Mercouris On Ukraine: "Something Big Is On the Way"

Captain Russia
"The Russians have decided there is no way to negotiate an end to this. No one will negotiate in good faith; therefore we must crush the enemy. And that's what's coming." Colonel Douglas MacGregor (9:35 minute)
"Strictly speaking, we haven't started anything yet." Vladimir Putin
The war in Ukraine is not going to end in a negotiated settlement. The Russians have already made it clear that they don't trust the United States, so they're not going to waste their time in a pointless gabfest. What the Russians are going to do is pursue the only option that is available to them: They are going to obliterate the Ukrainian Army, reduce a large part of the country to rubble, and force the political leadership to comply with their security demands. It's a bloody and wasteful course of action, but there's really no other option. Putin is not going to allow NATO to place its hostile army and missile sites on Russia's border. He's going to defend his country as best as he can by proactively eliminating emerging threats in Ukraine. This is why Putin has called up an additional 300,000 reservists to serve in Ukraine; because the Russians are committed to defeating the Ukrainian army and bringing the war to a swift end. Here's a brief recap from Colonel Douglas MacGregor:
Washington's proxy war with Russia is the result of a carefully constructed plan to embroil Russia in conflict with its Ukrainian neighbor. From the moment that President Putin indicated that his government would not tolerate a NATO military presence on Russia's doorstep in Ukraine, Washington sought to expedite Ukraine's development into a regional military power hostile to Russia. The Maidan coup allowed Washington's agents in Kiev to install a government that would cooperate with this project. PM Merkel's recent admission that she and her European colleagues sought to exploit the Minsk Accords to buy time for the military building in Ukraine confirms the tragic truth of this matter." Lithuania's Minister of Culture supports 'psychological quarantine' of Russian culture

Simonas Kairis
Minister of Culture of Lithuania, Simonas Kairis
The Minister of Culture of Lithuania, Simonas Kairis, on the air of the LRT TV channel, supported the idea of introducing a "mental quarantine for Russian culture."

Comment: In other reports it's translated as 'psychological'.

During the interview, the appeal of the Minister of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine Oleksandr Tkachenko to boycott Russian culture was discussed.

Kairis argues that "Russia deliberately uses culture as a weapon."

He explained this by the fact that the Russian side "sent" its executors to Lithuania "on important days for the Lithuanian state."

Comment: And what are the minister's thoughts on Ukraine's culture of Nazism? Tellingly, his proposal sounds awfully similar: 'All the real skinheads went to Ukraine': An American Neo-Nazi outlines the crimes of his Ukrainian 'colleagues'

Germany willing to steal billions of frozen Russian assets to 'help rebuild Ukraine' - reports

Lvov, Ukraine

Germany is open to using billions of euros in frozen Russian assets to help Ukraine rebuild as long as legal issues can be resolved and allies follow suit.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz's government supports Ukraine's demand for war reparations but hasn't yet taken an official position on seizing assets from the Russian state. The issue is complex and some parts of the ruling coalition are more ardent than others, according to people familiar with the discussions.

Comment: Russia's special operation is not over, so it's yet more wishful thinking that they'll be 'rebuilding' Ukraine anytime soon. Further, does anyone really believe the money will make it to the average Ukrainian?

Regardless, considering Merkel and Hollande's recent admissions that the West intentionally misled Russia during the Minsk peace negotiations, so that Kiev could use the time to prepare to wage war on their behalf, it's no surprise that they see no issue with such egregious theft. However, as with everything else the West has thrown at Russia, it will likely backfire; one can imagine that the real international community, that is working towards a multipolar order, will not view such brazen criminality too favourably.

Blair aide wanted 'accuracy' rules for newspapers

Jeremy Heywood

A key official in the team of former prime minister Tony Blair wanted to regulate newspapers for the "accuracy" of their reporting, according to newly-released official papers.

Files released by the National Archives show Mr Blair's principal private secretary Jeremy Heywood (a future cabinet secretary) became exasperated by what he regarded as the inaccurate reporting of the government's activities.

However his appeal for a system of "accuracy regulation" was swiftly shot down by Mr Blair's advisers, who said it would be "suicidal" to try.

Comment: This is the same Jeremy Heywood who approached The Guardian on behalf of ex-prime minister David Cameron and instructed them to destroy the material they had received from whistleblower Edward Snowden:
A spokesman said the deputy prime minister had thought it was "reasonable" for Sir Jeremy "to request that the Guardian destroyed data that would represent a serious threat to national security if it was to fall into the wrong hands".

He continued: "The deputy prime minister felt this was a preferable approach to taking legal action. He was keen to protect the Guardian's freedom to publish, while taking the necessary steps to safeguard security.

EU elite upset as Russia shrugs off sanctions: Effects are 'less than zero'

Despite the bloc's attempts to punish Russia, imports from the country have soared, Guy Verhofstadt says

The EU's sanctions on Russia over the Ukraine conflict have been a complete failure, Belgian MEP Guy Verhofstadt said on Monday. He added that the EU was only "rewarding" Russia by increasing imports from the country.

Writing on Twitter, Verhofstadt, who served as Belgian prime minister from 1999 to 2008 and has been an MEP since 2009, claimed that the effect of the EU's nine sanctions packages on Moscow "is less than 0."

The former PM said that the bloc's attempts to punish Russia have achieved the opposite result. "We are rewarding Russia for its war against us!"

New Twitter bombshell: How American spies used false claims of Russian election interference to bring the tech giant to heel

In a pair of blockbuster #TwitterFiles threads, this week, journalist Matt Taibbi has blown open, even wider, the media giant's concerning collusion with the US national security state. The former Rolling Stone writer exposed how political pressure from the US Democratic Party very effectively forced the company to endorse the lie that its platform was extensively weaponized by Russia, with hugely significant consequences.

Find the "Russian trace" at any cost

The first, boldly titled 'How Twitter Let the Intelligence Community In', documents how in August 2017, despite dubious allegations that Russian bots and trolls were responsible for the election of Donald Trump in the mainstream media reaching fever pitch, Twitter's hierarchy knew its platform wasn't riddled with malign Kremlin-directed actors.

In internal emails, the company's senior executives and communications professionals almost mocked the idea that it was overrun with Russian bots. They could neither detect "a big correlation" in account activity related to the November 2016 election, nor any "larger patterns" at all. They forecast potentially taking action against less than 25 users. As such, it was decided to simply ignore approaches from the media on the issue.

British-run spy tech powers Ukraine proxy war, putting civilians at risk

anomaly six moscow
Leaked files reveal the Anomaly 6 spy firm is providing intelligence to the British military through a cut-out involved in the Kerch Bridge bombing and other acts of dangerous sabotage in the Ukraine conflict.

On December 6th, The Grayzone revealed how British military and intelligence agencies were deploying technology created by shadowy private intelligence firm Anomaly 6 to illegally spy on citizens across the globe.

The company's technology effectively transforms every individual on Earth into a potential target for surveillance and/or asset recruitment by monitoring the movements of their smartphone. Anomaly 6 embeds tracking software in popular applications, then slices through layers of theoretically anonymous data to uncover a wealth of sensitive information about a device's owner.

Anomaly 6's services are provided to Britain's soldiers and spies through Prevail Partners, a private military company which The Grayzone has exposed as Whitehall's arm's-length cutout for prosecuting its proxy war in Ukraine. The firm has constructed a secret partisan terror army on Kiev's behalf, and helped plan the Kerch Bridge bombing by Ukraine's services.

Comment: We won't see this reveal in MSM. If this tech is being publicized, what else is out there?

Zelensky expands crackdown on Ukrainian media

President Volodymyr Zelensky has signed a new bill into law which strengthens government control over public access to news in Ukraine. Zelensky has already nationalized the country's media under martial law powers invoked after Russia's invasion last year, stoking criticism from press freedom groups.

Signed on December 29, the law expands the Ukrainian broadcast regulator's powers over news agencies "dramatically," now including both print and online sources, according to the Kyiv Independent. The measure requires publications to obtain licenses to operate, and any media org without the proper paperwork can be shut down, the outlet reported, adding that the body handing out the permits will be under Zelensky's control.

According to Ukraine's Institute of Mass Information, under the law, the media regulator is likely to be controlled by the incumbent authorities because its members are appointed by Zelensky and the Ukrainian parliament, where his party has an absolute majority.

In March, Zelensky issued a presidential decree which nationalized Ukraine's broadcast media, stressing the need for a "unified information policy" to combat Russian disinformation and voices critical of the government. Around the same time, he also banned a long list of opposition political parties with alleged links to Russia, and has since taken punitive action against Orthodox churches also said to have ties with Moscow, effectively quashing all dissent under martial law powers.

Trump's former acting Defense Secretary denies authorizing Milley China calls, says he should resign

ChrisMiller

Former acting Secretary of Defense Christopher Miller, who led the Pentagon from the period after the 2020 election through Inauguration Day, said that he "did not and would not ever authorize" Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley to have "secret" calls with his Chinese counterpart, describing the allegations as a "disgraceful and unprecedented act of insubordination," and calling on him to resign "immediately."

In a statement to Fox News, Miller said:
"The United States Armed Forces, from its inception, has operated under the inviolable principle of civilian control of the military. The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff is the highest-ranking military officer whose sole role is providing military-specific advice to the president, and by law is prohibited from exercising executive authority to command forces. The chain of command runs from the President to the Secretary of Defense, not through the Chairman."

Kristalina explained recession risks are elevated. "The three big economies, US, EU, China, are all slowing down simultaneously."
"The three big economies, US, EU, China, are all slowing down simultaneously. Some countries will avoid recession, though it would feel like a recession for hundreds of millions of people.

"Our big worry is that with the economy slowing down globally, we are projecting global growth to go down to 2.7%, maybe even lower next year."
In 2021, global growth was 6%. It slumped to 3.2% in 2022 and continues to decline as central banks worldwide unleash the most aggressive monetary policy tightening scheme in a generation to get inflation under control.
