The family of a security guard killed by three Rottweilers at a Shakaskraal stable yard recently was given R5 000 by the owners "to say sorry".
Khulekani Mthembu worked at La Maine stable yard, a few kilometres inland of Shakaskraal village, as a security guard along with his brother, Collin.
Two weeks ago, the dogs attacked and killed Khulekani - in spite of the fact that he had been feeding them for the past three months.
The yard is popular with local horse owners, stabling about 24 horses. One horse owner, who told the Courier of the attack, said he was angry that this terrible tragedy had been deliberately kept "under the radar". Speaking from their family home near Gingindhlovu, Collin Mthembu described his brother as a very friendly, helpful person.
"We were working together, saving money to build a nice house for our family at Wumbana area, between Eshowe and Gingindlovu. Now that he is dead, I have lost hope that I will achieve our dream," he said. He said his brother, who was 33 years old, has been working there for the past three months and part of his job was to feed the dogs.
A dead whale floating in the waters off the Burin Peninsula is a humpback, scientists at the Department of Fisheries and Oceans confirmed Wednesday.
Pictures of the carcass were posted to social media Tuesday and it's believed the creature is near the community of Lamaline, which had another bloated whale carcass wash ashore in 2014.
DFO said it does not know the cause of death.

"Situations like these are unfortunate ... we remind the public that physical contact with whale carcasses is discouraged due to the possibility of disease transmission or injury," DFO said in a statement.
The department added that Fisheries and Oceans Canada "does not have a role in the disposal of this whale."
South Africa is recovering from the deadly storm that hit parts of Gauteng and spread to KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape killing at least nine people.
The "supercell thunderstorm" started on Monday in Gauteng and wreaked more havoc in KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday where two patients of a hospital died after a wall collapsed on them. Others including a baby and a schoolgirl were found dead in the waters.
The storm was characterized by a rotating updraft amid strong winds and flash flooding like a tornado, the South African Weather Service explained.
Thousands of homes were flooded, trees fell and the ships were grounded at the Durban port which was closed on Tuesday after ships were drifting away, local media report.
A tropical depression hit central Vietnam on Tuesday
Floods and landslides after a tropical depression have killed at least 37 people, left another 40 missing and damaged homes and crops in northern and central Vietnam, officials said.
The disasters injured 21 people and destroyed or damaged more than 1,000 houses, submerged another 16,740 homes and damaged infrastructure and crops in six central and northern provinces, the Vietnam Disaster Management Authority said in a statement on Thursday.
In the hardest-hit northern province of Hoa Binh, 11 people died and 21 others were missing.
The casualties include four families whose houses were buried in a landslide early on Thursday while they were sleeping, killing six and leaving another 12 missing, disaster official Quach Viet Hoang said.
Rescuers were trying to search for the missing, Mr Hoang added.
Evacuations were ordered for 200,000 people in Ninh Binh province in the north.
A large sinkhole opened up in a Watertown mobile home community Monday afternoon during the heavy rain.
Around a half-dozen homes were damaged at Evergreen Park off LeRay Street.
Nearby Kelsey Creek overflowed, pushing water into the park, resulting in a sinkhole.
"This is the third time that this sink hole, the ground went in and this is the third time that this lady, she's had to go through this," said Beverly Dalton, who lives in the park.
It's estimated the hole is at least 50 feet long and has caused some of the homes to tilt and sink.
Dozens of dead Stingrays have washed up on St Heliers beach today in a mysterious turn of events that has puzzled locals
More than a dozen dead eagle rays have mysteriously been found washed up on an Auckland beach.
Beachgoers were shocked to find more than 15 large eagle rays scattered along St Heliers Beach on Saturday afternoon.
The eagle rays appeared uninjured apart from a few lesions caused by seagulls pecking on their flesh.
St Heliers resident Holger Boehm went down to the beach with his son on Saturday after hearing about the dead rays. He said the wingspan of the eagle rays was about 90cm.

Mount Shinmoe in the Kirishima mountain range bordering Kagoshima and Miyazaki prefectures erupted early Wednesday, marking its first such activity in about six years.
The Meteorological Agency raised the warning level for a volcanic eruption to Level 3, restricting entry to the mountain. It warned the volcano might grow more active, as swelling of the mountain was observed.
Volcanic tremors had been intensifying in the area since late September, prompting the agency to raise the warning level to Level 2 on Oct. 5 to restrict entry to areas near the mouth of the volcano. Level 5, the highest alert, urges people to evacuate.
The agency said Wednesday's eruption occurred at around 5:34 a.m., with the plume rising about 300 meters above the crater.
The government set up a liaison unit at the prime minister's office to gather information.
Lightning killed over 700 in seven years in Karnataka
Rain after the drought was a welcome relief for the state this year. However, it also led to tragedies. Lightning strikes have claimed as many as 75 lives to date this year. Maximum deaths in the state have been reported from Mysuru (12), Haveri (7), Dharwad and Kalaburagi (6).
On an average, more than 100 people are dying every year in the state due to lightning strikes since 7 years. As many as 711 people have died in past seven years. Recent deaths of six members in Periyapatna of Mysuru district and Koppal have triggered panic among the villagers. According to National Crime Records Bureau, every year around two thousand people die due to lightning in the country.
The experts say that more number of people die in the villages as they are mostly working in the fields. Also whenever there is rain, they take shelter under the trees. As trees are good conductors of electricity, people who take shelter under them are vulnerable. Even in cities, those taking shelters under trees are vulnerable to lightning strikes.
