Truckee-Tahoe ski resorts report another 2 feet of snow (in 24 hours) with much more on way - Nevada County declares emergency

The latest snowstorm to hit the Truckee-Tahoe region dropped about 2 feet of snow in the last 24 hours which led to an emergency declaration and the closure of highways and schools on Tuesday and much more snow may be on the way.

Tahoe ski resorts are reporting up to 2 feet of snow, some a little more, some a little less, and the National Weather Service in Reno has a winter weather advisory in place from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday for more accumulation, including 2 to 5 inches at lake level and 5 to 10 inches above 7,000 feet. The evening work commute may be impacted. Strong winds are expected to gust as high as 70 mph which the service said could lead to extensive tree damage.

According to the Tahoe Snow app, Heavenly Mountain Resort has received 26 inches of snow in the past 24 hours with Palisades Tahoe reporting 21 inches, Kirkwood Mountain Resort 19, Sierra-at-Tahoe 16 and Northstar California reported the most at 27 inches.

Skier killed in avalanche on mountain near Las Vegas, Nevada

A man skiing in the backcountry in the Mount Charleston area near Las Vegas died Monday in an avalanche, local law enforcement authorities announced Tuesday.

The skier, identified as Las Vegas resident Punan Zhou, was swept about 500 feet (152 meters) down Mummy Mountain before friends found him using a location-tracking device, said Sgt. Matt Marlow of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's search and rescue team.

Authorities on Monday initially described the man as an injured hiker.

Thanks to continued snowfall, Mammoth Mountain, CA, has reported 40 - 54 inches from this current storm with an expected snow accumulation of 22 -28 inches today.

Mammoth Mountain has surpassed last year's season snowfall total and, with 419″ of fresh snow at the summit, is now officially the snowiest ski area on Earth. 310 inches have dropped at the Main Lodge, including 13 feet since January 1. The resort also has the deepest base in the country.

Mammoth has been closed today due to the intense snowfall conditions and very dangerous travel in the area. Roads have been heavily impacted and are not plowed. The resort will focus on avalanche mitigation work today and protecting our equipment. They plan to reopen tomorrow, January 11.

The harshest phase of winter has descended with a snowy thud across all of Central Asia.

In Kazakhstan, highways are blocked. In Tajikistan, schools have been shuttered. Officials in Kyrgyzstan are pleading with apartment-dwellers to close windows to basements to avoid water pipes freezing. Trees and electricity pylons in Uzbekistan are crashing to the ground under the weight of snow.

Whole swathes of Turkmenistan, typically the warmest country in the region, are blanketed in white.

The movement on highways in Kazakhstan is so bad that Uzbek officials have even warned their own motorists against going there until the weather eases.

A 58-year-old man was killed and another man is missing after they were struck by an avalanche in the north-central Rocky Mountains on Saturday, authorities in Colorado said.

The pair were riding snowmobiles when a wave of snow hit them on the east face of Mount Epworth in Grand County, about 6 miles east of Winter Park, according to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center.

The avalanche was reported about 2:15 p.m., and responding sheriff's deputies, search-and-rescue crews, ski patrol members, and local good Samaritans found the 58-year-old from northern Colorado buried in snow, the Grand County Sheriff's Office said.

They couldn't revive him, and he was pronounced dead at the scene, the office said in a statement. The man's identity was expected to be released later by the county coroner, it said.

A snow storm that shutdown much of I-80 earlier this week left the south central city of Rawlins with an unusual amount of snow.

About two feet of snow fell in Rawlins between Sunday night and Wednesday morning, and the snow drifts were several feet deep. Even people with four-wheel drive were getting stuck in roadways.

Michael O'Brien, the utilities supervisor for the City of Rawlins, and his crew helped remove much of the snow. He said typically the area gets only a couple inches of snow in a storm.

"With this amount of snow though, it was very difficult," he said. "I mean, we had everybody from all different departments, different vehicles, every department had a vehicle out there, backhoe skid steer somewhat, trying to remove snow in places."

Palisades Ski Resort just had a record amount of snowfall over the weekend, and it got even more Wednesday.

In the past seven days, nearly 5 feet of snow has piled up in Tahoe.

It has been snowing heavily in some of the Norwegian ski resorts over the past few days.

Snowpack levels in California's mountains were at the highest level in 40 years Jan. 3 but time will tell whether the latest storms will help deliver enough water to the state to end a three-year drought streak, state water officials reported.

California's snowpack was measured at 174 percent of the historical average for the year Tuesday, boosted by recent storms that drenched the state during the holidays and brought snow to the mountains.

The state could see even more rain and snow this week and into the weekend, bringing much-needed water supplies.

"While we see a terrific snowpack—and that in and of itself may be an opportunity to breathe a sigh of relief—we are by no means out of the woods when it comes to drought," said Karla Nemeth, director of the California Department of Water Resources.

Resort officials are ringing in the new year with another deep powder day at Purgatory Resort in Durango, Colo. Monday, Purgatory received 23 inches of snow in 24 hours, bringing storm totals to 53 inches over the past 7 days.

Purgatory's mid-mountain base is now 52 inches with 102 open trails.

Purgatory is the only resort in North America that offers free unlimited skiing and riding to all kids ages 12 and under - no blackout days or purchase required. Guests can stop by the outside ticket window to pick up a free ticket for their little rippers. Please note proof of age is required.
