Trump's largest donor's sole mission in life is to 'protect the state of Israel'

Sheldon Adelson
Sheldon Adelson
Miriam and Sheldon Adelson are Donald Trump's largest supporters. Together they gave more than $177 million to Trump's campaign in 2016 and Republican causes in 2016-2018. Dr. Adelson then was given the presidential medal of freedom last year, in recognition in part of her work on drug addiction.

The 73-year-old spelled out her worldview at the Israeli American Council conference last month, and stated that she and her husband alongside her share those views: Jews are unsafe in the west, Israel makes Jews everywhere safe and proud, so all the criticism of Israel is just masked anti-Semitism. Therefore, protecting Israel is their "mission in life," Dr. Adelson said; and American Democrats must join them in supporting Israel.

Here are excerpts of Dr. Adelson's remarks followed by comments from Sheldon Adelson, who made his fortune off casinos.

The United States has compiled yet another 'axis of evil' list

Bolton Pompeo Nikki Haley
Many American still long for the good old days when men were still manly and President George W. Bush was able to announce that there was a "new sheriff in town" pledged to wipe terrorism from the face of the earth. "You're either with us or against us," he growled and he backed up his warning of lethal retribution with an enemies list that he called the "axis of evil."

The axis of evil identified in those days in the 2002 State of the Union Address consisted of Iraq, Iran and North Korea. Iraq, which had not yet been invaded and conquered by the American war machine, was number one on the list, with Saddam allegedly brandishing weapons of mass destruction deliverable by the feared transatlantic gliders that could easily strike the United States. Bush explained that "Iraq continues to flaunt its hostility toward America and to support terror. The Iraqi regime has plotted to develop anthrax and nerve gas and nuclear weapons for over a decade. This is a regime that has already used poison gas to murder thousands of its own citizens, leaving the bodies of mothers huddled over their dead children. This is a regime that agreed to international inspections, then kicked out the inspectors. This is a regime that has something to hide from the civilized world."

Russian lawmakers propose bills that crack down on spread of 'fake news'

Fake News Russian flag
Russian lawmakers have given tentative approval to bills prohibiting the spread of fake news online and punishing those who insult authorities with jail terms of up to 15 days, in measures the opposition says are aimed at curbing dissent.

The two bills passed their first of three readings in the 450-seat State Duma with 332 and 336 votes respectively, Russian news agencies reported January 24.

One bill proposed introducing fines of up to 5,000 rubles ($76) or a 15-day jail sentence on those disrespecting government agencies, the state, the public, the Russian flag, or constitution.

Soros calls for crackdown on Chinese tech companies posing a 'mortal danger to open societies'

politicos argentinos,open society,soros
Artificial intelligence and machine learning pose a grave threat when they are controlled by authoritarian states, according to billionaire George Soros. He has called for a crackdown on Chinese tech companies.

Talking to journalists and executives attending the World Economic Forum in Davos, he said on Thursday the use of such technologies by the Chinese government is a "mortal danger."

The businessman said that the United States should apply more pressure to Chinese tech companies Huawei and ZTE, which have been labeled national security threats by some US officials.

Comment: MarketWatch reports more on Soros' comments:
"China isn't the only authoritarian regime in the world, but it's undoubtedly the wealthiest, strongest and most developed in machine learning and artificial intelligence. This makes Xi Jinping the most dangerous opponent of those who believe in the concept of open society" Soros said, in remarks prepared for delivery in Davos, Switzerland, on Thursday, where world leaders, business executives and celebrities have gathered for the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum.

Soros said his worries extend beyond China, centering on the fear that "the combination of repressive regimes with IT monopolies endows those regimes with a built-in advantage over open societies. The instruments of control are useful tools in the hands of authoritarian regimes, but they pose a mortal threat to open societies."

Soros focused on China's plans for a "social credit" system that tracks each citizen's social and financial behavior, producing a score that would be used to determine what services they are entitled to use, which he called "frightening and abhorrent."
China has since responded by saying that Soros' comments are a 'a gross distortion not even worthy of a rebuttal.':
"It's obvious who is opening doors and building roads and who is closing doors and building walls. Statements by certain people, which portray black as white and distort facts, are completely pointless and not worthy of even a rebuttal," said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying.

"We hope the relevant American can correct his attitude, not be shortsighted, and hold an objective, rational and correct opinion of China's development," Hua added.

SOTT Focus: 'Origins of Islam' Debate Obscures Modern Reasons For Sunni-Shia Conflict in Muslim World

sunni shia
Western intelligentsia say bloody division is inevitable because it's Islam, thus hardwired into Muslims. But the catalyst, they forget, is often Western intervention...
Lately, it has become a habit of Orientalist apologists of Western imperialism to offer reductive historical and theological explanations for the Sunni-Shi'a conflict in the Middle East region in order to cover up the blowback of ill-conceived Western military interventions and proxy wars that have ignited the flames of internecine conflict in the Islamic world.

Some self-anointed "Arabists" of the mainstream media posit that the division goes all the way back to the founding of Islam, 1400 years ago, and contend that the conflict emerged during the reign of the fourth caliph, Ali bin Abi Talib, in the seventh century A.D.

One wonders what would be the American-led war on terror's explanation of such "erudite" historians of Islam, that the cause of "the clash of civilizations" between Christians and Muslims can be found in the Crusades when Richard the Lionheart and Saladin were skirmishing in the Levant and exchanging courtesies at the same time.

The fact of the matter is that, in modern times, the Sunni-Shi'a conflict in the Middle East region is essentially a political conflict between the Gulf Arab autocrats and Iran for regional dominance which is being presented to lay Muslims with a veneer of religiosity.

Venezuela's US-backed coup leader immediately targets state oil company, requests IMF money

Guaido praying
The right-wing opposition leader that the United States is trying to undemocratically install as Venezuela's president immediately set his sights on the country's state-owned oil company, which he is hoping to restructure and move toward privatization. He is also seeking money from the notorious International Monetary Fund (IMF) to fund his unelected government.

On January 23, US President Donald Trump recognized the little-known, US-educated opposition politician Juan Guaidó as the supposed "interim president" of Venezuela. Within 48 hours, Guaidó quickly tried to seize control of Venezuela's major US-based oil refiner and use its revenue to help bankroll his US-backed coup regime.

Guaidó is attempting to fire the directors of Citgo Petroleum, which is owned by Venezuela's state oil company PDVSA, and seeks to appoint his own new board.

Reuters described Citgo as "Venezuela's most important foreign asset"; Bloomberg calls it "the crown jewel of PDVSA's assets."

Citgo is the largest purchaser of Venezuelan oil, although crippling sanctions imposed by the Trump administration have prevented the company from sending revenue to Venezuela, starving the government of funding.

Editorial freedom? UK's 'Independent' partners with Saudi Arabia to expand international media influence

Independent Arabia
Independent Arabia
A Saudi media company has launched an Arabic-language version of the UK Independent headed by an ally of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Persian, Turkish and Urdu versions of the website will also be launched.

Independent Arabia will feature a mix of translated articles from the UK site and content written by the reporters from Saudi Arabia and other countries. The organization running it is the Saudi Research and Marketing Group (SRMG), which owns Arab News and Asharq al Awsat media brands.

Adhwan Alahmary has been appointed editor of the Independent Arabia. Seen as an ally of the royal family, he defended Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman following the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi embassy in Turkey in October.

"First of all, we are 'Independent' and we do not belong to any party," Alahmary told al Arabiya, whose parent company MBC Group is 60 percent owned by the Saudi government. "We promise the readers objectivity and the highest journalistic standards. We will leave it to the readers to judge our coverage, and time will proof that we are independent."

Comment: Independent journalism out of Saudi Arabia takes oxymoronic to the extreme, but at least thanks to this partnership we now know how readily the UK's Independent is to sell out: Also check out SOTT radio's: NewsReal: West Discovers Saudi Arabia Has Human Rights Issues & The Real Reason People Hate Trump

Russia to work on keeping INF Treaty even if US withdraws from it

Moscow will not abandon the INF Treaty and will make efforts to keep the landmark agreement in place even after Washington suspends its membership, Russia's Foreign Ministry deputy head, Sergey Ryabkov said.

"Absolutely not," Ryabkov told journalists when answering a question on whether Russia believes the INF Treaty may be given up on. Moscow considers the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF), which was initially signed by the US and the USSR to denuclearize the European continent, to be well worth preserving regardless of Washington's actions, he added.

Even after the US withdraws from the deal in February "we will continue our work," the deputy foreign minister said, adding that Russia will still work to "preserve this document" and nothing the US does will change its approach to the issue. He also expressed his hope that "common sense will prevail" eventually.

Comment: It has become evidently clear in recent years that the US is so bogged down in corruption that its military (as but one example) is lagging far behind Russia and China, and it has little choice but to resort to threats, playing dirty and fantastical ideas: Also check out SOTT radio's: Behind the Headlines: Putin The World To Rights: Russia's New Nuclear Weapons And The End of 'Unipolarity'

"Empty European rhetoric": Italian PM slams France & Germany's hypocrisy

Merkel Conte
© Reuters / Arnd WiegmannAngela Merkel and Giuseppe Conte
Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte called out France and Germany in a hard-hitting interview Friday, fired up over the countries' efforts to land Berlin a seat on the UN Security Council.

"Did Germany lose or win WWII?" Conte asked rhetorically, emphasizing, in his typical no holds barred style, that the seat had been intended for the EU as a whole.

The populist PM made the comments in an interview with local media after he was asked to comment on French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel's recently signed "friendship treaty." The so-called Treaty of Aachen includes a provision highlighting Paris and Berlin's stated priority of securing a permanent seat on the powerful UN body. The UN General Assembly gave Germany temporary UNSC membership in June, alongside four other countries.

Comment: Thankfully we can rely on Italy's populist politicians to say it like it is, although Merkel and Macron aren't merely looking out for the elites of their respective countries, they're also working towards subsuming national sovereignty for the insidious, supranational powers: And check out SOTT radio's:

Best of the Web: Trump betrays MAGA over Venezuela

Donald Trump and Juan Guaido
© Reuters: Carlos Garcia Rawlins/Aaron JosefczykThe US has announced its support for Juan Guaido, the Venezuelan Opposition Leader.
The U.S. backed a coup in Venezuela that has failed. And President Trump was the architect of it. This is a farce surrounding an intrigue contained within a tragedy.

What has happened in Venezuela is tragic. Nicolas Maduro is a comical figure straight out of central casting for a South American leader of a junta. But it has been the U.S.'s designs on Venezuela's oil and gas reserves (the largest proven in the world as of 2017) that is the real story behind this week's events.

For anyone still harboring doubts as to who Trump truly is Venezuela should end them. Trump's Energy Dominance policy is at the core of his foreign policy. And he will do whatever it takes to secure that policy and deliver a long-standing order to the U.S. and European oligarchy to gain control over Venezuela.
