Syrian air defenses down 10 missiles targeting Homs - Israel suspected of launching latest airstrikes (UPDATE)

Syrian air defense systems have been activated in response to a missile attack apparently targeting Shayrat Airbase in Homs province, state media SANA reports.

Up to 10 missiles were destroyed by the Syrian Armed Forces, a military source told Sputnik. The Syrian air defenses managed to intercept some of the projectiles, according to a SANA reporter. Meanwhile, the Al Mayadeen news outlet is claiming that all the projectiles were intercepted and inflicted no physical damage or casualties at the targeted Syrian base.

The Pentagon has denied initiating strikes or conducting any other military activity in Homs province. "There is no US military activity in that area at this time," the Pentagon's spokesperson told Reuters. The same information was also shared with TASS news agency by Pentagon spokesman Eric Pahon.

The raid in Homs countryside reportedly coincided with another missile attack against a military airbase near Damascus. According to various Arabic media channels, three missiles targeted Al Dumayr airport, but they were all allegedly downed by the Syrian air defenses.

According to yet unconfirmed reports, the missiles entered Syrian airspace from Lebanon, which may indicate that the Israeli Air Force could have been involved, Al-Masdar News reports, citing a military source. The outlet's reporter also published several videos allegedly showing the launch of interceptor missiles.

Comment: The Israelis were looking for more than a symbolic gesture. Apparently they are faring no better than FUKUS.


UPDATE April 17:

Later report claims it was a false alarm:
A commander of a military alliance that supports Syrian President Bashar al-Assad told Reuters that the country's air defense was set off overnight due to a false alarm.

According to the anonymous military man, the malfunction was caused by "a joint electronic attack" by Israel and the US that targeted the Syrian radar system.

Earlier in the day, the Syrian media reported that the country's armed forces repelled a missile attack on the Shayrat air base in the Homs province. A Syrian military source told Sputnik that nearly 10 missiles were intercepted.

Russia considers supplying S-300 anti-aircraft systems to Syria

Earlier, the Russian Defense Ministry had stated that Russian-made air defense systems deployed by the Syrian forces managed to intercept 71 of 103 missiles, fired by the United States, France and the UK on April 14.

"Several years ago we decided not to supply S-300 systems to Syria at our partners' request. Now, we will consider options to ensure the Syrian state's security after this outrageous act of aggression from the United States, France and Great Britain," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told the BBC.

Responding to the interviewer's question whether the foreign minister was implying that the recent developments in Syria had made Russia rethink its stance on supplies of the S-300 long range surface-to-air missile systems, Lavrov said that Moscow was ready to consider any means to help the Syrian army curb further aggression.

Comment: While the older systems were quite effective in the attack, the newer S-300 might have Trump eating a bigger cake:

The US must have been well aware that there were no chemical stockpiles at Syrian facilities the coalition destroyed in their 'retaliatory' strike, Russian chemical weapons experts told RT, noting the absence of toxic emissions.

Announcing the early Saturday morning missile strikes, the American-British-French coalition asserted that their forces were targeting compounds associated with Syria's alleged chemical weapons stockpiles. Now, after the dust settled, serious questions arise about the actual presence of any hazardous substances at these sites, including the bombed-out scientific facility in the Barzeh district in northern Damascus.

"This scientific research center has been inspected for several times by experts from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons [OPCW], moreover, a decision was taken to carry out such inspections twice a year," Anton Utkin, a Russian chemical weapons expert and former UN inspector in Iraq, told RT.

Bolivia's President Evo Morales has warned that the United States is the greatest threat to democracy, and that Latin America mustn't serve its agenda, following the attacks waged by the United States, France and the United Kingdom against Syria.

"The biggest threat against freedom, against democracy, against Mother Earth and against multilateralism is the United States. I am not afraid to say this openly," Morales said at the Summit of the Americas. "Washington spends hundreds of thousands of dollars on weapons of mass destruction."

Haley told CBS News that sanctions on Russian companies behind the equipment related to Assad's alleged chemical weapons attack would be announced today by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.

The civil war in Syria began in 2011 and escalated for five years during the Obama presidency, yet Barack Obama - despite demands from leaders of both parties and think tanks across the spectrum - never once bombed Syrian government targets. Although the CIA under Obama spent $1 billion per year to covertly train and fund Bashar al-Assad's enemies, it was never close to enough to topple him: just enough to keep the war going.

But Obama never bombed Assad or his military assets: a decision which, to this day, is scorned across official Washington. Hillary Clinton blasted Obama's refusal to do more to stop Assad, and in 2017, she actively encouraged Donald Trump to bomb Assad and take out his air force.

To this day, Obama regards his refusal to bomb Assad as one of his best moments; about this, Obama told The Atlantic in 2016: "I'm very proud of this moment." He made the decision because he "was tired of watching Washington unthinkingly drift toward war in Muslim countries" and because he was wary of military confrontation with a regime that is "sponsored by two large states": Russia and Iran.

Indeed, not only did Obama refuse to risk military confrontation with Russia in Syria, he sought in 2016 - after Russia annexed Ukraine - to form a military partnership with Vladimir Putin to bomb agreed-to targets in Syria.

Comment: Unlike Trump, the former president wasn't politically water-boarded with Russiagate innuendo - a set up by the Obama administration in step with the DNC and the Hillary Clinton pack. Russiagate effectively closed off Trump's options and redirected his presidency. If the tables were turned, would Obama have made different choices?

Even without a Russiagate looming, let's not forget Obama's role in the creation and support of proxy armies ISIS and Al-Qaeda and subsequent factions, civilian drone tragedies, the war and body count from Syria, the destruction of Libya, threatening Iran, military intervention in Iraq, surges in Afghanistan, partnership in the Yemeni war, authorizing multiple programs run by the CIA and the Pentagon to train anti-Assad rebels, sanctioning Russia, supporting the coup in Ukraine...
