Many parts of central and eastern China have been embracing the heaviest snow this winter since Saturday, with severe traffic disruption during the New Year holiday.
In central China's Hunan Province, high-speed trains linking the capital city of Changsha to Guangzhou and Shenzhen suspended operation. All the passenger bus services in the city were suspended due to the snowstorm.
In the neighbouring Hubei Province, some 10,000 subway staff in the capital city of Wuhan began to clean up the snow since 4 a.m. on Sunday at 206 stations and laid sacks and carpets to ensure safety.

Using daily output from a weather forecasting model combined with a model that calculates melt of snow and ice, scientists from the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) calculated the "surface mass budget" (SMB) of the Greenland ice sheet.
When you look at the blue lines on the above graphs, it is quite evident that the Greenland Ice Sheet surface mass budget is far, far higher than the mean.
It was brief and unexpected but snow fell in Las Vegas.
The National Weather Service says snow wasn't in the forecast Thursday but it was reported in the valley around mid-day. None of it stuck in the lower elevations.
Meteorologist Ashley Wolf told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that a cold front and abnormally low-hanging clouds combined to produce the strange weather. She says the dryness underneath the clouds had a cooling effect, despite the temperature being above 50 degrees.

Resorts on all sides of Lake Tahoe reported snowfall ranging from 6 inches to 18 inches of new snow by Christmas morning after a system rolled through the region Christmas Eve and through the night.
"It was a good shot in the arm for winter in general," said Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe spokesperson Mike Pierce.
"Not that we were thin, but it put that nice fresh coat (of snow) on everything — making Tahoe shine and look spectacular."
The fresh snow allowed Mt. Rose to open new terrain on Christmas Day, including many previously-closed runs on the Slide Side.

Ski areas in the Alps are breathing a sigh of relief after one of the best late-autumns of the decade has enabled most of the region's leading areas to open all (or most) of their groomed ski runs for the busy Christmas - New Year period.
It was in fact a very white Christmas for many areas, particularly in Austria and Switzerland, with some reporting up to 90cm (three feet) of snowfall over the period from Christmas Eve to Boxing Day.

Spring is normally the season for buds to bloom but before Christmas thousands of extremely rare ice 'flowers' exploded onto the landscape of a Russian national park. Sadly, no sooner had they blossomed, and they were gone.
The thousands of crystalline blossoms bloomed on Valdai Lake in northwestern Russia on Tuesday and, thankfully, visitors had their cameras on hand to capture the rare sight in all its majesty.
The phenomenon was caused by a sudden temperature drop, the director of the Valdai National Park, Nikolai Sokolov, explained.

Ski areas in the Pacific Northwest region of Canada and the USDA have reported huge snowfalls over the past week, and there's much more in the forecast for the week ahead.
Mt Baker in Washington state in the Northwest corner of the USA, which holds the record for the most snowfall in the world in a single season, as well as the average biggest snowfall every season, has had 98 inches (over 8 feet or 248cm) of snowfall in the last seven days and is expected to get over a metre more by Thursday.
Fresh snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir cripples normal life, temperature dips to minus 15 degree Celsius
Temperatures in the border state of Jammu and Kashmir dipped significantly lower after the state received fresh snowfall on Monday, bringing the movement of traffic to a grinding halt in many areas of the state and severely affecting normal life.
According to news agency ANI, Rajouri town which is known as Vale of Lakes has received around 3 to 4 feet snowfall. The region, around 155 km from Srinagar, has been witnessing heavy snowfall for the last few days.
The famous Mughal Road in the district has been closed due to a heavy spell of snow. The road has been closed for the last seven days due to snowfall in Pir Panjal mountain range. As a result, the local administration on Wednesday deployed officials with heavy equipment to clear the road and restore movement of traffic.
