Over 500 people get treated for scorpion bites in southern Egypt - acting health minister

More than 500 people got bitten by scorpions in Egypt's southern province of Aswan, Acting Minister of Health Khaled Abdel Ghaffar said.

The Aswan region was hit by hail storms and heavy rain, which forced scorpions out of their burrows and into the streets and people's houses.

"503 residents in Aswan got antidotes for scorpion bites ... there were no deaths from the bites," Khaled Abdel Ghaffar said in a Saturday statement.

Meanwhile, local media reports said that three people have died from scorpion bites in the city of Aswan.

According to the acting health minister, there is enough anti-venom in all hospitals in Egypt, with 3,350 doses currently available in hospitals in Aswan Governorate alone.

Newborn killed in dog attack in Kenly, North Carolina

A newborn baby was killed in a dog attack in Kenly on Wednesday.

According to the Kenly chief of police, the attack happened around 5 a.m. It is being investigated as an accident.

The 8-day-old baby boy was reportedly attacked by a female pit bull at a home on North Church Street.

The pit bull was seized by animal control and officials said it will be euthanized.

"First and foremost, we offer our sincere condolences to the family and their friends during this difficult time," Chief Josh Gibson said.

A 10-year-old boy has died following reports of a dog attack near Caerphilly in Wales.

Gwent Police said they were called to an address in Pentwyn, Penyrheol, at around 3.55pm on Monday and confirmed the child had died at the scene.

The dog was destroyed by firearms officers and no other animals were involved in the attack, the force said.

Chief Superintendent Mark Hobrough said: "Officers will be making further enquiries at this time and will remain at the scene as the investigation progresses.

"It is possible that you may see ongoing police activity in Caerphilly as part of this work.

An elderly man reportedly died after being attacked by two pit bull terriers in Goedemoed in Durbanville at 13:00 on Friday.

WHAT LED TO THE FATAL ATTACK?

According to a report by the TygerBurger Durbanville police spokesperson Captain Marchell Rhode said the dogs escaped from their yard in Hadeda street.

While it is unclear how the dogs got out, police reportedly said the lock on the gate where the pit bull terriers were kept was broken.

The dogs then ran down the street before jumping against a gate further down the same street, forcing it open before attacking two smaller dogs inside that yard.

Search for missing man after shark attack off North Fremantle, Western Australia

Emergency services are searching for a man who is believed to have been attacked by a shark off Port Beach in North Fremantle, Western Australia, on Saturday morning.

WA police said that water police, police air wing, Surf Life Saving and the Surf Rescue helicopter responded to reports of a shark attack off Port Beach at 10.10am Saturday morning.

Water police were co-ordinating a marine search for the missing man, whose age had not yet been confirmed.

A spokesperson for St John's Ambulance WA said they had received a call at 10.03am of a shark bite and sent three crew to the scene.

Police are investigating what appears to be a deadly mauling by a dog in McKeesport.

Allegheny County Homicide is investigating a death believed to be the result of a dog attack, McKeesport Police Captain of Detectives Christopher Halaszynski said.

NewsChopper 2 flew over Grover Street Friday evening and saw multiple evidence markers on the ground. Investigators had taped off an area on the street.

Multiple neighbors told KDKA that they heard about four gunshots and believe the dog had been shot once they came out and saw this.

An unusual number of javelina attacks — four in as many weeks — in the Tucson suburb of Oro Valley has led officials to believe that someone in the area is illegally feeding the animals.

The first attack was Oct. 7 and the most recent was Monday, according to the Arizona Game and Fish Department. All of the attacks happened when a javelina suddenly charged people who were walking their dogs. Javelinas cannot tell the difference between a dog and a coyote, their natural prey, said Mark Hart, spokesman for the department.

"What's unusual about this is four attacks in rapid succession in the same community," Hart said.

One dog died from the attack and two more were injured, Hart said. The javelinas also bit two of the pet owners who attempted to intervene. While they don't typically bite humans, javelinas have large canine teeth that can deliver deep puncture wounds.

A 23-year-old woman "with a great future ahead of her" bled to death after being attacked by a pack of dogs while out for her evening run.

Florencia Ledesma managed to phone her police brother Enzo after being savaged by at least half a dozen animals on waste ground near her home.

He raced to the scene on his motorbike and managed to scare off the dogs by shooting at them with his gun when they jumped on him.

College student Florencia was virtually unconscious with bite wounds to her arms, legs and chest by the time an ambulance arrived and was pronounced dead soon after reaching hospital.

That's how a devastated farmer described how it felt to lose hundreds of ostriches to a hailstorm that struck the small district of Aberdeen in the Eastern Cape last week.

Grant Krige, the owner of Chelmsford Farm, said the hour-long hailstorm struck on Wednesday.
"I'm 54 years old and I have never experienced a storm quite as severe as that.

"We lost a whole lot of ostriches, about 450... the [hailstones] struck some of the birds' eyes and broke the necks of others. We also lost some of our goats and sheep, and the infrastructure was blown away by the storm," he said.

A 70-year-old woman was trampled to death by a wild elephant in lower Assam's Goalpara district on Friday, a forest department officer said.

The incident took place at around 7 am at Korkuchi in Dohela, divisional forest officer of Goalpara, Jitendra Kumar said.

This is the second instance of death in an elephant attack this month in Goalpara district, where 19 deaths were recorded due to such incidents so far this year, a forest department official said.
