The Academy Awards were full to the brim with virtue signaling, including actress Natalie Portman's dress calling out nominated male directors, and Chris Rock and Steve Martin complaining about missing 'vaginas.'

Missing 'vaginas'

Despite the Academy Awards going forward with their night without a host, comedians Steve Martin and Chris Rock were still given an opportunity at the top of the evening to throw out some digs at the Oscars, including the lack of female artists nominated.

When talking about directors nominated at this year's ceremony - all males - the pair called out the show for its lack of recognition for females behind the camera.

Why I'm anti-woke

police with pride
© gettyThe woke police?
Woke authoritarians are a threat to freedom and equality.

During 2019's Last Night of the Proms, the audience was treated to a rendition of Daniel Kidane's latest composition, 'Woke'. Kidane had written the piece because he was concerned that the word had veered from its earlier definition - that is, to be 'alert to injustice in society, especially racism'. This was how the word was understood when it originated in the various black civil-rights movements of the 20th century. If this is all it means to be woke, then count me in.

Unfortunately, over the past few years the term has been appropriated and sloganised by the cult of social justice. 'Woke' is no longer simply a matter of standing up to racism, but is irrevocably connected to the authoritarian mindset of the identitarian left. Rather than confront bad ideas through discussion, debate, ridicule and protest, those who self-identify as 'woke' would sooner intimidate their detractors into silence through what has become known as 'cancel culture'. More insidiously, they have sought to empower the state and strengthen hate-speech laws, which curb individual freedom. They do all this in the belief that theirs is a righteous cause, but their illiberal actions ultimately bolster the very ideas they purport to despise.

Sinn Féin's historic Irish election and what it means for Ireland's future

mary-lou mcdonald sinn fein
There is just one fact that explains all about the Irish election. Among voters, 18-35, housing was the most important issue among a whopping 38 percent.

In real terms, it meant that young adults who can no longer afford a home or even to pay the rents demanded by landlords had had enough.

Tale after tale of people and couples still squatting in a parent's home or in tiny apartments were carried far and wide. Along with housing, the homeless also rated hugely with 10,000 a night sleeping rough. Only Sinn Fein seemed to focus on the issue. That focus paid off bigly as Donald Trump might say.

Wichita woman convicted of beheading ex-boyfriend's mother

Rachael Hilyard

A Wichita woman was convicted Thursday of first-degree murder in the decapitation death of her ex-boyfriend's mother, whose head she left in the kitchen sink.

Prosecutors said Rachael Hilyard cut off the head of 63-year-old Micki Davis using two steak knives on April 9, 2017. Davis had gone to Hilyard's home with her 9-year-old grandson to collect her son's belongings, at Hilyard's insistence. The child ran away before his grandmother was beheaded and called for help.

Hilyard's lawyer acknowledged his client killed Davis but said it was not premeditated, which is required for a first-degree murder conviction, The Wichita Eagle reported.

Hilyard, 38, attacked the older woman without provocation then grabbed a knife "to finish what she started," Sedgwick County District Attorney Marc Bennett said during closing arguments. He said Hilyard used a second knife after the first blade broke.

What is 'resignation syndrome'? Oscars doc legitimizes illness that affects only children of failed asylum seekers (yes, really)

Life Overtakes Me

Some are skeptical about a new psychiatric condition found almost exclusively among children of rejected refugees in Sweden. But Hollywood is lapping it up, even if its coverage will only create more victims, real and imagined.

I am not surprised that the film 'Life Overtakes Me' has won an Oscar nomination for a documentary short. This film resonates with Western filmmakers' - and activists' - fascination with psychological problems, particularly those suffered by children.

Resignation syndrome is an almost-entirely mysterious condition that had never been diagnosed until the 1990s, and is not officially recognized anywhere outside of Sweden. To what extent it is physical, psychological or social is still being hotly debated in the pages of both medical journals and Scandinavian newspaper columns.

Flashback US dependence on pharmaceutical products from China

Last month, the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission held a hearing on the United States' growing reliance on China's pharmaceutical products. The topic reminded me of a spirited discussion described in Bob Woodward's book, Fear: Trump in the White House. In the discussion, Gary Cohn, then chief economic advisor to President Trump, argued against a trade war with China by invoking a Department of Commerce study that found that 97 percent of all antibiotics in the United States came from China. "If you're the Chinese and you want to really just destroy us, just stop sending us antibiotics," he said.

Cohn's words highlight a security concern associated with pharmaceuticals from China. As Rosemary Gibson noted in her testimony, centralization of the global supply chain of medicines in a single country makes it vulnerable to interruption, "whether by mistake or design." If we are dependent on China for thousands of ingredients and raw materials to make our medicine, China could use this dependence as a weapon against us. While the Department of Defense only purchases a small quantity of finished pharmaceuticals from China, about 80 percent of the active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) used to make drugs in the United States are said to come from China and other countries like India. For example, the chemical starting material used to make doxycycline, the recommended treatment for anthrax exposure, comes from China. When an influential Chinese economist earlier this year suggested that Beijing curb its exports of raw materials for vitamins and antibiotics as a countermeasure in the trade war with the United States, the worries surrounding our API dependence to China seemed to be vindicated. Concern about a disruption in the supply chain could explain why the tariffs on Chinese products proposed by the United States Trade Representative in May 2019, worth approximately $300 billion, excludes "pharmaceuticals, certain pharmaceutical inputs, and select medical goods."

Comment: While this article is from back in August and was written in the context of sanctions and trade war, think about the American's complete dependence on China for their pharmaceuticals in the context of a country-wide shut down due to the coronavirus. If the Chinese are too sick to work, the US ain't gettin' their drugs. Considering 1 in 6 Americans, by some estimates, are on at least one pharmaceutical drug, how long is the US going to hold it together when all these people are forced to stop their drugs cold turkey?

Jewish settlers beat 3-year-old Palestinian girl and her family in Hebron

Jewish settlers, backed by Israeli soldiers
Jewish settlers, backed by Israeli soldiers, routinely attack Palestinians in Hebron.
Jewish settlers today beat a 3-year-old girl and her siblings while they were at their home in the neighborhood of Tel Rumeida in Hebron (Al-Khalil).

Local resident Ibrahim Ramadan said that the settlers violently attacked his children while they were playing, causing bruises to his 3-year-old daughter and terrorizing the rest of the children.

Comment: The abhorrent violence and brutality perpetrated by Israel's settlers and military against occupied Palestinians continues, unabated:

Oscars 2020: Joaquin Phoenix wins Best Actor as 'The Woker', Brad Pitt Best Supporting Actor with edgy quip about Bolton & impeachment

Comment: Warning: this article will make you cringe, hard!

joaquin phoenix
© Reuters / Mario AnzuoniJoaquin Phoenix plays a lot of disturbing characters in his movies. No wonder...
'Joker' star Joaquin Phoenix used his time on the Oscars stage to preach to people about eating cereal, drinking milk and even cancel culture in one of the most wide-ranging, strangest acceptance speeches ever.

After winning the Best Actor Academy Award for his role in the hit film 'Joker,' Joaquin Phoenix took the stage and ranted about everything from drinking milk to "plundering" the world's resources.

The actor, who is an outspoken vegan, shamed people for using milk in their cereal and coffee at one point. After talking up people's "commonality" and "giving voice to the voiceless," the actor said:
"We feel entitled to artificially inseminate a cow and when she gives birth, we steal her baby even though her cries of anguish are unmistakable and then we take her milk that's intended for her calf and we put it in out coffee and our cereal."

Comment: People wonder how some actors manage to pull off 'acting' roles as Phoenix did in 'The Joker', a movie about a criminally-minded Lefty looney who goes on a bloody rampage to incite chaos and revolution because 'society hurt me', and then consider, seriously, that Phoenix and the movie's creators may have consciously done such in order to 'caricaturize the Left and make a statement about current events'!

What if it's simpler than that; what if they're so well suited to their roles because they are just giving vivid expression to what's already inside them? Consider Kevin Spacey and the ease with which he plays devious, scheming characters...

Granted, there's difference between Phoenix's violently unhinged movie character and his real-life soft-spoken pleas to 'save the planet by not eating meat and asking for forgiveness from cows', but as he said himself during his rambling speech, no matter the lefty cause one espouses, they're all connected by one thing: "the fight for justice."

His movie character is mirroring his own real life descent into madness. And just as the character he played, Arthur Fleck/The Joker, sought to attract others to his 'cause' and join him in madness, so too is the actor in real life.

As for Brad Pitt, he's a complete airhead who appears to have merely read out a line his PR team suggested would go over well with woke Hollywood.

American convicted of killing UK teen Harry Dunn is CIA spy - reports

The family of road traffic victim Harry Dunn has called for a full public enquiry after a report that the US woman who fled the UK after hitting the teen with her car is a high-ranking CIA spy.

The Mail on Sunday reported that multiple sources, both in London and Washington, said that fugitive Anne Sacoolas had a CIA background. Her husband is also believed to be an intelligence officer and the new report suggests she even might be of a higher rank than he.

Harry's mother, Charlotte Charles, told the PA news agency that she and the whole family were "full of anger" after hearing the news reports. "How could they do this to us?" she wondered.

Finland's birthrate plummets to lowest level since 1868 famine

baby
Births in Finland plummeted for the ninth consecutive year in 2019, dropping to a mere 45,600 and reaching their lowest level since the country's nationwide famine in the 19th century.

Despite its painfully low birthrate, mass immigration from the third world was able to drive the country's overall population increase in 2019. Last year, the Finnish population grew by over 9,600 to around 5.5 million as 18,000 more migrants came to Finland than emigrates who left the country, Finland's national broadcaster Yle reports.

According to figures released by Statistics Finland, about 2,000 fewer children were born in 2019 than the previous year. Finland's national fertility rate in 2019 marked the lowest ever recorded at just 1.35 children per woman - down from 1.40 the previous year and 1.50 in 2017.

Comment: Like Hungary, Russia is also aware of the need to provide favorable conditions for families and, in turn, is providing "maternal capital" disbursements for families with two or more children. Having witnessed the deleterious effects of mass migration, to think that some are considering the 'need to increase immigration tenfold' seems like a suicidal trajectory for any country.

Despite this foreseeable future little action is being taken by many countries in the West, with infant mortality in the UK amongst the poorest is rising; life expectancy for the poorest females decreasing, and birth rates in the US and France have been shown to be falling year on year.
