until neighbours came to her rescue. "The cracks are dangerous and one can fall into them. I have nowhere else to turn to because this has always been my home. The entire village is no longer safe for us," she said.

The fissures that stretch more than ten kilometers have cut through Kapsegut, Ketigoi and Kalwal villages and residents are living in fear that the area might sink.

Comment: In neighbouring Uganda huge fissures have also just been reported.

These events are just the latest in a recent spate of epic fissures and sinkholes, the earth 'opening up', from around the world: The current slowdown in Earth's rotation may be a contributing factor for such 'earth changes'. See also:

Ten homes have had to be evacuated after a sinkhole opened up in Tonbridge Road.

A number of people living on the A26 Tonbridge Road near the Fountain Lane traffic light junction have told they could be out of their homes for weeks.

Maidstone council confirmed 10 homes have had to be vacated and currently four people are being housed in temporary accommodation.

The move comes after a sinkhole as deep as three meters and caused by a 240 sq meter void - just under the size than a tennis court - appeared in the middle of the road on Monday, May 28.

Houses running along the stretch of road are showing signs of damage as walls separating the property are cracked at the same place all along the terrace.

A 17-foot sinkhole that formed in a Des Moines street over the weekend has closed down a portion of that road until it can be fixed, officials said Tuesday.

The sinkhole, at Southwest 12th Street and Thornton Avenue on Des Moines' south side, was reported to the city of Des Moines on Saturday. It measures about 17 feet deep, and roughly the same across, said Des Moines Water Works Chief Operating Officer Ted Corrigan.

The hole has since been covered with a metal plate, but the 3600 block of Southwest 12th Street will remain closed except for local traffic until officials can repair the street, Corrigan said.
