Jeff Bezos: A case study in US plutocracy

Jeff Bezos income inequality
© David McNew/Getty Images
I often look at Jeff Bezos when trying to understand how American oligarchy functions for a few reasons.

Firstly, currently occupying the number one slot on Forbes' billionaires list, he is the top dog. He figured out how to play the plutocracy game quickly, and how to play it better than anyone else.

Second, our civilization is currently headed on a clear trajectory deeper and deeper into Orwellian tech dystopia if we don't turn things around or drive humanity into extinction first. The new money tech plutocrats own the foundation of that dark future, and we should all keep a very, very close eye on them on general principles as well as to get a read on where things are headed.

Lastly and most importantly, as a new money plutocrat Bezos has had to build his empire with high visibility in the information age. The old money plutocrats built their kingdoms in much darker times, with some families setting the foundations of their rule hundreds of years ago when there was very little in the way of newspaper coverage, and certainly no alternative media scrutinizing power. Bezos' wheelings and dealings are above ground to a much greater extent, because he's had to do everything in the public eye.

With that in mind, here are six things we can learn about how US plutocracy operates by looking at Jeff Bezos.

Identical CCTV time stamp at Gatwick airport puzzles online sleuths in Skripal drama

Online sleuths added to the drama of the Skripal saga (as if it was needed) when they noticed two alleged Russian GRU officers appeared to be sharing the same space at exactly the same time on CCTV footage released by UK police.

The images were from Gatwick Airport as suspects Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov (not their real names we're told) arrived from Moscow to assassinate Sergei Skripal, according to the British authorities.

When you first see the CCTV images, the men do seem to be standing in the exact same spot, at the exact same time, down to the second.

Comment: More 'evidence' of Russian involvement provided by the UK, again straining credibility. See also:

US urges Paraguay not to move its embassy from Jerusalem back to Tel Aviv

Israel Paraguay flags

Washington has urged Asuncion to think twice about the "historic relationship" between the US, Israel and Paraguay, and reconsider its decision to move the country's Israeli embassy back to Tel Aviv.

After Paraguay announced plans to move the embassy, Vice-President Mike Pence was quick to get President Mario Abdo Benitez on the line. "The vice president strongly encouraged President Abdo Benitez to follow through with Paraguay's previous commitment to move the embassy as a sign of the historic relationship the country has maintained with both Israel and the United States," the White House said in a statement on Thursday.

In May, Paraguay joined a tiny list of countries that opted to follow US' suit by moving their embassies in wake of Donald Trump's recognition of the holy city as the capital of the Jewish state.

Comment: Paraguayan President Benitez has responded to US and Israeli pressure by urging Israel to reconsider their 'exaggerated' closure of the embassy while announcing he will stick with his original decision. Haaretz reports:
"I regret Israel's decision. The reaction of closing the embassy was a little exaggerated and we urge authorities to reconsider it," Abdo Benitez said at a news conference in Itapua, 273 miles (440 kilometers) south of Asuncion.

He said Paraguay would "stick to international law and the United Nations' resolution that still considers it a territory in conflict" between Israel and the Palestinians.
Good on Benitez.

Mortar shells hit close to US Embassy in Baghdad

Baghdad Iraq

The explosions were said to be caused by mortar shells that hit an "abandoned lot" not far from the US and Egyptian embassies.

According to AFP, three mortar shells hit the fortified Green Zone in Baghdad, where the Iraqi authorities are located. The Iraqi military told Reuters that the shells had caused "no casualties or physical damage"

An unconfirmed video circulating on Iraqi social media shows the possible mortars exploding.

Comment: Anonymous sources have been quick to pin the blame on Iran. Business Insider reports:
Officials say the embassy has not been impacted and that US staff are taking appropriate safety precautions and prioritizing the safety of Americans on the ground.

Sources say the attack came from Baghdad Area Zayoona which is well known for control of Asae'b Ahlil Al Haq, an Iraqi Shi'a paramilitary group backed by Iran. The group was active during the Iraqi insurgency and in the Syrian Civil War. The mortars used in the attack are identified as 120mm which are considered heavy mortars and could cause extensive damage.

Sources believe the Iranian-backed group is responsible for the attack.

Iranian-backed forces have long been operating in Iraq and have obtained US arms. Iran continues to solidify its presence in Iraq, which it considers a key strategic location.

Kremlin slams British allegations, says Russia 'not involved in Skripal case in any way'

Skripal investigation

Russia has nothing to do with the Skripal poisoning case at any level, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said, slamming "unacceptable" British allegations.

"Neither Russia's top leadership nor those with lower ranks, and no country's officials, have had anything to do with the events in Salisbury," Peskov said. He rebuffed UK Prime Minister Theresa May's claim that the attack on the ex-double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter was approved at "senior level of the Russian state."

"Any accusations against Russian leadership are unacceptable," the spokesman added.

Comment: Check out Craig Murray's opinion of these latest allegations: The Skripal poisoning mystery deepens
The time that "Boshirov and Petrov" were allegedly in Salisbury carrying out the attack is all entirely within the period the Skripals were universally reported to have left their home with their mobile phones switched off.

A key hole in the British government's account of the Salisbury poisonings has been plugged - the lack of any actual suspects. And it has been plugged in a way that appears broadly convincing - these two men do appear to have traveled to Salisbury at the right time to have been involved.

But what has not been established is the men's identity and that they are agents of the Russian state, or just what they did in Salisbury. If they are Russian agents, they are remarkably amateur assassins. Meanwhile the new evidence throws the previously reported timelines into confusion - and demolishes the theories put out by "experts" as to why the Novichok dose was not fatal.

The leaders of Russia, Iran and Turkey are to hold talks in Tehran to discuss how to move forward in Syria. Damascus is gearing up for a major military operation while the US threatens it with intervention.

Iran's President Hassan Rouhani will host his Russian and Turkish counterparts Vladimir Putin and Recep Erdogan on Friday. The three parties are behind the so-called Astana process, which aims to deescalate the violence in Syria to a level, which would allow a political transition and a sustainable end of the seven-year-old war in the country. It is the third meeting of this kind and is expected to be dominated by Syria's Idlib governorate.

Congressman Meadows: Demands AG Sessions investigate Bruce Ohr's role with FBI

Meadows believes Ohr's wife and her relationship with Fusion GPS reveals a potential conflict of interest
Mark Meadows
Congressman Mark Meadows (R-NC) sent a letter Tuesday to Department of Justice Attorney General Jeff Sessions demanding that Inspector General Michael Horowitz and recently appointed DOJ attorney, John Huber interview now embattled DOJ official Bruce Ohr and investigate "critical violations" in connection with the FBI's handling the Russia investigation and the bureau's process to obtain a highly secret warrant to spy on a short term-volunteer for the Trump campaign.

Meadows, the chairman of the House Freedom Caucus and member of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee, released the letter Wednesday, which encourages both Huber, who was appointed last year by Session's to investigate possible corruption in the FBI, and Horowitz to investigate the new findings on Ohr. Ohr has been demoted twice by the DOJ after it was discovered that he failed to inform his superiors that his wife, Nellie Ohr, was hired by the private research firm, Fusion GPS, to investigate Trump's campaign. The research firm, which also hired former British spy Christopher Steele to compile a dossier on Trump, was paid for by the Democratic National Committee and the Hillary Clinton campaign. Newly released documents reveal that both Bruce and Nellie Ohr had a long-time relationship with Steele and that the FBI was using Bruce Ohr as a backchannel for Steele who was dismissed by the FBI as an informant for leaking information to the media.
The idea that Bruce Ohr had 60 plus contacts...with Steele is deeply troubling and deserves further examination
Ohr testified to Congress that neither he nor his wife has been interviewed by Special Counsel Robert Mueller's office, according to Meadows and several other congressional officials.

Secret Grand Jury proceedings underway against Andrew McCabe; Witnesses summoned

Andrew McCabe

Federal prosecutors have been using a grand jury over the last several months to investigate former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, reports the Washington Post, citing two people familiar with the matter.

What's more, the grand jury has summoned at least two witnesses, and the case is ongoing according to WaPo's sources.
The presence of the grand jury shows prosecutors are treating the matter seriously, locking in the accounts of witnesses who might later have to testify at a trial. But such panels are sometimes used only as investigative tools, and it remains unclear if McCabe will ultimately be charged. -Washington Post
McCabe was fired on March 16 after Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz issued a criminal referral following a months-long probe, which found that McCabe lied four times, including twice under oath, about authorizing a self-serving leak to the press. Horowitz found that McCabe "had made an unauthorized disclosure to the news media and lacked candor - including under oath - on multiple occasions."

US considering enhanced military presence in Greece amid tensions with Turkey

The US is exploring the possibility of boosting the numbers of drills and troops in Greece, which could lead to enhanced intelligence efforts in nearby hotspots like Libya, Syria and Turkey.

Greek officials are considering expanding US access to additional bases, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Joseph Dunford told reporters in Athens on Tuesday.

Those officials "made a general overture saying they would be willing to consider that, and I certainly was enthusiastic about the possibility," Dunford told the Pentagon's internal news service, Stars and Stripes reported Wednesday.

Theresa May's 'revenge' against Russia all the rage in trashy UK tabloids

GCHQ's outpost

Britain's super secret security services have been anonymously briefing the right-wing press over Theresa May's plans to launch a cyber war against Russia, in retaliation for the alleged involvement in the Salisbury poisonings.

The Times, the Daily Mail and The Sun all referenced government sources, in their pieces on what UK Prime Minister Theresa May is planning in retaliation against Russia.

In her statement to parliament, Wednesday, May alluded to counter-measures against Moscow over the alleged involvement of two Russian military officers - named as Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov - in the poisonings of Sergei and Yulia Skripal in Salisbury and Charlie Rowley and Dawn Sturgess in Amesbury.

Comment: May is trying to use the tactic that if the UK takes 'countermeasures', then they must actually be retaliating against something. Never-mind that their narrative against Russia is complete rubbish. That said, if May's hacking is as awesome as her dancing, Russia has nothing to worry about.
