Researchers at the University of Adelaide have published a landmark paper on the activities of bot accounts on Twitter related to the conflict in Ukraine. These Australian findings are truly staggering - of 5.2 million tweets on the social media network from February 23 to March 8, between 60 to 80% were shared by fake accounts. What's more, 90% of those posts were pro-Ukraine.

In particular, these accounts pushed the hashtags #IStandWithUkraine, #IStandWithZelenskyy, and #ISupportUkraine, and myths like the 'Ghost of Kiev', a fictional Ukrainian fighter pilot who is farcically alleged to have taken down 40 Russian jets within hours of the military operation commencing.

Significant spikes in activity were recorded at key points in the initial stages of the fighting, such as Russia's capture of Kherson on March 2, and the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant on March 4.

Exclusive: Job Creators Network Foundation poll: Majority of small business owners believe US currently in a recession

The Job Creators Network Foundation (JCNF) has released its August Small Business IQ Poll, which found a majority, 57 percent, of small business owners now believe the U.S. economy has entered a recession.

Surveying 500 small business owners, and using "The Small Business Intelligence Quotient (SBIQ), an index tracking overall small business sentiment about the economy," the pro-small business organization said in press release:
"Only 30 percent of respondents rate the condition of the U.S. economy as good or excellent. Meanwhile, a vast majority of small business owners are opposed to a major component of the recently passed 'Inflation Reduction Act'. Seventy percent of respondents oppose doubling the size of the IRS, which will trigger more audits of Mainstreet."
The JCNF highlights other key takeaways from its latest poll:
  • Small business owners are concerned about profitability. Last month, 71 percent predicted they would be profitable over the next year. That number dropped to 64 percent in August. It's the lowest number year-to-date.
  • In August there was a 10-point jump (36 percent to 46 percent) in the number of small businesses who say gas prices have affected their profitability.
  • A majority of small businesses are concerned about crime (65 percent). That jumps to 85 percent for minority-owned businesses.

Comment: Bank of America giving signals it expects a downturn next year:
Bank of America economists are no longer forecasting mild recession this year in the US, saying household spending and the labor market have both held up better than expected as the Federal Reserve raised interest rates.
"Our previous expectation for the US economy included a mild recession that began later this year. We based that view, in part, on incoming data which suggested household spending was weakening in the face of an inflation-induced shock to real income. Since that time, incoming data has suggested US households and labor markets have retained more momentum than we expected."
The bank now expects the economy will expand one percent in the third quarter, up from the previous estimate of a 0.5 contraction, and grow 0.5 percent in the fourth quarter. It previously had forecast a two percent contraction in the fourth quarter.

The prolonged economic momentum is a "double-edged sword," the bank said. The risk of recession is reduced but it brings more Fed tightening.

The analysts are still forecasting three quarters of contraction but they now see the negative growth starting in the first quarter of next year. GDP is expected to fall 0.5 percent first three months of the year and then by one percent in each of the two quarters that follow. The previous estimate was for a 0.5 percent contraction in the first quarter followed by growth of one percent in the second and 1.5 percent in the third. For the full year, the bank expects the economy will grow 1.6 percent, up from 1.2 percent in the previous estimate. Next year, the economy is now expected to shrink by 0.2 percent, matching the previous estimate. The estimate for growth in 2024 was dropped to 1.2 from 1.9 percent.

Following Powell's speech at Jackson Hole and his comments this week, Bank of America now projects a 75 basis point hike in September. The bank still expects the Fed will begin cutting rates by the end of 2023, an idea several Fed speakers have strenuously said was unlikely.

The bank now forecasts the unemployment rate to rise to five percent by the end of 2023. In the nearer term, however, it expects the rate of unemployment to fall back down to 3.6 percent by the end of this year.
"Recent employment reports do not suggest labor demand and employment growth have slowed much in response to the tightening in financial conditions that began earlier this year. With the Fed gradually pushing its policy rate higher into restrictive territory, we do look for demand for labor to moderate, but only slowly."
The bank notes that deteriorating global economic conditions could benefit the U.S. economy by lowering energy demand.
"When concerns about downside risks to global growth rise, they often lead to falling energy prices that are then transmitted into US gasoline prices fairly quickly. The intensification of downside risks to growth in China, Europe, and the UK led to an earlier decline in headline price pressures than we anticipated, opening the door to a healthier backdrop for US consumers."

Austrians take to the streets over living costs

Protest
© RuptlyVienna Protest
Thousands of people poured onto the streets of Vienna on Saturday, protesting against the soaring cost of living, with many denouncing the Austrian government and the "globalist agenda."

An estimated 3,000 people took part in the rally, as reported by the Heute newspaper, citing the city police force. Another gathering, dubbed the "patriots' march," also took place in downtown Vienna. There was a heavy security presence along the routes, and both events passed without incident.

The protesters accused the Austrian government of failing its own people and working in the interests of "globalists." Some activists denounced mandatory Covid-19 vaccinations, but the dominant theme on Saturday was skyrocketing energy prices, and the inflationary crisis.

Protesters called for the lifting of "suicide-sanctions" - an apparent reference to the punitive measures imposed on Russia in the wake of its military operation in Ukraine. Others denounced "NATO's warmongering," and a perceived push for militarization in Europe in general.

Greece coastguard fires on 'suspicious' Turkish cargo ship

Greek coastguard ships opened fire on a cargo vessel sailing in international waters in the Aegean Sea, escalating tensions with Turkey that have mounted in recent weeks.

There were no casualties in the shooting 11 nautical miles (20km) southwest of the Turkish island of Bozcaada on Saturday, a Turkish coastguard statement said.

After "harassment fire" from two Greek vessels, two Turkish coastguard ships went to the area and the Greek boats left, it added.

Comment: The conflict in Ukraine has already revealed how fractured NATO is, and if this spat develops into a hot conflict then the division in the 'alliance' would be even clearer. Moreover, recent diplomatic moves by Turkey hint that it is quietly giving up its former tactic of playing the West against the East, and is instead leaning more towards increased cooperation with the obviously ascending multipolar world, rather than to continue hedging its bet with the clearly collapsing West:

Biological male sent to women's prison after multiple convictions of child rape

Sally Dixon
A British serial predator was sentenced Thursday for sexually abusing multiple children while living as a man. Now that Sally Dixon identifies as a transgender woman, the offender will be jailed in a women's prison — despite not being biologically or legally recognized as a woman.

Dixon, 58, was found guilty on 30 offenses of indecent assault or indecency with a child against seven children in July, reported Daily Mail. The victims, of which the youngest was just seven years old, were abused between 1989 and 1996. Dixon began transitioning in 2004.

Comment: In the name of "inclusivity", biological males who decide to "identify" as female are basically given free reign to commit sexual abuse when they are imprisoned with women. Despite this, the insane policies which facilitate this abuse continue:

Police chief among 160 people arrested in Florida sex sting, also Disney employees (of course)

chief jason diprima
Polk County sheriff's office say they dismantled a major human trafficking organisation.

A police chief was among 160 people arrested in a sex trafficking sting operation in Florida on Friday.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said the arrested included a several teachers, a state corrections officer, two Disney employees and a former deputy chief of police from Georgia.

Comment: More on the bust from the Daily Wire:
A Florida sheriff said that his department "always" caught Disney employees during undercover operations, while revealing the results of a week-long investigation into human trafficking.

The large investigation, known as "Fall Haul 2," was spearheaded by the Polk County Police Department and involved a week-long sting operation in central Florida that netted over 150 arrests.

"Our goal is to identify victims, offer them help, and arrest those who are fueling the exploitation of human beings (Johns) and those profiting from the exploitation of human beings. Prostitution is not a victimless crime - it results in exploitation, disease, dysfunction, drug and alcohol addiction, violence, and broken families," Sheriff Grady Judd said in a statement.

People from Florida, Georgia, Michigan, New York, California, North Carolina, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Arizona were all arrested during the undercover operation. Notable arrests included a Disney bellhop, a Georgia police deputy chief, and a high school physical education teacher.

The Disney employee, 57-year-old Guillermo Perez, was arrested for soliciting a prostitute. Perez is a bellhop for Disney's Coronado Springs Resort. While showing Perez's photo while at the press conference, Judd suggested he was not surprised to have arrested a Disney employee.

"Now, where would we be with an undercover operation and no Disney employees?" he said. "Oh yes, we always have Disney employees."

Also arrested was an independent photographer who the sheriff's department said is occasionally "contracted by Disney."

FBI hiding potentially explosive records on Jeffrey Epstein, internet sleuth claims after FOIA denial

Jeffrey Epstein

A well-followed internet sleuth believes he has uncovered evidence that the FBI could be sitting on potentially explosive secret records involving dead sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein.

The anonymous Techno Fog, a self-described lawyer and writer who has nearly 400,000 followers on Twitter and also writes a popular Substack column, says a recent response to a Freedom of Information Act request indicates the beleaguered bureau may be hiding something. Techno Fog sought all records relating to any interviews the FBI had done with Epstein.

"The records responsive to your request are law enforcement records; there is a pending or prospective law enforcement proceeding relevant to these responsive records, and release of the information could reasonably be expected to interfere with enforcement proceedings," was the answer he said he received, which he posted online.

Comment: Nothing surprising here. The FBI undoubtedly has more information about Epstein, much of which damning either for them or those they're protecting. And they're not going to let that get out any time soon.

Electricity prices in Finland have reached record highs, according to the country's power grid company Fingrid.

"The price of adjustment electricity is currently exceptionally high at approximately €5,000 per megawatt-hour," Fingrid said in a statement on Thursday, noting that it has asked providers for more short-term power.

The operator also said it was forced to start up two backup power plants, Huutokoski and Forssa, early on Thursday in order "to balance the electricity system" and prevent blackouts. They were later shut down when "the situation was brought under control."

Disgraceful: Pentagon tells struggling Army soldiers, families to apply for food stamps

The Pentagon is recommending U.S. soldiers struggling with soaring food prices apply for welfare, in a move that underscores both low military pay and the economic headwinds facing the nation as a whole.

The recommendation came last month from Sergeant Major of the Army Michael Grinston, and directs Army soldiers and their families to apply for food stamps through the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program known by the acronym SNAP.

"With inflation affecting everything from gas prices to groceries to rent, some Soldiers and their families are finding it harder to get by on the budgets they've set and used before," the written guidance from Grinston reads.
"SNAP is a U.S. government program that provides benefits to eligible low-income individuals and families via an electronic benefits transfer card that can be used like a debit card to purchase eligible food in authorized retail food stores. Service members and their families may be eligible."

After Project Veritas sting, Dems look to oust their own Senate nominee

Matthews

South Carolina Democrats are calling on Senate nominee Krystle Matthews to suspend her campaign following the publication of a rant in which she claimed that white voters should be treated "like shit."

Project Veritas released a video Wednesday that showed Matthews explaining how she deals with white voters. Her state House district includes parts of Berkeley and Charleston counties, both of which are majority-white. Matthews is set to face off against incumbent Republican Sen. Tim Scott in the November general election. She said in the recording:
"I keep them right here, like under my thumbs. That's where I keep it, like, you have to, otherwise they get outta control like kids. So for me, I know other people are tip-toeing around them. And I'm like, 'Yo, that's some white shit. I ain't doing that.'"
Several high-ranking South Carolina Democrats have called on Matthews to step aside, even though ballots have already been printed with her name on them.
