Floods and landslides in China kill at least 87, millions evacuated

Heavy rain in China has killed at least 87 people and forced 16 million from their homes, state media reported on Saturday.

Seventy-two people have been killed and 78 are missing in the northern province of Hebei after rain triggered floods and landslides, the Xinhua news agency reported, citing the civil affairs department.

Nearly 50,000 homes have collapsed and about 8.6 million people have been affected, it said.

In the central province of Henan, 15 people were killed and eight were missing after thunderstorms and strong winds forced 7.2 million people from their homes and damaged 18,000 houses,

Large parts of China have been inundated with rain this summer, killing more than 200 people.

More than 1.5 million hectares of crops have been damaged, leading to direct economic losses of more than 20 billion yuan ($3 billion), the government has said.


Comment: The death toll has now reached 120.

Over 120 dead after monsoon rains cause floods and landslides in 8 Indian states; 5 million affected

The National Disaster Management Division (NDMD) of the Ministry of Home Affairs in India reports that over 5 million people across 8 states are currently affected by flooding.

In a report dated 18 July, NDMD say that flooding in the country is affecting the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. NDMD say that 375 villages from 89 districts across the 8 states have reported flooding.

According to the report, 124 lives have been lost since the flooding began with the onset of this year's monsoon rainfall in June. Over 90 of the fatalities are believed to have occurred during the last 2 weeks. Around 200 people have also been reported as injured.

Flash floods have swept away two passenger vehicles in southeastern Khost province, killing at least 17 people, local officials said on Tuesday.

The floods caused the fatalities in Yaqubi district and Haroonkhel area on the outskirts of Khost City, the acting head of the Afghanistan natural disaster management authority said.

Shahdam Hilal told Pajhwok Afghan News the flooding had resulted from torrential rains in the province, where a flying coach carrying to Khost City was swept away in Haroonkhel area.

He said the dead included four women and as many children, coming from across the border to the Khost capital. Hilal added several people were killed and wounded in Yaqubi as well.

The sudden storm caused flooding in Novosibirsk's metro stations, city centre streets and shops - while the water opened cracks in asphalt large enough for vehicles to fall into. A waterfall was spotted close to the central railway station, a major stopover on the Trans-Siberian Railway.

'New tourist attraction,' quipped one online joker.

A rare tornado seen over Burmaistrovo village - the first in Novosibirsk region in more than 60 years, but the third in Siberia in two weeks - preceded the flash flooding in and around the city with a 1.51 population, the third largest in Russia. No injuries were reported from this rare phenomenon.

Around 5,000 people have been forced to evacuate their homes after heavy rain caused floods in Nicaragua and Guatemala.

The heavy rain began to fall on 09 July, 2016. La Aurora International Airport in Guatemala City recorded 360 mm of rain in 24 hours between 10 and 11 July. Flores in El Peten Department, Guatemala, recorded 170 mm during the same period.

Nicaragua

In Nicaragua, the Caribbean coast area was worst affected. Local media reports say that levels of the Prinzapolka, Escondido and Rio Grande de Matagalpa rose rapidly, threatening communities nearby. In the North Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region, around 4,000 people were evacuated and 300 homes damaged, mostly in the municipality of Prinzapolka.

A powerful thunderstorm hit Moscow shortly before midnight on Wednesday, with heavy rain instantly flooding streets and making waves on social media.

The heavy rain with hail and gale force wind was registered in the northwestern part of Moscow.

The thunderstorm halted traffic in many areas in the city due to the zero-visibility conditions it brought, RIA-Novosti reported.

Parts of Minnesota and Wisconsin were hit by severe flooding yesterday after a heavy rain of up to 10 inches (254 mm) fell overnight from 11 to 12 July. Two people are reported to have died in the floods.

In Wisconsin, Governor. Scott Walker has declared a State of Emergency in eight counties after severe flooding. In a statement, the Governor said:
"Beginning on July 11, 2016, widespread and continuing severe thunderstorms producing torrential rain , damaging winds, large hail and tornadoes have forced the evacuation of persons, downed trees and power lines, and caused flash flooding damaging roads and bridges in the counties of Ashland, Bayfield, Burnett, Douglas, Iron, Price, Sawyer and Washburn amounting to a natural disaster."

Damaging floods hit Estevan, Saskatchewan; over 5 inches of rain in 3 hours

The city of Estevan, Saskatchewan, Canada, declared a state of emergency on 11 July 2016 after a 3 hour torrential downpour caused damaging floods.

In a statement, Mayor Roy Ludwig, said that Estevan experienced over 5 inches (127 mm) of rain in a very short time frame on during the afternoon.

Areas of the city of around 11,000 inhabitants have been closed and the public warned to stay away. The flooding caused power outages at the local water treatment plant.

Worst floods in decade cause Chinese stadium to fill up like a bathtub

Southern and central China are drowning.

Since June 18, the regions have suffered their worst bout of flooding in a decade, furthered by a category 4 typhoon that hit the mainland after sweeping through Taiwan Friday morning, local time.

The storm has brought about 1 to 2 feet of rain in some regions, and gauges have measured winds as fast as 125 miles per hour, according to the Weather Channel.

Since flooding began, 186 people have been reported dead and 45 missing, according to figures reported by the BBC. About 1.4 million people have been evacuated from their homes.

The storm has reportedly weakened, but worries continue that more rain is headed for areas that are already under several inches of water.

Almost a thousand vehicles have been trapped on an expressway, after flooding destroyed 135 meters of road.

Traffic police got fast food and water to the trapped drivers and passengers.
