UK banks not lending government backed emergency loans to small businesses, up to a million may go under

Nearly a fifth of all small and medium-sized businesses in the UK are unlikely to get the cash they need to survive the next four weeks, in spite of unprecedented government support.

That's according to research from a network of accountants which suggests between 800,000 and a million firms nationwide may soon have to close.

Many firms have told the BBC that banks have refused them emergency loans.

The banks say they are following the rules set out by the government.

Comment: Meanwhile the UK's state benefit scheme, Universal Credit, has seen an unprecedented rise in claims of nearly 1 million people, and counting:

And the situation with big business benefiting and the general public suffering appears to be the same in the US:

Federal agents in San Diego uncovered an underground smuggling tunnel last week and seized more than $29 million worth of drugs, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) said Tuesday.

The tunnel extended more than 2,000 feet between a warehouse in the Otay Mesa area of San Diego and a warehouse in Tijuana, Mexico, according to the DEA.

Agents seized about 1,300 pounds of cocaine, 86 pounds of methamphetamine, 17 pounds of heroin, 3,000 pounds of marijuana and more than two pounds of fentanyl from the tunnel, according to the DEA. Authorities estimated the total street value of the seized drugs is $29.6 million.

The discovery of the tunnel resulted from a combined investigation from members of the San Diego Tunnel Task Force, as well as Homeland Security, U.S. Border Patrol, the DEA and the United States Attorney's Office.

Paul Craig Roberts: A light in the darkness

Circle in the Darkness
Diana Johnstone's just published book, Circle in the Darkness: Memoir of a World Watcher, is the best book I have ever read, the most revealing, the most accurate, the most truthful, the most moral and humane, the most sincere and heartfelt, and the best written. Her book is far more than a memoir. It is a history that has not previously been written. If you want the truth of the last 60 years in place of the contrived reality constructed for us by controlled explanations, it is in this book.

This book is so extraordinary in its truthfulness and conciseness that it is difficult for a less gifted writer to do it justice. It is a book without a superfluous sentence.

Herein I will provide some of the books message. In future columns I hope to present some of the history in the book.

In the Western World the legitimate national interest of people has become identified with racism and fascism. Corporate globalism requires open borders, and the left has aligned with globalism and has become the most zealous enforcer of open borders, which has come to mean the right of refugees with victim status to other peoples' countries. The leftwing has abandoned the working class and anti-war activity. Today the leftwing is pro-war in order to enforce "human rights" on alleged dictators by bombing their peoples into oblivion, thus producing refugees and tag along opportunistic immigrants that flock to the Western aggressor nations.

Self-styled moral censors, such as Antifa, denounce hate while violently hating those they denounce. Everything is settled by controlled explanations that cannot be questioned or examined in debate. Those who engage in critical free thinking are censored, shouted down, beaten up, fired, and cancelled. The cancel culture permits no debate, only enthusiastic acquiesce to explanations that have been settled in advance.

Idaho passes law banning biological men from competing in women's sports

sport
Republican Idaho Gov. Brad Little signed into law Tuesday legislation that would prohibit biological males who identify as transgender women from participating in women's sports.

It was one of two transgender bills Little signed into law. Little also signed into law a bill that prohibits citizens from changing the gender on their birth certificate.

Left-wing activists reacted to the law's passage with indignation, and pledged to fight its implementation.

Best of the Web: Who's the snowflake now? Still no lockdown in Sweden, where its govt continues protecting population against infection of mass hysteria

Comment: Sweden's stance on this is very interesting. Their holding out may only prove to be temporary (especially as the overall global lockdown is likely to go on for months), but in the meantime, it is upending the core premise of the 'anti-woke' crowd who have spent the last decade ranting about the 'Swedish nanny state'...while their own 'much more free countries' voluntarily embrace the most extreme forms of martial law ever seen on Earth.

The Øresund Bridge - yes, that bridge - is an engineering marvel linking the Swedish city of Malmö and Copenhagen that normally transports 70,000 people daily. It has fallen eerily silent. Denmark is under coronavirus lockdown, and the Danes have imposed strict border controls. On the Swedish side, the Øresund remains open, although, understandably not many are making that journey.

It feels surreal in Sweden just now. Working from my local cafe, I terror-scroll through Twitter seeing clips of deserted cities, or army trucks transporting the dead in Italy, surrounded by the usual groups of chatty teenagers, mothers with babies and the occasional freelancer.

Outdoors, couples stroll arm in arm in the spring sunshine; Malmö's cafe terraces do a brisk trade. On the beach and surrounding parkland at Sibbarp there were picnics and barbecues this weekend; the adjoining skate park and playground were rammed. No one was wearing a mask.

Comment: The former!

What's really difficult to reconcile is the 'alt-image' of Sweden as a communist-feminist-marxist nanny state of the worst kind... with its - comparative to what's going on in the rest of the West - ultra-libertarian and healthy stance on this COVID-19 madness.

Flashback Scientists resume efforts to create deadly flu virus, with US government's blessing

bird flu

For more than a decade now, two scientists-one in the U.S. and one in the Netherlands-have been trying to create a deadly human pathogen from avian influenza. That's right: they are trying to turn "bird flu," which does not normally infect people, into a human flu.

Not surprisingly, many scientists are vehemently opposed to this. In mid-2014, a group of them formed the Cambridge Working Group and issued a statement warning of the dangers of this research. The statement was signed by hundreds of scientists at virtually every major U.S. and European university. (Full disclosure: I am one of the signatories.)

In response to these and other concerns, in October 2014 the U.S. government called for a "pause" in this dangerous research. NIH Director Francis Collins said that his agency would study the risks and benefits before proceeding further.

'Utterly unreliable': The mystery behind the true COVID-19 death rate

face masks
© ERIKA SANTELICES/afp/AFP via Getty ImagesPeople wear face masks as a preventive measure against the spread of the new coronavirus, COVID-19, while walking in a street of Santo Domingo on March 30, 2020.
The proportion of people who have died from the disease varies strikingly from country to country. But why?

The figure at the root of so much global angst about coronavirus is currently 4.7 per cent.

That is the proportion of people, as of Sunday afternoon, who have died after being diagnosed with the virus — 32,137 out of the 685,623 who have tested positive for Covid-19 around the world.

It compares with a death rate of around 0.1 per cent for seasonal flu and 0.2 per cent for pneumonia in high-income countries. However, 4.7 per cent is not only changeable but frustratingly unreliable, both for governments seeking to calibrate their policy response and for citizens trying to gauge how much they should worry.

Comment: That more and more of the MSM is questioning the numbers is a positive sign. While it will probably do little to cool the current hysteria it can at least help bolster those who have smelled a rat from the get-go.

Fauci: Mask-wearing recommendation under 'very serious consideration'

Dr. Anthony Fauci
Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, revealed on Tuesday that the White House coronavirus task force is seriously considering guidance that Americans wear masks to help thwart the rapid spread of COVID-19.

But the country's top infectious disease expert also acknowledged that such a directive has been complicated by the nationwide dearth of personal protective equipment.

"The idea of getting a much more broad, community-wide use of masks outside of the health care setting is under very active discussion at the task force. The CDC group is looking at that very carefully," Fauci told CNN.

DNACPR letter wales
The letter that was sent to patients of Llynfi Surgery
A GP surgery sent people with "significant life-limiting illnesses" a letter saying they would "like to complete a DNACPR (do not attempt CPR) form" for them.

Llynfi Surgery, in Llynfi Road, Maesteg, sent the letter to patients with serious health conditions such as incurable cancer, motor neurone disease, and untreatable heart and lung conditions, on March 27.

It said that people with these conditions are "unlikely to be offered hospital admission" if they become unwell with coronavirus and "certainly will not be offered a ventilator bed".

The letter was sent to WalesOnline by a patient who wished to remain anonymous. They said: "It not only greatly upset me but my family and close friends.

Comment: When it becomes clear that the coronavirus is less harmful than the seasonal flu there will be a significant backlash against the cruel measures citizens of all kinds have been subjected to.
