Hail hits Phoenix, snow plagues Denver and the weather forecast ahead of holiday travel rush

Snow
Stormy weather is expected to start this weekend and last through Thanksgiving week.

On Thursday, a storm in the west dumped more than 1 foot of snow from northern Arizona to the Colorado Rockies. Even the Grand Canyon saw up to three inches.

Meanwhile, heavy hail struck Phoenix, Arizona, coating roads and neighborhoods, nearly looking like snow.

That same storm brought about 1 inch of snow and freezing rain to Denver Thursday night, causing dangerous driving conditions and a crash involving over 50 cars.

Canterbury farmers are scrambling to salvage what was spared from hail the size of eggs which pummelled Canterbury this week.

Some of them are fearing as much as an 80 percent crop loss after two severe storms battered the region.

Insurers said they've received hundreds of claims after the egg-sized hail and driving rain caused extensive damage.

"Its been pretty extensive its done a lot of damage to a broad range of crops, wheat and barley particularly.

"It's just been chopped right off by the hail storm," Brian Leadley, Vice-chairperson of Federated Farmers, said.

His crop of peas is just one month out from harvest. He said the storm bruised the plants badly.

Many of the crops are going to be exposed to disease which means farmers may have to invest more money into crops.

Huge waterspout filmed near Dubrovnik, Croatia

waterspout
The weather forecast for Dubrovnik for the next two days looks less than promising to say the least. Gale force southerly winds, torrential rain and overcast skies will make sure that locals and tourists will have an umbrella within sight at all times.

Just last week an amazing storm hit the whole Dubrovnik region and one of the extreme weather phenomena was a huge waterspout that appeared between Dubrovnik and Zupa over the Adriatic Sea.

This video of last week's waterspout was sent to us by a reader and shows the sheer height and power of nature. Could we see similar sights over the next two days? The weather conditions would suggest maybe.

Food prices set to rise in UK as floods ruin crops, planting delayed

The price of crisps and chips are expected to rise in the new year as the flooding in northern England hits the supply of winter vegetables such as potatoes, cauliflowers and cabbages.

Official data released on Friday revealed a "great deal of uncertainty" around the fate of a 10th of the country's potato crop as farmers count the cost of the deluge that has overwhelmed parts of South Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and the Midlands.

"There are increasing reports of crops being abandoned or farmers halting lifting but remaining hopeful that they might salvage something in the spring," said analysts at the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) in their weekly update. With some potatoes rotting in standing water, the report adds: "There remains a great deal of uncertainty over the fate of the crop area yet to be lifted. An estimated 2-3% of the area is expected to have to be completely written off."
