'Woke wars' move to new battlefield: 'Top earner' complains white people do 'way better' on Substack platform

As Substack, the platform that allows journalists to build paid followings from newsletters, moves into the mainstream, woke critics are suggesting the site is biased towards white writers.

"I am a white person and I am a top earner on Substack and it's very weird to me that some people don't wanna admit that white people do way way way better on Substack," journalist Emily Atkin tweeted on Monday, adding that maybe people should "figure out how to make it not that way."

Atkin also said that "pure raw talent" is not behind the success of many who have moved onto the platform.

American Medical Association goes full Woke, declares racism a 'public health threat,' prompting both applause & mockery

The American Medical Association (AMA) has voted to recognize racism as a "public health threat" and pledged to "actively work on dismantling racist policies." Some cheered the decision, while others were dismayed by the move.

The new policy rules, adopted on Monday, are aimed at combating racist policies and practices across all US healthcare, according to a press release on the AMA website.

"The AMA recognizes that racism negatively impacts and exacerbates health inequities among historically marginalized communities," said Board Member Dr Willarda V. Edwards during a meeting of the AMA's House of Delegates, adding that, without systemic changes, "the overall health of the nation will suffer."

Twitter, Facebook, Eventbrite, and Google have all hit hard against conservatives use of their platforms. Now, bulk emailer Mailchimp has joined the ranks of tech companies that have decided to silence the voices of conservatives. Big tech appears to believe that it is their purview to give access to their platform to whomever they please — and to deplatform those they don't.

Mailchimp, which is a service organizations can use to send emails to everyone who has signed up to be on their contact list, decided that they don't want to provide their service to the Northern Virginia Tea Party. They claimed that the messages contained "potentially harmful misinformation."

Some common mouthwash brands can reduce viral loads in saliva, promising a new way to curb Covid-19 spread, UK scientists say. The hopeful message was met with a wave of mockery online from those apparently feeling lockdown-weary.

A preprinted Cardiff University paper published last week details researchers' findings on how well various products work to destroy viral lipid membranes. The idea is that an infected person could become at least temporarily less of a risk to others by rinsing and gargling to reduce the viral load in their saliva. Tiny droplets produced during coughing or even simply breathing is how scientists believe Covid-19 mainly proliferates.

Pushing down infection rates is crucial to stop the pandemic, and Cardiff University researchers believe that the use of mouthwash is an under-explored way of doing this. The research was done in a lab rather than on actual people. So it remains unclear if, say, Listerine Advanced, which proved to be effective in vitro, could undercut the virus, even if everybody uses it.

Three more upstate New York sheriffs have announced their refusal to enforce the state's private gathering limit on Thanksgiving.

In a scathing Facebook post on Saturday, Fulton County Sheriff Richard Giardino questioned the legality of Gov. Cuomo's newly instituted 10-person cap on parties and other gatherings in private residences.

"Frankly, I am not sure it could sustain a Constitutional challenge in Court for several reasons including your house is your castle," the sheriff wrote in the Saturday post. "And as a Sheriff with a law degree I couldn't in good faith attempt to defend it Court, so I won't," he said.

Giardino noted his office, with limited resources, has scant legal options to enter private homes other than search warrants, invitations or under an "emergency circumstance."

"We have limited resources and we have to set priorities, so obtaining a Search Warrant to enter your home to see how many Turkey or Tofu eaters are present is not a priority," Giardino wrote.

Washington County Sheriff Jeff Murphy said there will be no Thanksgiving enforcement, and on Monday Saratoga County Michael Zurlo also threw cold water on the state order.

At least two people have been arrested during a major motorized protest by Dutch farmers in The Hague against the government's policies to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions as part of its climate-change initiatives.

Hundreds of tractors, trucks and support vehicles from the Farmers Defence Force descended on the administrative capital on Tuesday, clogging the city's roads and bringing traffic to a near standstill.

Twitter said Tuesday it was rolling out tweets which disappear after 24 hours, joining rival social platforms in offering ephemeral messages.

The new "fleets" which had been tested in several countries in recent months are "for sharing momentary thoughts" and aim to bring in users who want to avoid having their comments become permanent fixtures, according to a Twitter blog post.

"Those new to Twitter found fleets to be an easier way to share what's on their mind," said product manager Sam Haveson and design director Joshua Harris in the blog post.

"Because they disappear from view after a day, fleets helped people feel more comfortable sharing personal and casual thoughts, opinions, and feelings."

The US military has purchased the location data of millions of Muslims from around the world who use a popular prayer app and a Muslim dating app, Vice's Motherboard reported.

The technology website reported on Monday that the US military used two separate methods to obtain the location data of users. The first involved a product called Locate X.

According to Motherboard, US Special Operations Command (USSOCOM), a branch of the military tasked with counterterrorism, counterinsurgency and special reconnaissance, bought access to Locate X to assist on overseas special forces operations.

The incident took place on Sunday, when the medic was visiting a block whose residents are all Christian, local media reports say.

An Israeli ambulance worker was fired after he was caught on camera spitting on portraits of Jesus while visiting a Christian home in Tel Aviv to carry out a coronavirus test.

Security camera footage showed the medic removing his mask and spitting on three pictures in a hallway in the house.

There aren't too many issues that trigger as much instant anger as the question of voter fraud in America. Of course, presidential candidate Donald Trump has made the issue even more controversial with his recent claims that the election may be "rigged" to go along with the more traditional argument that the voter registration rolls are seriously inaccurate and ripe for abuse.

The basic divide in the nation can be summed up this way: Most Republicans and conservatives believe voter fraud is a serious problem or at least a serious potential problem that needs to be combated with voter I.D. laws. Most Democrats and liberals refuse to believe voter fraud is a problem and think voter I.D. laws are really just racist voter suppression schemes. These two beliefs seem oceans apart, and it doesn't look like there's any chance of reconciling them anytime soon. But there's no need to be so pessimistic as long as we can agree to a broader definition of what vote fraud and chicanery really is, and follow a little common sense.
