Second-largest U.S. cinema chain weighs closing doors again as high-profile movies vacate calendar

The second-largest cinema chain in America is likely to close indefinitely all its U.S. locations, after reopening in August, according to a person familiar with the plans, escalating the pandemic-driven crisis faced by the entertainment industry.

Cineworld Group CNWGY 12.82% PLC's Regal Entertainment Group's potential decision to suspend operations at its more than 500 locations follows a cascade of postponements for big-budget Hollywood films, most recently the coming James Bond title "No Time to Die." The studio behind the film, MGM Holdings Inc., on Friday said it was delaying the film for the second time, to next April, from this November. It had originally been scheduled for release in April of this year.

Cineworld is the second-largest movie theater operator on a global basis as well as in the U.S.

The plan to close the locations isn't definite, the person familiar with the situation said, and a final decision isn't likely until Monday or Tuesday.

A group of activists attacked a Starbucks in Seattle, shattering the coffee shop's windows and then setting off fireworks inside the building. Police arrived at the scene and ordered the rioters to disperse.

Black-clad protesters threw rocks and other projectiles at the business, while others used implements to destroy the windowed storefront. Video footage shows rioters lighting firecrackers and tossing them into the building. Several loud explosions can be heard as members of the mob cheer. The Starbucks was also sprayed with anti-police graffiti.

Law enforcement moved in and declared the protest a riot, warning the crowd to leave the area or face arrest. Police mounted on bicycles pushed the protesters back while demonstrators formed a wall of shields as they retreated down the street.

Echoing a similar incident a month ago, Victoria police have been caught on camera forcibly arresting a pregnant woman for allegedly breaching the 5km radius rule being heavy-handedly enforced throughout the Australian state.

Footage of the dramatic arrest circulated online, showing a handful of armed police officers towering over a woman - described as pregnant by local media - at the Altona beach in the Melbourne area. An officer is seen trying to put a mask on the detainee as his colleagues handcuff her and repeatedly tell other beachgoers to stand back.

People filming the incident could be heard shouting, "What did she do? Why are you arresting her?" As tensions grew, onlookers swarmed the police squad, yelling insults at officers.

Danish Stram Kurs ("Hard Line") party has staged a Koran-burning protests in an area of the town of Fredericia mostly populated by Turkish and Muslim immigrants. The stunt attracted a group of angry locals, one man was detained.

The activists, led by the party's head Rasmus Paludan appeared in Fredericia on late Friday afternoon. While the protest was originally expected to take place at a local park, the group instead stood on a cordoned-off lawn by a local supermarket under watch of multiple police officers.

The Stram Kurs members tossed around and burned several copies of the Koran, insisting the stunt was needed to send a political message.

Comment: Not a particularly intelligent political message.

More than a dozen people have been killed and at least 30 injured in a car-bomb attack in eastern Afghanistan.

Officials in the Ghani Khel district of Nangarhar Province said the October 3 blast targeted an administrative building that also housed some military facilities.

Several armed gunmen reportedly attempted to enter the building after the explosion, but they were killed by security forces, provincial government spokesman Attaullah Khogyani told AFP.

There has been no claim of responsibility for the attack, although officials blamed the Taliban.

Lockdown: The new totalitarianism

obedient slaves
Every political ideology has three elements: a vision of hell with an enemy that needs to be crushed, a vision of a more perfect world, and a plan for transitioning from one to the other. The means of transition usually involve the takeover and deployment of society's most powerful tool: the state. For this reason, ideologies trend totalitarian. They depend fundamentally on overriding people's preferences and choices and replacing them with scripted and planned belief systems and behaviors.

An obvious case is communism. Capitalism is the enemy, while worker control and the end of private property is the heaven, and the means to achieve the goal is violent expropriation. Socialism is a softer version of the same: in the Fabian tradition, you get there through piecemeal economic planning.

The ideology of racism posits something different. The hell is ethnic integration and race mixing, the heaven is racial homogeneity, and the means of change is the marginalization or killing off of some races. Fascism imagines global trade, individualism, and immigration to be the enemy while a mighty nationalism is heaven: the means of change is a great leader. You can observe the same about certain brands of theocratic religious traditionalism.

Each of these ideologies comes with a primary intellectual focus, a kind of story designed to occupy the mind. Think about exploitation. Think about inequality. Think about race theory. Think about national identity. Think about salvation. Each comes with its own language to signal one's attachment to the ideology.

Tens of thousands protest Netanyahu across Israel; activists assaulted, arrested

Tens of thousands of Israelis protested against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the government he leads in communities throughout Israel Saturday, after the passage of highly contentious legislation this week that banned mass demonstrations as part of coronavirus lockdown restrictions.

Socially distanced rallies were held in hundreds of locations throughout the afternoon and evening, though at times orderly conduct gave way to more chaotic scenes of scuffles between protesters and police.

A police statement said 38 people were arrested in Tel Aviv alone for "violating public order and attacking police officers."

Demonstrators alleged that police used excessive force, and footage showed protesters being shoved or punched.

The conservative trans woman who went undercover with Antifa in Portland

antifa cake
Erin Smith was at a GOP election watch party at Twitter headquarters in San Francisco on November 8, 2016. For the one-time deputy vice chair of communications for the city Republication Party, it should have been a time of jubilation.

"As soon as they announced Trump the presumptive winner, we're told, 'Hey, there's a mob of protestors out front,'" says Smith, who stepped outside to find the San Francisco cops being pushed back by a crowd, some in head-to-toe black: clothes, helmets, face masks.

A trans woman, conservative, and former tugboat captain who says she's "a weird activist/analyst-type person right now," Smith soon became galvanized to find out more about a group that dressed as revolutionaries and took their fight to the streets. What was animating them? Trump animus? The romance of revolution? The boredom and frustration of COVID sequestration? An unfocused desire to fuck shit up?

It takes a special moral blindness to see setting fires, breaking windows, and threatening journalists as the road to justice. I've seen this moral blindness rise along with the violence in Portland. Young activists have told me frankly that they don't give a shit if someone working in the basement of the police station burns to death because, hey, she chose to work there. I've seen activists cheer the murder of a member of the conservative group Patriot Prayer. You cannot employ the violence of your perceived enemies and expect your revolution to end in peace.

The culture war is not a right-wing myth

black lives matter
Woke culture warriors now deny the very existence of the culture war.

The phrase that probably best characterises the events of 2020 is the 'New Normal'. Although it's typically used to describe our changed circumstances under lockdown, it could just as easily be applied to the way in which we have all grown accustomed to the worst excesses of the social-justice revolution.

News stories that only five years ago would have been dismissed as asinine aberrations now recur with a quotidian certainty. Recent notable examples include: Princeton University confessing to 'systemic racism', leading to an investigation by the Department of Education on the grounds that racism is a violation of civil-rights law; the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts making a similar admission, thereby emboldening some of its students to produce a 100-page document full of demands so entitled that it would make Veruca Salt blush; and an academic and novelist stating that debate is 'an imperialist capitalist white supremacist cis-heteropatriarchal technique that transforms a potential exchange of knowledge into a tool of exclusion and oppression'. Yes, the culture war is the 'New Normal'.

18,000 jobs lost each week of lockdown - Madrid files law suit against central government

madrid protest lockdown
The Spanish government has recommended reimposing a partial lockdown on all of Madrid city to curb the spread of coronavirus after local authorities imposed restrictions on just some areas of the wider region, the health minister said on Friday.
New restrictions that took effect Friday evening to limit coronavirus infections will destroy 18,000 jobs and 750 million euros ($880 million) in revenue each week, Madrid's regional government said in a lawsuit filed the same day.

The administration is seeking to overturn a series of curbs imposed by the national government including closing bars and cutting restaurant capacity to 50%. The limits, which stop residents from entering or leaving 10 cities in the region including the capital, allow trips to work, taking children to school and medical appointments. Foreign visitors may still fly into Madrid.

Comment: That tells us just how insidious and nonsensical these restrictions are.

The regional government adopted the new curbs while seeking a court injunction to suspend them, arguing that they were imposed without the required unanimous consensus of Spain's 17 regions that are primarily in charge of health services.
