Deadly earthquake lifts Indonesian island by nearly a foot

Scientists say the powerful Indonesian earthquake that killed nearly 400 people lifted the island it struck by as much as 25 centimeters (10 inches).

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency said on Saturday that 387 people died, jumping from the 321 it reported the previous day, as search and rescue teams continued to sift through the rubble and people already buried by relatives are accounted for.

Using satellite images of Lombok from the days following the Aug. 5 quake, scientists from NASA and the California Institute of Technology's joint rapid imaging project made a ground deformation map and measured changes in the island's surface.

In the northwest of the island near the epicenter, the rupturing faultline lifted the earth by a quarter of a meter. In other places it dropped by 5-15 centimeters (2-6 inches).

A strong and very shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.4 hit northern Alaska at 14:58 UTC (06:58 local time) on August 12, 2018. The agency is reporting a depth of 9.9 km (6.1 miles). This earthquake can have a low humanitarian impact based on the magnitude and the affected population and their vulnerability. EMSC is reporting Mw6.1 at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles).

The epicenter was located 60.9 km (37.8 miles) SW of Elupak and 564.3 km (350.6 miles) NNE of College (population 12 964).

There are about 300 people living within 100 km (62 miles).

Katla, a giant volcano hidden beneath the ice cap of Mýrdalsjokull glacier in South Iceland, which towers over the town of Vik, has been relatively calm and quiet for several months, following growing signs of activity in the past couple of years.

Seismic activity in Katla is taken very seriously, as the volcano is under close supervision, as the volcano has erupted very regularly every 60-80 years.

The last eruption took place in 1918, making Katla long overdue for an eruption.

A shallow magnitude 5.8 earthquake was reported Greenland Sea, at a depth of 10 km, according to the United States Geological Survey. An earthquake of this magnitude is considered to be moderate.

It struck at Aug 07, 2018 at 01:57:09 UTZ. USGS reports that this quake event was manually reviewed. USGS alert level for this quake is 'green' which mean an estimate of zero fatalities and less than $1 million in losses.

Latest quake of magnitude 6.2 reportedly collapses buildings as search in rubble continues following Sunday's disaster

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 hit Indonesia's Lombok island on Thursday, less than a week after a 6.9-magnitude tremor that is believed to have killed more than 300 people.

Thursday's earthquake struck just after midday, sending panicked residents into the streets. According to information from Indonesia's meteorology agency the epicentre of the quake was 6km north-west of the island with a depth of 12 meters.

Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, the spokesman for the national disaster agency, said that there was "public panic" on Thursday as people ran from their homes as they felt the latest tremor. "The public are still traumatised by the quake before," he said. Initial footage posted by Sutopo on Twiter showed indications of further damage to buildings and power lines.

The death toll for Sunday's earthquake is still climbing and unclear. Officials and organisations including the military, the governor of the province that includes Lombok, the national search and rescue agency and the regent of North Lombok have issued different death tolls, ranging from 226 to 381.

The government-run news agency Antara put the death toll for Sunday's tremor at 347. The number of the dead may still climb higher, as rescuers work to free people trapped in the rubble.

The death toll rose to 39 after a magnitude 7.0 earthquake rocked the Indonesian island of Lombok and nearby Bali on Sunday, damaging buildings, sending terrified residents and tourists running into the streets and triggering a brief tsunami warning.

The head of disaster management in Indonesia's West Nusa Tenggara province, Muhammad Rum, announced the death toll - which could rise further as search and rescue operations continue.

Social media posts from the scene showed debris piled on streets and sidewalks. Hospital patients, many still in their beds, were rolled out onto streets as a safeguard against structural damage to the hospital buildings.

"Back in the house now. That was an attention getter," tweeted @Bali_chris. "Strongest quake we've felt in the 13 years we've been here. Much stronger than the last one in Lombok that we felt in Bali. Hope everyone in Lombok is safe."

A MASSIVE 7.0 magnitude earthquake has killed at least 91 people after rocking the Indonesian island of Bali, sparking fears of a tsunami.

The powerful quake is 7.0 on the Richter scale - prompting terrified holidaymakers at the tourist hotspot to scramble for safety.

Model Chrissy Teigen, who is on holiday on the island with husband John Legend, told her 10.6million Twitter fans how she walked outside naked clutching her newborn baby Miles as the tremor hit.

She tweeted: "Bali. Trembling. So long.

"MASSIVE earthquake."

"It felt like a ride. 15 solid seconds of "hooooooly s**t this is happening."

"I very calmly walked outside saying clutching baby saying 'I'm naked. I'm naked. I'm naked' like a naked zombie".

A powerful earthquake on the Indonesian tourist island of Lombok killed at least 14 people, injured more than 160 and damaged thousands of homes.

The shallow 6.4-magnitude quake jolted the island in the early morning, sending people running outside in panic and triggering landslides on popular mountain hiking routes.

Scores of aftershocks sparked fear among survivors. More than 120 were recorded, the biggest with a magnitude of 5.7, Indonesia's meteorology agency said.

Local officials have declared a three day state emergency, according to multiple television reports.

A 4.3-magnitude earthquake was recorded off the Southern Oregon Coast early Tuesday at 5:16 a.m. Within the following hours, nine more earthquakes were recorded in the same area.

The first tremor was detected about 200 miles west-southwest of Pistol River, Oregon, near the Oregon-California border. The next eight were recorded within a few miles of the first and the 10th was only 62 miles west-southwest of Brookings.

A magnitude 5.9 earthquake hit the western Iranian province of Kermanshah (Kermanshan) on Sunday, wounding at least 25 people, a few hours after two quakes struck the Hormozgen province in the south of the country, state media reported.

"Up to now, we have had reports of 25 injured and fortunately no fatalities," Houshang Bazvand, Governor of Kermanshah, told Iranian state media, adding that the injuries sustained were not severe enough to require hospitalization.

Local reports also noted that the two other quakes, with magnitudes of 4.7 and 5.7, had damaged buildings in a few villages without causing casualties.

The Kermanshan quake, which hit near the border with Iraq, was felt throughout different cities in the Kurdistan Region, including Halabja, Sulaimani, Erbil, Soran, and the Raparrin areas.

Comment: The Associated Press reports that the series of 3 quakes were all at a shallow depth of under 10kms (and therefore more likely to cause structural damage to buildings).

No tsunami warning issued, says National Weather Service

A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck to the south of the Alaska peninsula early on Thursday, but the National Weather Service said no tsunami warning has been issued.

The quake was centred about 100 kilometres south-southwest of Sand Point, Alaska, at a depth of 17 kilometres according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

"No tsunami warning, advisory, watch or threat," said officials from the National Weather Service, a unit of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
